Fossils Woven on a Bed of Embroidery

Sebastião Salgado : an Exhibition about the Fragility of Water

This evolved glasses case pulls double duty as a power bank for your phone

Some things have remained unchanged for decades, but that doesn’t mean there’s no more room for improvement.

The number of items we put inside our bags seems to be growing every year to the point that some people are looking for ways to either get rid of some of them or at least combine them. Some things, however, are just indispensable, like the charging case for your earbuds, your emergency power bank for your gadgets, and, if you wear glasses, a protective case for your spectacles. Along with paper notebooks that might also be found inside those bags, those glasses cases haven’t exactly seen any significant improvement in both design and purpose. In fact, most of them are designed to break easily and be thrown away just as easily. One designer, however, realized it’s high time to give this protective accessory an upgrade by merging it with one of the most essential accessories people need these days.

Designer: Khaled Mohamed

Some ideas come like a flash of lightning, while others take a long time to percolate. Still, others tend to take detours, as in the case of this mashup of two important things inside many people’s bags. The first attempt to modernize the glasses case ended up putting an external SSD aimed at workers on the go. It turned out, however, that there was more demand for a more common mobile accessory that could be useful to almost anyone, which is how the Glasses Case Battery Bank plan was finally put into motion.

As the name so clearly states, this product combines a case for glasses with a battery bank. That is indeed more useful for almost everyone because everyone has a phone these days. And while you might not have prescription glasses, there might always be a time when you have to bring sunglasses with you, even the rather expensive kind. Sadly, almost all but the most expensive eyewear have cases that are designed with quality and longevity in mind.

In contrast, this combo aims for both with an added touch of modern convenience. The case will be covered by Italian calfskin leather, prized for its durability and its softness. On the inside, Japanese Ultrasuede will keep your glasses safe and clean while also protecting the power bank with a soft interior. As for that battery pack, it is planned to bear a 4,000 mAh capacity, enough to juice up most phones these days at least once.

If you think that combining a glasses case and a battery bank will create a rather bulky structure, then you’re half right. The design of this accessory seems to be partly inspired by origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. When acting as a glasses case, it takes the form of a prism with the battery bank serving as the solid base. Without the glasses, however, the sides of the case can unfold and wrap around the power bank, creating a more compact form.

The Glasses Case Battery Bank doesn’t exist yet in a form you can buy, though. It will be hitting crowdfunding soon and lures a tempting $99 price tag for early believers of that vision. The product will also be manufactured in the US and Canada, which should at least help reduce the carbon footprint and costs when shipping to backers in North America.

Titan has a lightweight, ergonomic, and sustainable stand for every device

Just when you thought you could never have the best of all worlds, along comes the Titan 3-in-1 SnapStand Kit to prove you wrong.

Device stands come in all shapes and sizes, catering to different types of devices, different styles, and different use cases. Some try to lift laptop screens to a more ergonomic height, while others are geared to make vlogging with phones more viable. While these sometimes do succeed in delivering their intended function, they often sacrifice other aspects like convenience, stability, or even environment-friendliness. It seems almost impossible for one stand to be able to check off all the right boxes while catering to all kinds of devices, but that’s exactly the kind of miracle that the Titan SnapStand system is putting on the table, figuratively and literally.

Designer: Ergomi Design

Click Here to Buy Now: $140 for the fullset $267 (48% off). Hurry, only 48/100 left!

Laptop, tablet, and phone stands are sometimes lightweight but flimsy, stable but rigid, slim but unsustainable. Many are good for holding one type of device in a specific position or orientation, but their convenience disappears once you try to use them for anything else. Titan, in contrast, seems to have it all. It’s lightweight, stable, multi-functional, long-lasting, and even sustainable. And while there isn’t one size to fit them all, you can mix and match to your heart’s content, using the Max laptop stand to hold a tablet and a phone at the same time, for example.

The Titan’s stability comes not only from its use of 430 stainless steel on the front and space-grade aluminum on its back, two materials that also provide the stand’s long life. All stands in this kit utilize a patented triangle structure that offers the most stable shape that doesn’t require heaping on unnecessary parts for support. Unlike other stands, the Titan uses a premium mechanical hinge that delivers that stability, regardless of its angle. The stand is so stable that you can set an iPad on it and draw on the tablet without the stand budging even an inch.

Tri-angle Structure – The shape offers the best holding stability. You can turn the iPad and keep drawing a circle, the stand would not move.

Unlimited Angeles – Equipped with a premium mechanical hinge, it has a silky smooth motion with a special damping setting.

From 360º Ways – Alternate between landscape/portrait mode smoothly and easily, like an invisible monitor arm.

Universal MagHolder – If your device doesn’t support magnetic attachment and you find it unnecessary to tag on anything to make it work like that, the MagHolder finishes the job cleanly and neatly without sticking anything on your work tool.

More than just keeping your device propped up, the Titan SnapStands allow you to elevate your phone or your tablet to a more comfortable height, even when the stand is already at its highest angle possible. You can also easily set your mobile device in landscape or portrait orientation using the same stand with a simple swivel. All of these are thanks to the power of magnets that securely attaches your device to the surface of the Titan. For those who aren’t inclined to stick the MagSticker on the back of their phone or tablet, there’s also MagHolder that uses a similar strong magnet to lift your device at your preferred height.

All that talk about stability, durability, hinges, and magnets, you might worry that the Titan SnapStands are hard, cold, and uncomfortable sheets of metal that would cut into your skin or whatever you might have in your bag. On the contrary, the designers have applied a generous amount of vegan leather and PU material to cover the stands, making them feel great in your hands while also offering slip resistance. Plus, it gives the accessories a more sustainable message compared to ones that use flimsy and non-recyclable plastics.

Ergonomic, lightweight, stable, multi-angular, multi-functional, durable, and sustainable, the Titan 3-in-1 SnapStand Kit has it all. Even better, it’s also accessible, starting at $35 for the Titan Mini Stand for phones. There are also different combinations you can pick to save even more. Plus, there’s also a new basic Titan Lite that’s just as lite on the wallet at $25. With the Titan SnapStand, you can go big on ergonomics and comfort, but never in size and price.

Top 10 products designed to provide you with a smooth & effortless bathroom experience

We may not pay attention to our bathrooms very often, but the truth is they’re the little alcoves we spend a substantial amount of our time in, carrying out our personal activities. It’s probably the only time we’re ever truly alone, and bathrooms are like our own personal zones. Hence amping up our bathroom with essential accessories and handy product designs is quite important. These little products can make a huge difference in our everyday bathroom experience. They not only help us carry out our personal and grooming activities even more easily, but they also help us take care of ourselves and our washrooms a little better! From an unconventional weighing scale designed to look like a set of tiles to a smart eco-friendly shower with a pressure-sensitive floor panel – we’ve curated a whole collection of innovative and functional bathroom accessories for you!

1. The Tandem Shower

Designed to attach directly to your existing showerhead, the Tandem Shower is an easy-to-install no-plumber-required shower accessory that distributes your shower into two distinct streams. Although perfect for couples, the Tandem Shower also makes a pretty compelling case for solo showers with a much more luxurious, immersive 360° shower experience (think Ross Geller in the tanning booth).

Why is it noteworthy?

The Tandem Shower comes with an adjustable design, allowing it to fit in most bathrooms. It connects directly to your existing showerhead’s water inlet, which effectively distributes the water supply between the two showerheads. A valve on the Tandem Shower then lets you effectively switch between either of the showerheads or run both simultaneously. It’s worth noting that the Tandem Shower was also designed keeping other considerations in mind – for starters, it comes with a flexible hose that lets you mount your Tandem with plenty of clearance, allowing for a second showerhead that’s much higher than your current one (especially useful for taller people).

What we like

  • The Tandem showerhead also comes mounted on a ball and socket joint, letting you angle-adjust your water flow as you would with the existing shower
  • The high-velocity setting in particular delivers nearly two times more force than standard showerheads

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

2. Air Spa

You know that age-old trend of drying yourself with a towel after a shower? Boring, no? And pretty time-consuming too, if you ask me. I mean it’s 2021, we definitely need a cooler way of drying ourselves. I guess BDCI Design thought the same because they designed ‘Air Spa’…a body dryer! Yes, you read that right. The South Korean design consultancy created a dryer for your body, and defines it as a “refreshing bathroom experience”. The tall vertical appliance blows out air to dry your body after you take a shower.

Why is it noteworthy?

So, where does the spa bit of ‘Air Spa’ come into play? The appliance’s unique form and height support various little holes that blow out air. These ‘air holes’ feature multiple layers, and can be positioned vertically or horizontally, however you prefer. So, you have air blowing at you from different angles and positions, mimicking the experience of a massage or spa. It’s almost like a wind bath if you ask me. And, it could be the ultimate last step in unwinding after a long day at work.

What we like

  • Air Spa’s interesting height makes it perfect for users of all ages. The vertical appliance can be used for children and adults alike
  • Reduces our laundry load!

What we dislike

  • Unsuitable for tiny bathrooms with space constraints

3. K-25 Smart Bath towels

Most of the time when we are ready to shower, our towel isn’t.  All it has to do is absorb excess water quickly, dry out between uses, and be durable and soft at the same time. Do we expect too much? The team behind K-25 Smart Bath towels spent years in research and development to finally create one: a giant waffle weave towel that soaks water as a super-sponge. They have a big community of cult-like following around the world, for a reason.

Why is it noteworthy?

Design similar to our breakfast favorite waffle comes with a load of benefits. The waffle texture gently exfoliates your skin, while the waffle honeycombs help the towel easily absorb all the water in one quick pass. It also dries itself twice faster, thanks to an airy weave and breathability. Being surprisingly lightweight, but feels thick, fluffy, and soft to the skin. Great for the hair too, as it soaks all the moisture quickly eliminating the frizz. The towels are generously sized, so you can easily wipe your entire body with them, and comfortably wrap it around your waist when you’re done.

What we like

  • The K-25 Smart towel is created to be naturally antibacterial
  • Thanks to its waffle texture, it is quick-drying too, so you’re never faced with a damp towel because it didn’t sufficiently dry off

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

4. The Shower Scrubber

With a dual-sided design that lets you choose between a softer massaging side and an effective exfoliating side, the Shower Scrubber comes from the folks at Casamera, who shook up the industry with their ridiculously comfortable and absorbent bath towels and robes earlier this year. The Shower Scrubber comes with a radical new redesign, sporting a honeycomb pattern on one side, to open your skin pores, and a walnut-shell textured surface on the other side, for scrubbing off dead cells to leave your skin shining.

Why is it noteworthy?

While Konjac sponges aren’t new (the internet’s absolutely littered with them), the Shower Scrubber unlocks its true potential with its design and the various infusions. The large guitar-pick-shaped design comes with a honeycomb texture on one side, inspired by Casamera’s waffle-textured towels. The honeycomb texture helps gently massage and pamper the skin (especially around the face), open the pores, and more importantly, is incredibly effective at building up a lather. The other side, however, is a textural contrast, as the sponge comes with particles of walnut shells suspended within the surface, offering an exfoliating experience that’s great at removing dead skin on your body to reveal shining, supple, radiant skin underneath.

What we like

  • Dual sides to meet the different needs of your skin
  • Biodegradable

What we dislike

  • Not sure how well it would work on sensitive skin

5. The Lylo

Lylo Portable Washing Machine Concept

Lylo Portable Washing Machine Concept

The Lylo is a concept design that helps promote water efficiency. Lylo Products is a startup by designers Paramveer Bhachu and Joanna Power. The company is dedicated to making devices that deliver innovative ways to reuse water.

Why is it noteworthy?

The washing machine system includes a removable water tank that one can place on the shower floor. When the tank is filled after showering, you return it to the base to be filtered and then used in the laundry, so it’s suitable for cleaning clothes. The entire laundry cycle can be done in 15 minutes. The system isn’t final yet, but the Lylo washing machine designers have been sharing their vision for the product.

What we like

  • Portable design
  • Promotes water efficiency

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

6. The‘At the Same Time Body Dryer’

At the Same Time Dryer Concept Image

At the Same Time Dryer Concept Photos

The ‘At the Same Time Body Dryer’ is an attempt to make public bath facilities more convenient, efficient, and fast. Speedy bathing and drying are possible with this concept body dryer as more can dry off at the same time.

Why is it noteworthy?

The name alone tells us its unique selling point. The round square shape of the dryer allows four persons to stand and be dried off. The four parts are separated by an opaque transition that offers privacy. They may be facing each other but private parts are still covered. The footrest in whole features concentric circles that provide a softer surface for the feet. The footrest is divided into four equal parts and each part can be removed for cleaning. The water doesn’t stay on the footrest as it drips.

What we like

  • Hastens drying time

What we dislike

  • It’s still a concept!

7. Smart Shower

Designer Natasha Jadhav decided to create a ‘Smart Shower’. This shower is truly smart, interactive, and not to mention aesthetically pleasing too! Jadhav struck the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality with this design. Jadhav’s smart shower consists of the actual shower on the ceiling of the bathroom, a sleek white console that holds panels, and a hand shower, as well as a pressure-sensitive panel on the floor.

Why is it noteworthy?

Did you know that around 2.5 gallons of water are wasted at home while taking a shower? Imagine the amount of water wasted after an entire month or year of showering. Tremendous, and quite alarming! Now, showering isn’t something we can particularly avoid, hence designer Natasha Jadhav created a ‘Smart Shower’.

What we like

  • Pressure-sensitive floor panel that turns off the water once you’re done showering
  • Intuitive controls

What we dislike

  • The shower automatically switches off after five minutes of zero activity – the wait period could be shorter

8. The YOKU towel

There exist two schools of thought with towels (and we’ve covered them both). Some prefer a coarse towel that’s designed to exfoliate as it dries your skin, others prefer a towel that’s absorbent, but also as soft and gentle as your favorite comforter or fuzzy winter sweater. Designed to fit squarely into the latter school of thought, the YOKU towel feels like hugging a polar bear. Made from the softest and finest Suvin cotton (often referred to as White Gold), the towels are devotedly hand-crafted in Imabari, a Japanese town that’s perfected the art of towel-making.

Why is it noteworthy?

With a history in towel-making spanning over 120 years, it’s safe to say that the craftspeople in Imabari know a thing or two about towel-making. Designed to be the equivalent of silk clothing, the Yoku towels wrap you in soft luxury. They’re so soft that they come recommended for babies too, and are designed to be extremely gentle on their delicate skin. The towels are meant for wiping, but they’re also meant for everything else. They act as comforters, are soft enough to be hugged, or even used as security blankets.

What we like

  • Hand-crafted in Imabari, a small town in Japan
  • Weaved using 100% Suvin cotton

What we dislike

  • No complaints!

9. The PURE 2-in-1 Electric Oral Care Kit

PURE 2-in-1 Oral Care Kit Details

Dyson-inspired PURE 2-in-1 Oral Care Kit

This Dyson-inspired oral care essential system is promised to have long-lasting durability. It doesn’t just look like something Dyson would introduce in terms of the colors and aesthetics; it also practices the same sustainability principle. It’s an electric toothbrush and water flosser in one.

Why is it noteworthy?

Like any Dyson product, the PURE 2-in-1 Electric Oral Care Kit offers innovation, reliability, and functionality. It is a creative system that saves space and allows more straightforward operation. You can use it either as a toothbrush or a water flosser when you need to deep clean your mouth. Just change the head module if you want to use the water flosser mode. There is a built-in airflow fan that can keep the brush head clean. It also prevents moisture so you can be confident your toothbrush is not contaminated.

What we like

  • It comes with a built-in water container for the water flosser
  • The brushes and the handles are stored inside to keep your bathroom clutter-free

What we dislike

  • It’s still a concept!

10. The Tiles Weight Scale

It takes a keen eye to be able to question the design of products we take for granted. Why are certain products like weighing scales designed the way they are? Given that they’re just literally a platform to stand on, why can’t they look more in tune with their surroundings? Designer Sije Chen found himself questioning that logic, which led to the design brief behind the Tiles Weight Scale. Simply put, the bathroom scale looks literally bathroom-inspired. With a glossy, tiled design, the product fits perfectly into the contemporary bathroom, looking more like functional decor than an appliance. Rather cool, no?

Why is it noteworthy?

A finalist at the Spark Awards last year, the Tiles Weight Scale looks like a panel of your quintessential ceramic bathroom tiles. They aren’t made from ceramic, which means they aren’t slippery, and the white panel has an LED display that shines through the material, activating the moment you stand on it. That way, it serves its purpose wonderfully when it needs to, and blends right into the bathroom’s decor when not in use!

What we like

  • Perfectly blends into your bathroom
  • Non-slippery

What we dislike

  • Has more of an aesthetic purpose, than a functional one

Someone built a LEGO lawnmower that (sort of) works?!

In an alternate universe where grass was made from LEGO bricks, this lawnmower would be all the rage.

Yep. Someone did it. A master builder by the name of BrickinSchmirtz no less (points if you get that reference). Say hello to the LEGO Lawnmower – an MOC that actually comes with a functional pull string, motorized blades, a grass catcher, and rotating + height-adjusting wheels. It won’t chop actual grass, but it’s functional in the same way this LEGO Polaroid is functional – it comes with accurately positioned moving parts.

Designer: BrickinSchmirtz

This nifty little MOC (My Own Creation) just received a Staff Pick recommendation on the LEGO Ideas leaderboard. The 1576-piece build comes with an incredibly realistic scaled-down design and features all the parts you’d find in a regular lawnmower. Built with a classic red colorway, this little creation has wheels, a motor-box that pops open to reveal a pair of rotating blades on the inside. The motor is ‘operated’ by an actual functioning pull-string that you can tug on, and your lawnmower even has a grass catcher, filled with faux LEGO-brick grass!

For BrickinSchmirtz, the challenge was more about learning to incorporate motors into their builds. This one actually has a functioning motor, the creator says, that works when you tug on the pull string. It does get the blades to move in a rotary fashion, but given that the blades are made from LEGO too, they don’t do much in terms of cutting grass. Or cutting anything, really.

What’s so beautiful about this build is the fact that it acts as a recurring reminder of how incredibly versatile LEGO bricks are. People have actually built ‘functional’ typewriters and even a vintage cash register in the past, and this lawnmower merely adds to an ever-expanding series of projects that showcase the sheer power of LEGO bricks.

BrickinSchmirtz is currently in the process of collecting votes from the LEGO Ideas community, with over 1,000 votes in the bag. If their design reaches the coveted 10,000 vote benchmark, LEGO will turn their creation into a box-set that us ordinary folk can buy and build. Self-sufficient cabin in the forest is a green retreat for only $165k

One of my dreams (and a lot of people’s dreams probably) is to be able to work remotely in a small cabin somewhere in the middle of nature and then disconnect from the world after the work is done. That will most likely remain a dream in the near future but seeing other people’s dream come true is a hobby I’ve developed lately. I also take notes so that if ever I get to live out this plan someday, I know what I want and how to get it.

Designer: ZeroCabin

Two sisters in Chile got the ZeroCabin crew to help create their dream retreat in a forest in the Lake District. The cabin faces the sea on the east and then on the west, you can see a 70-meter tall hill so you get a perfect view either way. They designed the north facade to have open windows and expanded the east facade to allow more sun to illuminate the house obliquely. And since the area has extreme humidity during the winter, they elevated the cabin 1.5 meters above the ground. The 1,184-square-foot cabin has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and living area on the ground floor, and a loft on the third floor.

Following their previous designs, this ZeroCabin Krul uses timber as a frame for the entire structure but with structural insulated panels with pulverized cardboard. The cabin is built to be green and so it uses a two-kilowatt solar system for its electrical needs and a five-cycle system that collects rainwater for its water needs. Shower water is also collected and is used to flush the toilet. The bathroom waste is treated with the Toha System, a vermicomposting process that lets earthworms turn them into nutrient-rich humus.

The ZeroCabin way is to start out the house as a kit of parts and then bring it to the location where they assemble it. Since the location is a bit remote and had to pass along a steep road, they had to use a light pickup truck to transport everything including cement and rubble for its foundation. The best news for the sisters is that the cabin was completed for just $165,000 as they used natural materials as well as affordable but sustainable technologies.

The geometric-shaped cabin doesn’t look so out of place in the middle of the forest and in the inlet of the Pacific Ocean as it was specifically designed to be “in humble dialogue with the surrounding nature”. The sisters got a grand reveal as they wanted to be surprised and based on their reaction (“they cried with happiness), they indeed got the self-sufficient retreat of their dreams.
