Top 10 electric vehicles of July 2022

In a world where sustainability is running on everyone’s mind, and the consumption of fossil fuels is quite literally looked down upon – Electric vehicles have been slowly and steadily taking over the world! Electric vehicles ditch the age-old fossil fuels and instead run on large traction battery packs which are in turn powered via charging equipment. They may not run on engines, but they still manage to be sleek, swift, and powerful. And, we’ve curated a collection of EV designs that we felt were the best of the lot! From an electric train with a transparent panoramic roof to a MUJI x Honda electric bike – these innovative and groundbreaking automotives promise to be the future of urban commute and automobiles!

1. The Muji Honda MS01 electric bike

Meet the Muji Honda MS01 electric bike inspired by the MUJI H-Type bicycle. The black and white theme on this one is a testament to the MUJI’s mellowed-down styling – in fact, the company’s artistic director Kenya Hara did most of the design bit of the bike himself. All the equipment and power of the MS01 come from the house of Honda. It is a very balanced collaboration, resulting in this minimalist two-wheeler ideal for city rides and beyond.

2. The Citroën La 2 Deuche Concept

Dubbed the Citroën La 2 Deuche Concept, this cheeky mini car has a sense of airiness to it. Retro DNA of the vehicle is visible in the section over the wheels, the headlights, and the accordion-like retracting rooftop which turns it into a convertible. According to Jean the styling is picked from the simple lines and silhouette of the inspiration – particularly the Charleston version. The rest of it has the more modern profiling – especially the side profile and rear. Those taillights and the wheels do give off the futuristic vibe, and as far as the exterior goes, it ends there.

3. WAYRA EV-03

WAYRA EV-03 is a bike high on personality, created keeping in mind the heritage of fat-bikes and cruiser-length bikes, while also having those minimal eye-catchy modern touches to create visual appeal. The presence of café racer aesthetics can also not be denied owing to the low-slung rider positioning. The element of drag racing is evident courtesy of the stretched rear, but the high ride height gives off that dirt bike racer vibe too.

4. AIRSCP

This electric train comes with a two-tiered seating system, offering the ability to carry more passengers per trip. The AIRSCP’s design, however, isn’t like your average train. It comes with a sprawling cockpit for the driver, complete with a wide windshield and a display on the top that lets people know where the train’s headed. People enter the train through doors on the sides and can either be seated on the lower tier or head to the upper tier for a more immersive experience.

5. The GYMO-FIT

This concept bike doubles as a two-wheeler at least and doesn’t sit in a lonely corner in your living room, in case you give up on your fitness regime. It’s a combination of an electric bike with aerobic and anaerobic fitness equipment. GYMO has three different modes when parked sturdily on the stand. It has the obvious exercise bike mode for strengthening the leg muscle group, rowing machine mode for working out the back and shoulder muscles, and the abdominal exerciser for strengthening the core.

6. DeLorean E

This concept rendering by transportation designer Onkar H takes a dig at what a DeLorean of the future will be like. Of course, it has to be electric to stand a chance of longevity in the closely contested automotive market that’s going through a metamorphosis for an electric vehicle-dominated near future. An electric DeLorean E powered by 4 high-performance motors and a mid-mounted battery pack is what the passionate fans will take with both hands. After all, it kills two birds with one stone – owning a classic piece of history that doesn’t sound alienated in the EV landscape.

7. The GRAVITY electric bicycle

Most electric bikes and hybrids use a motor to either drive the bicycle’s gears or at the very least assist the biker’s pedaling. Unlike motorcycles, these run on electricity and not fuel, so their carbon emissions are reduced although still present. In addition to the power bill, however, you are also paying for the cost of the weight of the batteries and motor, even when you’re just using your feet to drive the vehicle. In contrast, the GRAVITY electric bicycle design concept lets you have the best of both worlds, and riders can easily switch between two modes whenever they need or feel like it.

8. The Zeva Zero

The Zeva Zero definitely looks more like a flying saucer than a flying car, even if the goals and some of the technologies are similar to other attempts at making personal transport vehicles that traverse the skies to avoid earth-bound traffic. For one, it utilizes vertical take-off and landing, a.k.a. VTOL, more similar to a helicopter than an airplane. On the one hand, this has the benefit of saving parking space, so to speak, because the flying saucer launches and lands in an upright position, contrary to what you’d expect from a flying disc. This even has the advantage of allowing the Zeva Zero to “dock” vertical against walls of buildings with a system that the startup calls the SkyDock.

9. The EQUULEUS electric mountain patrol bike

Rethinking how a mountain patrol motorbike ought to be, the EQUULEUS electric mountain patrol bike beckons to the future of crime-fighting. This two-wheeler concept is built keeping in mind the riding safety and ample space to keep all the essential tools and equipment. In turn, the forest rangers can patrol inhospitable regions with utmost confidence and freedom to take all the essentials along. Even better, the storage modules loaded in the different sections of the bike are completely detachable, so, the rider can tag along tools in the most organized manner possible.

10. The Popup Scooter

Christened the Popup Scooter, the two-wheeled electric bicycle transforms into a chick kick scooter and the other way around. This gives the rider (and his/her family and buddies) the option to choose the configuration depending on the particular needs. The smooth transformation happens courtesy of the hydraulic cylinder which in normal bicycles is used to adjust the ride height. This hydraulic mechanism is capable enough to lift an adult person, so, lifting and lowering the ride’s body shouldn’t be a problem at all. At the core level, the concept is not just another blueprint that looks good on paper but falls flat on its face when it comes to creating the actual prototype or even a production model.

Aside from being a versatile little cookie, the wor.my rods’ most anticipated feature remains the camera mount, which lets you fit an action camera onto your rod, to capture dramatic catches on camera. The rod’s ability to work on land as well as underwater makes this feat even more dramatic, and the camera mount can be rotated around the handle as well as angle-adjusted, giving you the perfect PoV to record your fishing expeditions!

Portable and Compact – Take this small device with you wherever you travel in the world. Deploy it anytime, anywhere.

Light and Strong – They use high-quality engineering polymers that are carbon fiber reinforced. Carbon fiber provides a 3x increase in strength over unmodified polymer giving these composites strength-to-weight ratios that are on par with metals.

Easy to Use – For underwater fishing (snorkel fishing), you don’t have to learn to cast. Just swim on the water surface and look for the fish team or just float and hang the bait until the fish arrive.

All Seasonal – Perfect for ice fishing, so their system can be used in all seasons.

The wor.my fishing rods come made from a combination of materials – stainless steel for the rod (lending the metal’s springiness to it), cork for a comfortable handle that’s also water-resistant, and carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer for the reel seat, giving it strength and stability without the weight. The rod also uses an SR60 reel that’s made of high-quality engineering plastic with metal components in stainless steel and aluminum.

When completely assembled, the rod measures 60cm/24-inches in length and depending on the style of rod you chose (Dive, Spin, Cast), your wor.my fishing rod can weigh between 2.54 – 5.75 ounces (72g – 163g). Designed to be affordable, the rods start at $69 for the Dive Pack, $89 for the Spin Pack, and $99 for the Cast Pack, and support mounts for GoPro models from the Hero 3 to the Hero 10, and the DJI Osmo Action.

Wolf Rigs Hummer Camper is robust and capable entrant in the crowded adventure camper market

No matter how crowded the adventure camper market begins to appear, creative minds manage to rub the lamp of genius to germinate a fresh perspective. So, if you had begun to feel that every other camper was looking pretty much the same; spare a moment for the Hummer Camper from self-taught enthusiasts at Wolf Rigs. Hello – just a thought – we have a lot more to discuss!

Wolf Rigs dubs this guy as the “go-anywhere overland comfort castle,” after a good sight at the images, I’m sure you’d be left with little doubt. For whatever little skepticism, the camper is a converted Hummer H1 designed to stream roll over the petit RVs, thanks to its dominant look and the Humvee chassis.

Designer: Wolf Rigs

This military-grade camper is called the Patton and, as expected from the look of things, it features a shell and frame made completely from aluminum; essentially to keep the weight of the vehicle as light as possible. On the outside it may strike dominance with its beastly appearance, on the inside, this guy has been nurtured with utmost care and fineness. The spacious interior makes provision for a queen size bed just above the cockpit, a serviceable kitchen, lounge area, and a spacious bathroom with a shower and customized toilet that retracts into the wall to save space.

Passengers get a comfortable headroom and a lot of space for cooking and sitting, which ensures the comfort is never compromised, no matter where your Overlanding adventure takes you. The interiors are naturally lit with skylights and windows in the loft; cooking is catered to by a two-burner stove and a slide-out fridge.

Besides the living space, which we have just discussed in a gist above, the rear door of the Patton opens to reveal the storage section. This spacious section holds the gear and necessary supplies including a propane tank, jerry cans of water, shovel, telescoping ladder, spare tire, and lot more. We learn that Wolf Rigs allows customizing the Patton with installs you’d want but cannot assure what these necessarily are, at the time of writing. What we can assure is that despite being the most feature-rich campers for an off-road expedition, Patton means business and it shows outright in its appearance. So, if you have had an adventure lined up where not many recreational vehicles would go, give Patton a try!

This DJI drone only needs 3 propellers to perform aerial photography

One less propeller means one less motor sucking away at the battery.

Meet the DJI HiTop, a conceptual drone that follows a tricopter format instead of the traditional quadcopter one. In simple words, it uses three rotors to achieve flight as opposed to the traditional four. Designed as more of a consumer-grade aerial toy instead of a highly professional one, the HiTop is a simple drone that’s built to do its job well. The body of the drone is much larger than you’d expect, but this turns out to be a feature, housing a bigger battery and more safety features to keep the drone up in the air for longer. From the top view, the drone assumes the shape of a 6-sided star, with three rotors and three ‘bumpers’ between them, adding as physical barriers to prevent too much damage to the drone or the high-end camera system underneath. The only observable con in this format, however, is that the drone looks incredibly symmetrical on all three sides, which makes it a little difficult to identify which way the drone is facing while you’re in flight.

Designer: Spade Design

Now, there are a few performance differences between tricopter and quadcopter drones, all which really make sense when you come to think about exactly what the DJI HiTop concept hopes to achieve. The HiTop isn’t trying to break the FPV market or even dethrone DJI’s other high-end drones. It’s an aerial drone that’s made to stay in the air for a significant amount of time and capture footage from any vantage point. The tricopter format works rather wonderfully in this situation for the fact that the absence of one propeller means reduced thrust. Since the HiTop isn’t trying to be a high-speed racing drone, reduced thrust isn’t a problem. In fact, its manageable speed makes it perfect for amateurs and regular consumers.

The camera on the HiTop, however, isn’t some regular consumer-grade camera. It actually is the camera module found on the Phantom 4, the company’s flagship drone. This essentially democratizes great photography, making it more accessible to the masses. The 1-inch sensor on the HiTop is more than capable of recording high-quality 4K footage at high frame rates in HDR.

TOOB turns bicycle inner tubes into rubbery hand-made accessories

The interest, purchase, and use of bicycles have seen an uptick in the past few years, but these leg-powered two-wheeled vehicles have been around for decades. Many of their problems have also been around just as long, including the parts that easily get worn down and then thrown away. Although significantly more sustainable than cars or even motorcycles, bikes have parts that are definitely environment-unfriendly. Those range from bits of plastic here and there as well as toxic chemicals used in painting their metal frames. Rubber tires and inner tubes, however, are even bigger sources of pollutants down the road. Fortunately, this line of accessories puts inner tubes to a different use, allowing them to go the distance even after they have served their original purpose.

Designer: Roy Sherizly (TOOB)

Bicycle tires are meant to last a long time, but they do eventually meet their end, sometimes sooner than planned. They get worn down over the years, sure, but accidents might make them completely unusable at some earlier point in time. The same is especially true for inner tubes that can no longer be used entirely when they get damaged. These rubber-based products get thrown out and aren’t biodegradable, so they eventually break down into microplastics that pollute waters and even the soil. That green and sustainable lifestyle you’ve chosen suddenly becomes less so because of these wasted inner tubes.

Fortunately, inner tubes don’t have to be discarded just because a small part has become damaged. They’re no longer usable for bicycle wheels, but that doesn’t mean they need to meet the end of their material life as well. More economical and efficient than recycling, the upcycling mentality has taken root with many designers, and this line of TOOB accessories demonstrates how even something as simple and unattractive as an inner tube can become a useful and even stylish product.

“Useless” bicycle inner tubes are handpicked from Tel Aviv’s local shops and are then inspected and thoroughly cleaned. Depending on how much damage it has, the useful parts are cut off and then transformed into completely different products. The TOOB Keychains, for example, only need a small part of the inner tube. In addition to the material’s natural durability, TOOB adds a strong button that makes it easy to open and close the keychain to look around belts and bags. The TOOB Strap, in contrast, requires a longer stretch of inner tubing. The accessory takes advantage of the tube’s natural stretchy properties to hold things down onto bike rails or other surfaces.

Inner tubes make the perfect material for this kind of heavy-duty accessory, and their clean appearance and smooth surfaces make for a nondescript aesthetic. The keychain, for example, looks discrete, and its black color blends with almost any pair of jeans or bag. TOOB also supports the local bicycle economy by giving shop owners a better way to dispose of their waste.

Inner tubes don’t last forever, though, and TOOB does admit that the material will eventually wear out and dry. Then again, almost everything does eventually, including materials like leather. Ideas like TOOB don’t completely remove synthetic rubber products like tires and tubing from the picture, but it helps delay their inevitable fate in landfills, at least until we can figure out how better and more sustainable alternatives.

This inflatable beach chair takes on a more realistic form factor for comfortability

Modeled after the popular Adirondack Chair (your quintessential wooden porch chair), the BOTE AeroRondak is a unique inflatable number designed to be taken to the beach. Quite unlike any inflatable chair you’ll ever see, the AeroRondak Chair has a rather unique form factor that deviates from the bulbous nature of inflatable furniture. It also sports a proper backrest and even wide armrests that can hold drinks thanks to a magnetic fixture for attaching drink-holders. The chair is inherently waterproof, making it perfect for the beach, the poolside, or even outdoors in the rain, and deflates down once you’re done, folding down to the size of a duffle bag that you can then carry with you.

Designer: BOTE

Gone are the days of rusty hinges, moldy bean bags, and rotted netting.

Unlike most inflatable chairs that just end up considering rounded volumes to create the chair’s overall form, AeroRondak goes the more traditional-furniture route, with a design comprising flat panels sort of like planks of wood, but created through an inflated process. The chair isn’t made from regular plastic or rubber either – it uses a military-grade PVC skin that is virtually indestructible. The inner core of the chair has tens of thousands of composite fibers that connect the inflated halves, preventing them from turning bulbous and balloonish. This allows the inflated panels to stay flat and have a significant amount of rigidity.

The folks at BOTE explain the AeroRondak’s setup process in just 3 sentences – “First, unsnap the buckle, unroll, attach the pump hose to the inflation valve and fill ‘er up. The Aero Chair is to be filled until the pressure reaches 7-10 PSI. When you are ready to pack it up, do everything in reverse.”

The AeroRondak is perfect for practically any outdoor (or even indoor) situation. Sort of like collapsible furniture, the AeroRondak can be carried and set up when needed and stashed away when you’re done, making it perfect for lawns, beaches, poolsides, terraces, or even on the deck of your boat. This unique piece of furniture doesn’t come cheap though. The price of having the most eye-catchingly comfortable beach chair is currently north of 500 of your American dollars.

New Breath-Powered Hand Prosthetic Improves Accessibility

Rather than using conventional cables, the new Airbender prosthetic hand is powered by air. The invention, created by researchers at the University of Oxford, utilizes a purpose-built Tesla turbine that, when combined with the wearer’s breathing, accurately controls finger movements. Not only is the device lightweight and low-maintenance, it also requires such a small volume of air that even young children can operate it. Additionally, parts for the Airbender are less expensive than those used in traditional iterations, so it’s a more affordable prosthetic. With an estimated 40+ million people having limb differences worldwide—but lacking proper care—this invention is a crucial advancement that could significantly transform accessibility. Sea of Tranquility

Emily St John Mandel’s sixth novel Sea of Tranquility playfully and indulgently bends time travel, metaphysics and grief. The science fiction novel juggles an ambitious amount: a young man in 1912 exiled to the Canadian forest, an author trapped in a pandemic-ravaged Earth, moon colonies, paranormal investigations, the 25th century and even references to Mandel’s previous works. Both meta and mind-bending, Sea of Tranquility examines the end of the world to uncover what matters in the end.

Swiveling side table lets you interchange table tops and save space

When we first started working from home during the pandemic, a lot of people had to adjust their living spaces to be able to work properly. While things haven’t really returned to the old normal, there are those that are already working permanently from home or who will be working hybrid from now on. That leaves furniture designers with a lot of ideas to play around with to make this semi-permanent shift better for those who need additional stuff at home. Side tables are just some of the furniture that can be explored and improved.

Designer: Eugenie de Loynes

The Swivo table design is one thing that those working without a desk will want to have. It’s not just a piece of furniture that you can place things on while sitting on your couch, although it is definitely that. But it has three layers so you can use it for different purposes. You can even interchange the two tabletops depending on what you will be needing that day or time. The base can slide under your chair or couch to basically keep it nearer to you and saves a bit of space in your area.

While working, you can use the bigger tabletop which is 28 inches big so it can fit your laptop and even have some other devices or notebooks that you will need. Underneath, the smaller 21-inch tabletop can hold your coffee mug or book that you need to consult later on. After work, you can interchange the two so you store work stuff underneath and have your cocktail within easy reach. They can both swivel in any direction so it’s easy to move things around.

There is also a rack underneath the two table tops that you can use for your magazines or even small clothing items that you may need to be near you while working or relaxing. Despite having all these “features”, the Swivo is pretty minimalist in terms of its look and design. It is made from natural beech wood and white metal so you get a soft and natural feel and will fit right into whatever aesthetic you’re going for in your home.
