The Aeolus Headphone’s dual headband design lets it rest more comfortably on your head

With an innovatively designed winged headband that promises better comfort (without spoiling your hairstyle too), the Aeolus Headphones are one of the most unusual we’ve seen. Most headphones opt for one of two headband styles – one with a direct band that rests on your head, and heavier headphones that opt for a ‘reverse hammock’ style leather or fabric headband that’s supported by a metal spine above it. The Aeolus design is a hybrid between the two, with an external headband that runs from left to right, as well as two winged bands that actually rest against your head, creating a flexible cushion that feels comfortable even for longer hours.

Designers: Chui Pak Ho Tony & Tsang Xian Ting Jonathan

“Aeolus is intricately designed to convey a sense of elegance and prestige which challenges the common misconception that aesthetics and audio performance cannot coexist”, say designers Tony Chui and Jonathan Tsang. The headphone’s re-engineered wing system self-adjusts and conforms to the contours of a user’s head effortlessly, equally enhancing form and functionality. The way the two headbands cross over, in an X format, gives the Aeolus a sense of dynamism that sets it apart from anything else you’ve probably seen.

The outer headband also blends seamlessly into the audio units by wrapping around them in a way that guides the eyes. The cans themselves sport a sem-open-back design, allowing for a clearer, less muffled sound that’s generated by the Aeolus’ 40mm aluminum-magnesium drivers.

The Most Valuable Car in the World: the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe

The iconic car was auctioned for €135 million, creating a new youth scholarship fund

On 5 May, a 1955 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe was auctioned at the Mercedes-Benz museum where it set a new record for the most valuable car of all time. Sold for €135 million to a private collector, the automotive icon—revered for its remarkable design and technology—is one of the two prototypes that were built at the time by its creator and chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut.

Proceeds from the auction will be used to establish the Mercedes-Benz Fund, a global scholarship program that will provide financial and career opportunities to young people studying technology as it relates to decarbonization and environmental science. The initiative (which will be jointly managed by a partner who has not yet been decided) is divided into two categories: university scholarships to encourage and empower students to study sustainability, and school scholarships, which will help young pupils realize local, environmental projects in their community. All programs will focus on those who do not typically have the financial access to these projects or studies.

“As a global company and as a luxury brand we bear a great level of responsibility towards society,” says Renata Jungo Brüngger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG for Integrity and Legal Affairs and a part of the governance for the Mercedes-Benz Fund. “We will establish the global scholarship program  supporting young people in their studies, commitment and actions towards a more sustainable future. We are convinced that access to education in these areas will be crucial in encountering the great challenges of our time and contribute to greater stability, prosperity and social cohesion.”

The legacy of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe goes beyond its advanced design and engine to make history as the most valuable car of all time,  inspiring and funding the work of future generations.

Acer Aspire Vero laptops made from recycled plastic, ready for a more sustainable planet

Aspire Vero 14 Features

Acer continues to be a leader in the laptop market. It is the preferred brand not only for education but also for gaming. Of course, that can be argued, but when it comes to tech, we welcome any company as long a product delivers a great performance as needed.

Acer has just introduced a slew of new products from the Vero Series. The eco-conscious product portfolio includes two new Aspire Vero notebooks, the Veriton Vero all-in-one (AIO) desktop, new Vero monitors, a new Vero mouse and keyboard, and a Vero PD2325W projector. All of these products make use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, as well as recyclable packaging.

Designer: Acer

Aspire Vero 15 Laptop

Aspire Vero 14 Laptop

We’ll focus on the two Aspire Vero laptops as these have been sustainably designed. They both run on the 12th Gen Intel Core processors and come with 14- and 15-inch Full HD displays. The Aspire Vero notebooks result from the brand’s commitment to making a more sustainable future. The “green” computers are made from recycled plastic, starting with the chassis. The latter uses 30% PCR plastic, saving some 21% in CO2 emissions. It’s also paint-free to lower the negative impact of VOCs.

The Aspire Vero notebooks are also easy to disassemble, which makes them ideal for upgrades, repairs, and even recycling. This series was actually given a few recognitions and awards. It was recognized at the Good Design Award 2021 and was a Reddot Winner for Packaging Design in 2021. It boasts an EPEAT Silver registration, so we know the products are really environment-friendly, and the claims are not just for marketing purposes.

Aspire Vero 15 Laptop Materials

On the base panel, you will see there is a Post Consumer Recycled logo to show the laptop is manufactured using post-consumer resins. Those PCR plastics are more sustainable, eco-frirendly, and can help reduce landfill waste. The bottom and top cover of the laptop, plus the operating surface and the screen bezel, are all made of 30% PCR materials. Even the keycaps (keyboards) use 50% PCR, so the laptop is really “green.”

Acer is all about reducing waste and adapting to the needs of the planets. The laptops can be easily upgraded as you can quickly take them apart, thanks to the use of standard screws. Acer has implemented the VeroSense smart battery management app for further energy efficiency.

Aspire Vero 14 Specs

Acer describes the new laptops as “Green but Mean” as the latest Intel processors power them. The Aspire Vero (AV14-51) uses 12th Gen Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Xe graphics. It comes equipped with WiFi 6, a couple of USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, and a Thunderbolt 4/USB Type-C port. In addition, it comes with a 14-inch Full HD display ideal for work, school, or entertainment.

Acer Aspire Vero 15 Specs

The Aspire Vero (AV15-52) has a more prominent 15-inch Full HD display. It also runs on 12th Gen Intel Core processors and features the same USB 3.2 Type-A Gen1 ports and Thunderbolt 4/USB Type-C port. Like the 14-inch version, you can charge mobile devices even when the Vera notebook is turned off. The 15-inch laptop comes in Cobblestone Grey and Starry Black while the other laptop is also ready in Cobblestone Grey and Mariana Blue.

Acer Aspire Vero 15 Features

Both notebook computers even feature a Full HD camera to allow premium quality video-conferencing. This makes collaborating and connecting more enjoyable as you can see people more clearly than ever. Furthermore, to continue with the eco-friendly theme, both Aspire Vero laptops use OceanGlass trackpads. These are also “green” innovations from ocean-bound plastic.

Acer worked closely with Intel to ensure the computers met the requirements to be considered Intel Evo laptops. They meet Intel’s hardware specifications that allow improved battery life, responsiveness, fast charging, intelligent collaboration, and instant wake. We can expect a powerful performance from these two laptops, whether for work, school, business, or entertainment.

Acer Aspire Vero Laptop Series

Now let’s talk about pricing when the two laptops drop in September in the US. The Acer Aspire Vero (AV14-51) will be $749.99. However, it will come earlier in the EMEA and China this August for EUR 899 and RMB 4,999, respectively.

Availability of the Acer Aspire Vero (AV15-52) in the said regions and countries will be the same. It will be $749.99 in the US and EUR 999 and RMB 4,999 in EMEA and China beginning in August. The two Acer Aspire Vero laptops will continue the Taiwanese tech giant’s sustainable efforts, and we believe they won’t be the last.

Nine Transparent LG OLED Screens Display Jennifer and Kevin McCoy’s Digital Art at Frieze New York

This expansive NFT is emphasized by the future-forward technology it’s presented upon

Frieze New York returns to the The Shed for a second year, populating four floors with ruminative and eye-catching works from hundreds of artists and 65 galleries (both local and international). The uppermost level of the art fair (numerically, floor eight) houses brand partners, champagne and cocktails and one futuristic installation powered by LG Electronics. It is here that nine Transparent OLED Signage screens display the digital art of NFT pioneer Kevin McCoy and collaborator Jennifer McCoy. Known as “Quantum Leap: Dark Star” (2022), the awe-inspiring, expansive artwork incorporates previous creations from McCoy’s Quantum Leap: Primordial Star series—though here they drain of color, transform into a memento mori and then explode with vibrancy once again. It’s also been tokenized on the blockchain, thus rendering it as an NFT.

The McCoys have other imaginative artworks on site—including an ever-changing generative NFT named “Quantum Leap: Primordial Star 3” (2022)—but the sci-fi-like magnitude of “Quantum Leap: Dark Star” cannot be ignored. Viewers can approach the piece from either side, or stand back and observe the metamorphosis from afar. Composing this digital canvas is self-lit OLED technology, which enables rich color, clarity and brightness. It’s a prime example of the ever-more-frequent instances where technology reinforces the art within.

Elisa Uberti’s ceramic handcrafted lamps are beautiful pieces of art

Elisa Uberti Édifice Horizon Cocon

Elisa Uberti is an artist known for her ceramic works. This ceramist knows art and design, which is very evident in her products.

Uberti has released a vast collection of stoneware lamps. Every item is handcrafted, so that makes every piece special. The lamps don’t really light up the whole room but provide just enough illumination for objects on your table or the surroundings. The designer has a passion for timeless objects and refined subjects, so she maintains the art of handcraft.

The designer’s stoneware lamps are stunning with their curves and shapes that are products of spontaneous gestures. Such are balanced with technical constraints so you can see the creativity of the lamps. The beauty of ceramics is something that has attracted people since the beginning of civilization. It’s not a lost art, but artists and creatives must consciously keep the craft. This craftsmanship is there to stay, but there is a call to keep the art alive.

In this day and age, when 3D printing is becoming more common and more affordable, handcrafted items may soon become rare. But, of course, those of us in the design world will not let that happen. That is why we support the efforts of artists like Elisa Uberti.

Elisa Uberti’s primary material is stoneware. It’s her favorite, enabling her to design and create unique lamps and sculptures. Without light, her lamps can stand alone as interesting sculptures that can drive conversations.

Elisa Uberti Horizon 4 Sidelamp

All the shapes and curves are comforting as they respond to manual gestures. Every lamp is unique and appears a challenge to recreate. Her inspirations vary from nature to space to architecture and even nomadism. Uberti’s art speaks poetry. Every piece is based on organic and multiple inspirations, so you can see the lamps appear natural and really handmade.

Here are some samples of Elisa Uberti’s art. She has designed dozens of ceramic lamps already. We hope more artists will be inspired by her passion, skills, and advocacies. She blends design and art in every work. It’s pronounced in her work that modernity and tradition can co-exist. As long as you have a constant drive for art, creativity, and life.

The artist refers to emotional shapes, including architecture, caves, refuges, and mini shelters. They can also be “protective dwellings for microorganisms”. Let’s take a look at some of her creations.

Elisa Uberti Baume 1

This is Baume #1. It is a handmade minimalistic white stoneware product that stands 50cm. The ceramist has described that she made it by hand with coiling techniques in her workshop in Roubaix, France. It’s created without using templates or molds and then baked in a ceramic oven. The res of her ceramic lamps are handcrafted and made with the same material and process. Some lamps have been painted though, to add more life and fun to the collection.

Acer ConceptD 500 is a sleek, minimalist yet powerful PC tower

Acer ConceptD 500 Specs

Acer has recently introduced a slew of new products. We already looked into the Aspire Vero laptops, and now we’re ready to focus on the ConceptD 500.

This computing device comes in a tower form, ready to deliver powerful performance with its 12th Gen Intel Core i9 processor and GeForce RTX 3070 or NVIDIA RTX A4000 GPU for improved multitasking. The NVIDIA Studio RTX GPU is very much ideal for creative workflows. The PC also runs on a max of 128 GB DDR4 3200 Mhz of memory. It can accommodate up to 4TB HDD and up to 4TB of M.2 Gen 4 SSD, so you are guaranteed more—almost unlimited storage.

Designer: Acer

Acer ConceptD 500 Tower

The ConceptD 500 Desktop lets you create without limits. It’s a powerful desktop PC that can help you with intensive tasks like video editing, 3D animation, 3D modeling, and other complicated design projects that need speed and efficiency.

Design-wise, the desktop PC tower appears minimalist in white. It looks timeless and comes with amber lighting for that warm appeal. It’s considered mid-sized at 20L but delivers powerful Windows 11 performance. The elegant package makes it look fragile, but it’s not, especially with its powerful promises.

Acer ConceptD 500

The clean and minimal design makes it a more stylish and attractive choice, but its worth goes beyond the form. This tower computer comes in a sleek design but is packed with specs and features that can handle hard-core computing, especially tasks that need a lot of resources and storage. It’s also quiet and remains silent at all times, thanks to the front air intake design that allows optimized cooling. As a result, noise levels are mainly kept at only 40 dbA and below.

Acer ConceptD 500 Features

Acer ConceptD 500 DetailsCompared to the previous model, this one is smaller and only has a wooden accent around the top edges. The old model arrived with a wooden panel, so this one looks different and is more distinguishable. The front IO ports are also easily accessible, while the warm amber indicator light adds to its modern appeal.

Acer ConceptD 500 Design

Since this computer is for major computing tasks, it comes with numerous ports that let you connect to other gadgets or storage devices. There is also an integrated SD card reader and a USB Type-C port that can handle 10 Gbps of data transfer. In addition, its LAN connection can reach up to 2.5Gbps high-speed. All these and more mean file and data sharing is easier and more seamless. The full-sized features and compact design combined make the Acer ConceptD 500 a real winner.

’70s Bedspread Apple Soap

Cumberland, Maine-based homewares brand Wary Meyers’ collection of limited edition art soaps includes this cheerful ’70s Bedspread Apple iteration—a 100% vegetable-based soap in a retro color scheme. Scented with a tinge of apple, the small-batch soap pays homage to the myriad designs these hues have been incorporated into over time.

This Octo Finissimo Ultra Watch is Just 1.8mm Thick

This is Bulgari’s incredible Octo Finissimo Ultra Watch, which is so thin it looks like reality’s warping:

The sandblasted titanium watch is just 1.8mm thick, and the band is even thinner at 1.5mm.

“Octo Finissimo Ultra watch with mechanical manufacture ultra-thin movement, manual winding, regulator display, BVL180 caliber, 28’800vph (4hz) and 50 hours of power reserve. 40 mm case (1.80 mm thick) in sandblasted titanium, tungsten carbide main plate, hour and minute regulator displays in black PVD hands, second wheel with black index indicator, winding and time-setting wheels in stainless steel, stainless steel ratchet engraved with a unique QR code linked to an exclusive NFT artwork, sandblasted titanium bracelet with an integrated folding buckle.”

The exposed mechanisms look amazing, but I’m disappointed that a large chunk of the display is taken up by that silly QR code and its purpose. As Bulgari explains: “A unique QR code engraving offers the ability to connect to a NFT and the metaverse, bridging the mechanical world with that of a digital dimension.”

Then again, I say “I’m disappointed” as if I could actually afford to buy one of these. It’s limited edition and they’re only making 10 units, price unlisted.

This edible tape is here to revise how we wrap our food, minus all the wasted packaging

As much as I enjoy eating, there are certain kinds of food that may taste great but are just too messy to consume. These include thick burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and especially burritos. I mean, I like eating them, but the fact that the ingredients fall off while I’m eating, most of the time on my dress, causes a lot of stress. There must be a way to keep all of it in and prevent them from bursting at the seams, especially if you’re trying to keep your outfit pristine while eating.

Designers: Tyler Guarino, Marie Eric, Rachel Nie, and Erin Walsh

A group of students from the John Hopkins University Engineering department faced this problem when consuming burritos. So they came up with a solution to this problem, bringing a prototype of something called Tastee Tape to help you keep all the ingredients in when consuming a burrito or a wrap. Basically, it’s an adhesive that you can wrap around your food to keep things like beans, rice, vegetables, etc., from dripping onto your clothes. I would have loved to help them test out these different prototypes on all kinds of food as they seemed to enjoy this part of the process.

To come up with this solution, they first studied how different kinds of adhesives work and the science behind it. After that, they looked for how they could make something edible since, of course, you don’t want to put something on food that can be harmful. They came up with something made from food-grade fibrous scaffold and then an edible organic adhesive that can melt in your mouth once you consume it. The result is something edible, safe, and strong enough that can be used on things like burritos, gyros, wraps, tacos, sandwiches, and other similar food.

The students are still in the process of applying for a patent for the Tastee Tape, so we won’t get details yet as to the actual components and “ingredients” that go into this edible tape. But we do get instructions on how to use it. After you tear off a strip from the sheet, you need to wet it completely before applying it to the food that you need to lock into the wrap. It seems to come in clear and blue colors, although the latter doesn’t look aesthetic when put on your food.
