Foster + Partners Dome Home Dog Kennel comes in a geodesic shell structure

Foster Partners Dome Home Dog Kennel Concept Entry 2

You can’t blame some dog lovers for spending a lot of money on food and stuff for their pets. So if you have that mindset that it’s okay to spend for pets, you’d love this Dome-Home from Foster + Partners.

The Dome-Home is not exactly expensive, but it looks like something that you would spend a lot of money on. The design is cutting-edge, something that we don’t usually expect from a dog kennel. But then again, when there is the topic of design, any object can be given a new iteration.

Designer: Foster + Partners

Foster Partners Dome Home Dog Kennel

Foster + Partners has submitted an entry into the Barkitecture competition at a major pet event. The Dome-Home features a geometric form that creatives and design enthusiasts will love even if they don’t exactly love dogs. At the Goodwoof pet event held over the weekend, Norman Foster proudly showcased the plush kennel to dog owners. Foster described the product with a geodesic shell structure. He also noted, “it is like architecture in miniature,” and we can agree that it is a sight to behold.

Canine luxury seems to be a thing now, and there is no stopping pet owners from spoiling their babies. This time, Foster + Partners reimagines such pet luxury by introducing the handcrafted cherry wood dog kennel. Great design and craftsmanship always go together, and we love what we’ve seen from the designer and English furniture maker Benchmark.

The Dome-Home is made of engineered cherry wood and fine timber. A flexible padded fabric liner complements the bowl-shaped interior for your dog’s comfort. The liner is even removable for easy washing as described.

We can already imagine the Dome-Home in homes of minimalist pet lovers. The geodesic shell form isn’t exactly a simple design, but the wood material gives it a more natural and earthy feel. It’s modern contemporary that we believe can be timeless.

Over the weekend, the Goodwoof held at the Goodwood House was filled with numerous dogs of all breeds, sizes, and shapes. It’s a special event that celebrated man’s best friend. Several special activities for dogs and their humans were featured. In addition, lots of products were presented, including the Dome-Home.

We’re no stranger to kennel designs, as we’ve featured several here before. However, not all are exclusive for our paw-friends as kennels can both be for cats and dogs. That DIY Feline Digs was a cool cat crate, while that PaiPai Pets doubled as a cat tower and storage area. We once thought the Fetch House could be the best dog house for your best boy.

This 3D printed machine turns plastic bottles into 3D printing threads

Despite their dangers to the environment, the use of plastics is still on the rise. The material does have desirable properties that make it too easy to ignore their long-term harmful effects on our planet. Recycling plastic products, especially PET bottles, is always an option, but the costs and energy involved make many businesses and individuals just turn a blind eye to the growing problem. What if you could recycle these bottles on your own at home? What if you could use these PET bottles as the very material to create other things? That’s the almost perfect circular economy that this open source machine is trying to make a reality, and the machine itself is 3D printed using the very same material it recycles.

Designer: Reiten Cheng

3D printers have democratized the manufacturing and production industry, allowing almost anyone with enough resources to create the objects of their dreams. While it’s nearly possible to use a variety of filaments as printing materials, the most common are still thermoplastics like PLA and ABS. These only add to the growing number of plastic-based products out in the wild that will eventually end up in landfills. There is now another way to get plastic filaments without having factories churn out fresh new ones.

The Polyformer looks interesting from the get-go, and its name sounds like something taken out of fictional literature. Its translucent white appearance is thanks to the fact that it is made from recycled plastic PET bottles, giving it an appearance that also speaks to its purpose. In a nutshell, the machine slices up PET bottles and melts them to turn them into filaments only 1.75 mm in diameter. These recycled plastic threads can then be used in normal 3D printers to create more things, probably with the same distinctive translucent appearance as the Polyformer.

This is a rather ingenious and creative way to reuse plastic bottles, especially if you’re the type to use a lot of plastic material in 3D printing. If this kind of upcycling becomes more popular, it could help reduce the creation of virgin plastic for the purpose of 3D printing. At the same time, it offers an alternative to the traditional way PET bottles are recycled. Although those can be done en masse, the process often requires long-distance transportation and more water and energy. This way, you can do your own small part in making sure those bottles get a second lease on life.

The best part about this 3D printed upcycling machine is that its designer has made available all the information needed to recreate it yourself. In addition to 3D printed parts, the Polyformer also utilizes components used in normal 3D printers that could be bought off the shelf. The design is also modular, making it easy to swap out parts and customize the design to one’s needs and tastes. Hopefully, the idea catches on and, like in open source software, gets improved on by the maker community so that there could be more sustainable sources for the materials that, in turn, form other products from these creative minds.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra will put Leica on a divisive camera design

Phone designs have become increasingly common these days, so it’s not surprising to see some try to set themselves apart, one way or another. Some are met with much success, like the OPPO Find X5 Pro’s futuristic minimalism and the Realme GT2 Pro’s fashionable Paper Tech design. Others seem to still be trying to come to terms with their design language, while still others are apparently stumbling in their efforts to stand out from the crowd. Xiaomi’s next flagship will attempt to flaunt Leica’s massive brand to appeal to mobile shutterbugs, but it might be doing the camera maker a slight disservice considering how controversial the Xiaomi 12 Ultra’s camera design is so far turning out to be.

Designer: HoiINDI

Smartphone designs have mostly gravitated towards emphasizing the most important part of a smartphone next to its display. Trends come and go, but the importance of cameras in our smartphone-centric culture has never wavered. But as those camera sensors become more powerful and bigger, the space they occupy has also become larger, forcing designers to think of ways to balance looks and function. In the Xiaomi 12 Ultra’s case, it seems that only one side won, at least based on renders made from leaked information.

This isn’t the first phone that uses a circular enclosure to house the camera in a group, with the Huawei Mate 30 coming out with that design back in 2019. It might, however, be the biggest by a wide margin, occupying nearly a third of the phone’s height and leaving little room on its sides. If Xiaomi intended to call attention to the Xiaomi 12 Ultra’s cameras, this definitely does it, but not in a flattering way. Despite marketing materials, Leica’s iconic circle logo might not even be immediately visible, which is probably the best for the brand.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra is in the running for the most divisive camera design this year, going head-to-head with the Honor Magic4 Ultimate from March. Xiaomi’s camera bump doesn’t feel like it’s about to jump out at you, sitting on the phone’s back in a static manner. In contrast, Honor’s design has the entire phone’s rear elevated from four directions to meet the height of the larger circular camera bump, potentially creating some unevenness that would affect the phone’s stability on a flat surface or even in your hand.

Designer: Parvez Khan (Technizo Concept) for LetsGoDigital

That said, Honor arranged its camera lenses in such a way that they look a bit more symmetrical and balanced. Most likely due to technical considerations, Xiaomi’s lenses are all over the place, creating an almost disorganized appearance. It could even trigger certain psychological conditions in people because of the clearly visible and uneven holes. It’s definitely going to be a head-turner, but not everything that calls attention does so in a good way.

Admittedly, smartphone design is a delicate balancing act between opposing forces and directions. At the same time, it’s a problem created by manufacturers themselves. As they cram more and larger hardware inside phones, they will be forced to figure out a smart design for them. More doesn’t always mean better, especially from a design perspective, and the Xiaomi 12 Ultra proves it.

Gull-winged DeLorean Alpha5 EV is here – Time to zoom ahead into the future

It’s been more than three decades since the DeLorean first burst into the scene, and set the precedence for future-forwards cars. The popularity of the DMC-12 multiplied three folds once it appeared in the Back to the Future movie in 1985, and to date, this iconic four-wheeler captures automotive lovers’ imagination. The original DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was established in 1975 but somehow got bankrupt in 1982. The new avatar of the company was unearthed in 1995 and provided parts inventory, and has ever since, worked as a restoration company for the proud owners.

After much in the rumor mill and a teaser image released a few months ago, the 2+2 grand tourer is finally announced. The current DeLorean company has collaborated with Italdesign (the design firm that originally crafted the DMC-12) to create the electric Alpha5 with similar-looking gull-winged doors and louvered rear glass windows.

Designer: DeLorean

While the original one was a two-seater future machine, this modern EV version makes judicious use of the space with rear seats (thankfully no flux capacitor here). Taking a leap ahead in size from its predecessor, the much-anticipated EV measures 4,995 millimeters long, 2,044mm wide, and 1,370mm tall. Believe it as a mere coincidence or some inspiration, the official version released here bears some of the design cues from the DeLorean concept design by Ángel Guerra which was created way back in late 2020.

Alpha5 gets massive wheels, slim lights on the front and rear, and a contoured shape. The charging port is positioned on the driver’s side front fender for easy charging at stations. That nostalgic two-tone finish and the sweeping roofline as seen in the Back to the Future trilogy are heart-warming to see once again. As with other modern EV’s, this one gets a centrally positioned touchscreen, a wide digital instrument cluster, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Talking of the technical specifications, the Alpha5 – which will be the base performance model for now – gets a 100 kWh battery pack with an estimated range of 300 miles. The ride will go from 0-60 mph in flat 2.99 seconds and 0 to 88 mph – 2023 Tesla Roadster better be on its heels. This suggests, that better models are well on the cards in the future – a V8-powered sports coupe, electric sedan and hydrogen-powered SUV – all anticipated in the mix of things for the brand. The electric coupe has a very low drag coefficient of 0.23 which is close to that of the Mercedes EQS liftback.

According to the official announcement, only 88 of these desirable machines will be made when they enter production in 2024. For automotive fans, the DeLorean will debut at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18, 2022. There have not been any official price reveals but rumors estimate it to be $1,00,000 upwards. Given how exclusive this ride is going to be, it won’t be surprising at all.

This asthma inhaler concept makes it easier to take your life-saving puff

There is nothing more natural than breathing, so this inhaler uses that to make it easier to take a puff of medicine.

Compared to diabetics that have to routinely inject themselves with insulin, asthmatics have it easier with their inhalers. Despite that, a lot of people afflicted by this chronic lung disease are still unable to administer their medication properly themselves. Despite advancements in medical science and technology, the asthma inhaler’s design has remained the same for decades, and so has the inability of people to use them in the correct way. Fortunately, there are some designers who are able to think outside the box and utilize simple modern technologies to design an inhaler where you wouldn’t even have to think hard or silently count down to make sure you’re actually getting an effective dose of that medicine that could be a matter of life or death for the patient.

Designer: Roger Bartra Baron

Hollywood has probably made taking a puff from an inhaler look too easy. A hyperventilating character simply presses the canister and holds his or her breath, and that’s it. In reality, however, multiple things have to happen all at once, and certain steps have to be taken carefully; otherwise, a precious puff is wasted. Patients have to be sure to empty their lungs fully before they start, and they have to time their inhalation right when they press the canister. Then they have to hold their breath for the right amount of time, or else they have to repeat the steps all over again.

Although it sounds simple, imagine having to keep in mind and do all of those when you’re already stressed and deprived of oxygen. Unfortunately, almost all inhalers aren’t designed to make life easy for asthmatics, which makes this concept design a life-saving grace. And it utilizes that action that comes so naturally to humans, even those under an asthma attack.

Mae is an inhaler that integrates some electronics to make sure a user gets the exact right dosage they need. It also includes a display that guides them throughout the process so they won’t have to stress over forgetting a step. The most important part, however, is that it is driven by the natural breathing cycle of the person. They don’t have to make sure to time everything perfectly. They just need to inhale, and the electronics detect that and administer the dose as necessary. You’ll still have to hold your breath after, but now there’s a timer on display for your convenience.

The concept is also quite creative in making sure that it doesn’t make conventional cartridges or canisters obsolete. It can easily be replaced by any cartridge that fits inside the inhaler because it actually works the same way as traditional manual inhalers. The canister is still depressed, except it’s automated in Mae’s case. In fact, if the inhaler runs out of battery, you can still use it in the old-fashioned way. And, yes, Mae is battery powered, but it charges over USB-C, so you won’t have to worry about carrying spares.

Mae also has a bit of customizability in its design, at least as far as colors are concerned. This should make the idea easier to sell to pharmaceutical companies that distinguish their brands through colors. Sadly, Mae remains just a concept, but it is one that could definitely change people’s lives for the better if some company tries to make it happen.

The Drass D-One Commercial Diving Helmet

“Attractive” might be the wrong word, but I do find beauty in a highly complicated form-follows-function object like this. This is the D-One Commercial Diving Helmet produced by Italian manufacturer Drass Galeazzi:

The design features a 30-degree angle in the back of the helmet, providing an improved range of motion and allowing the wearer to comfortably tilt their head back to look upwards.

The helmet can be kitted out with a camera, a light, a welding shield, a defogger and a water shroud (to protect the valves in debris-laden water).

To don or doff it, your head goes through this neoprene “neck dam” in the bottom.

This video gives you a look at how all of the features work:

Nearness Face Mask Holder improves fit and comfort for all-day wearing

We’ve wanted to say the pandemic is over, but it isn’t, at least not yet. So don’t let your guard down because the dreaded virus still lurks, although the situation is not as scary as before. People all over the world still need to be careful. Even with the covid vaccination drive being deemed successful and herd immunity is about to be achieved, you must remain cautious, safe, smart, and alert.

Keep that face mask on at all times if possible. Even if some governments no longer require it, it is still wise to wear one. For at least another year maybe, we recommend you to wear a mask whenever you are going out or socializing with people.

But yes, we understand that facemasks can be annoying, especially after wearing them for a long time. A facemask is no longer just for those in the hospitals; it’s for everyone now. However, prolonged wearing of masks has some not-so-good effects, like marks on your face. Some people even develop rashes, pimples, or minor wounds, especially on the ears.

Nearness Face Mask Holder Design

To prevent those unpleasant effects, ear savers are recommended. We’ve only featured face masks or air purifiers here for the past couple of years, but there are no ear savers or mask holders in the lineup. We’re hoping you will like at least one design from the Top 10 Face Masks we’ve listed. The NEARNESS follows as a new type of face mask holder designed to keep your ears comfortable. While plenty of mask holders or ear saves are available, this one makes an impression with its excellent design.

Nearness Face Mask Holder Demo

Some people no longer bother if they look good or not because their faces are covered anyway. That is a fair point, but it’s still okay to care about being stylish or feeling good, especially since the pandemic has brought a lot of anxieties. The Nearness Facemask Holder is something that looks good while being functional. You can use it every day, especially if you are now required to report onsite for work or school.

NEARNESS looks like a simple clip, and it comes with a minimalist design so that it won’t clash with your outfit. It also comes in different colors so you can add fun to your everyday life. Summer Hair and Skincare Essentials

Refreshing serums, nourishing lotions with sun protection, frizz-foiling masks and more

For many people, slathering on oils and lotions in the colder months likely feels more finessed than weighing down one’s skin and hair in the sweltering summer heat. Still, the warmer months present specific circumstances that are necessary to address, from intense UV rays to humidity causing frizz. Some of the following products are crucial for health, while others are more about aesthetics, but all are effective during sweaty days and balmy nights.

Mineral Sunscreen

From recently launched Ourself—a skincare brand underpinned by a patent-pending delivery system of effective ingredients—this mineral sunscreen ($75) provides broad spectrum, reef-friendly protection from UVA and UVB rays. The formula also incorporates Firming Intides™ (peptides that smooth the skin), as well as vitamin E, sunflower extract and bisabolol (antioxidants that nourish and soothe) and rice bran extract and jojoba esters, which increase the skin’s suppleness. This formula is ideal for warmer months, replacing the thick, heavy texture of many sunscreens with a super-light feel and finish.

“CEDELLA” Papaya Enzyme Toner

From BAO (aka The Black Apothecary Office Inc), an accelerator for Black and Latinx creators in the beauty and wellness space founded by Jae Joseph and Brianna Wise, comes the refreshing and alcohol-free “CEDELLA” Papaya Enzyme Toner ($65). For all skins types, the 5.8-oz toner utilizes geranium, sage and cucumber extract, in addition to the papaya extract enzymes, to tone and stimulate beautifully. For those who shy away from toners during the winter, it’s especially refreshing during the warmer months.

Takamichi Hair Kit

Developed by the acclaimed NYC-based stylist Takamichi Saeki, founder of the Lower East Side salon Takamichi Hair, this “ultimate hair kit” ($76) includes a luscious, nourishing shampoo and a strengthening conditioner (both in large 12 fl oz bottles). Saeki spent four years perfecting his Takamichi product line of everyday essentials—invoking his more than 20 years of hands-on experience with clients. Each is produced in Italy from potent components born of a unique ultrasound extraction. From camellia seed oil to sage, these well-crafted haircare solutions provide luster and accommodate sensitive scalps.

Cleansing Body + Scalp Polish

Refreshing and nourishing, the Cleansing Body + Scalp Polish ($55) from Natureofthings incorporates moroccan lava clay for detoxification and essential oils (lavender, geranium and grapefruit peel) for hydration. Use it as a shampoo or a body soap, it will leave hair feeling silky and skin feeling supple and smooth.

Apple Cider Vinegar Daily Scalp Serum

New from dpHUE, this Apple Cider Vinegar Daily Scalp Serum ($49) provides lightweight hydration while also promoting hair growth. This refreshing formula feels cool and soothing on the scalp, and doesn’t contain any oil so it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. Made with apple cider vinegar, apple stem cells, peptides, maca root, hyaluronic acid, lavender extract, aloe vera and fire tulip, this potion calms itchiness and stimulates dormant hair follicles. The brand suggests daily use, with just a half dropper enough for full coverage.

Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask

With patented peptide technology, K18’s leave-in molecular repair hair mask ($75) acts as a bond-builder and works to reconnect broken keratin chains. After washing hair (and skipping the conditioner), simply emulsify a pump or two (depending on hair length) of this lightweight cream in hands before running it through damp tresses, then wait four minutes before styling or adding more product. The result is softer, bouncier hair that clumps more effectively (for those aiming for natural curls) and feels silkier. It also helps to reduce breakage, brittleness and frizz—a woe for many in hot, humid weather.

’70s Bedspread Apple Soap

Cumberland, Maine-based homewares brand Wary Meyers’ collection of limited edition art soaps includes this cheerful ’70s Bedspread Apple iteration ($16)—a 100% vegetable-based soap in a retro color scheme. Scented with a tinge of apple, the small-batch soap pays homage to the myriad designs these hues have been incorporated into over time.

Café Noir Body Exfoliant

The potent Café Noir Body Exfoliant ($100) from African Botanics treats dryness and poor circulation, while also promoting skin’s elasticity. This chemical and physical exfoliating scrub is packed with active ingredients, including black coffee beans, volcanic pumice, Marula nut shell, Buchu leaf, Cape Rose geranium, cypress oil, niacinamide and more—a formula that leaves skin feeling soft, clean and with a slight tingle.

Touch of Hydration Set

While sunscreen is no new thing, Supergoop’s Touch of Hydration Set ($52) includes not only an SPF body butter, but also a hand cream with sun protection. It’s the first-ever preventative potion of its kind, and the hand screen comes in a handy, transportable 30ml tube. Both formulas offer SPF 40 protection (with active Avobenzone, Octisalate and  Octocrylene) but they absorb quickly and don’t leave a chalky residue. There’s a subtle, refreshing fragrance of eucalyptus, clove and vanilla that doesn’t overpower.

Serving Friends Utensils

Brooklyn-based designer Selena Liu merges humor and child-like joy with functional objects, and her Serving Friends utensils are no exception. Coming in three playful styles—flowers, hands and wavy—these wooden spoons bring whimsy to the dining table.
