Gustafson Porter + Bowman’s Eiffel Tower Landscape Plan Approved

With a 35% increase in green space, the addition of 200 new trees and the incorporation of pedestrian access across the Iena Bridge, Gustafson Porter + Bowman’s landscape plan for the Eiffel Tower site has now received final approval from the Paris City Council. The verdant, future-forward plan won the 2019 international competition surrounding the two-kilometer area’s redevelopment. “The first phase will transform the roundabout at Trocadero into lawn terraces with fantastic views of the Eiffel Tower, increase the amount of planting around the Varsovie fountain, green the entire Quai Branly and enhance the gardens around the Eiffel Tower,” Mary Bowman explains. A portable lamp you’ll pick from your work desk every time you head for a camping trip

Whether you’re headed to the backcountry for an overnight camp trip or you’re driving your family in an RV; you’ll need a camping lamp like the Conic -that’s easy to use and convenient to carry – if you’re going to live off-grid!

The gap between outdoor flashlights and lanterns is narrowing with transformation in design. This inventive approach has given birth to a new domain i.e., an outdoor lamp, which double duties and makes sure you’re never found wanting while camping or traveling. Conic is an embodiment of such a design, which is a nice transition from the traditional, boring light sources you’ve been accustomed to packing in your backpack.
Designed primarily for use in outdoor activities; the Conic is a helpful extension of a flashlight, which should come in handy to light up the entire camp or make those two-handed tasks easier to carry out. It will be a great help thus while cooking or maybe when playing board games at the camp.

Designer: Han youngseok, Park Jaehyeon

Lanterns have for years been the go-to equipment for the adventurers. The problem with picking the right kind of lantern is that you have to be sure of the size and weight, thus the portability of the lantern. Conic has taken care of the aspect. In its compact, colorful, conical form factor, the lamp has adhered to the portability of a flashlight and the illumination of a lantern.

And that’s not it! It is equally befitting the indoors. So, once you’ve returned home after the long weekend in the wild, you can with even convenience place the Conic on your work desk. A lamp that accompanies you to the camp and back can be turned on and off by rotating the metal ring on the front. This portion is extendable and even detachable to use the lamp with shade for a nice ambiance.

To make it easy for you to carry it where the road takes you; the Conic comes attached to a carabiner, which means you can clip it to your backpack or hang it high up in the camp so it can function as a light bulb, illuminating the entire area. No matter how you feel about the Conic; it can keep your mobile devices charged on the go with its onboard USB-C port, and never feel out of place in everyday usage!

This Real-Time Hologram App Aims to Improve Remote Video Meetings

As an alternative to Zoom or other (empowering yet exhausting) remote video meeting services, the startup Matsuko—a finalist in SXSW Pitch 2022’s Extended Reality & Immersive Technology category—is developing real-time hologram-meeting capabilities. All one needs is an iPhone and the free Matsuko app. “Our brain is wired for the third dimension, and we need a sensation of people physically being there,” Maria Vircikova, cofounder and CEO of Matsuko, has explained. According to Fast Company, Vircikova, an AI researcher, partnered with Matus Kirchmayer, a former programmer on the Assassin’s Creed video game, to start developing Matsuko in 2017. Read more about their secret progress—and how XR goggles may be involved soon—at Fast Company.

PopGrip JumpStart is a power bank and phone grip in one

Did you know that your phone can get tired too? Well, tired is not exactly the correct word but the mobile device you use every day for hours needs to be protected from possible harm and recharged after a long day. But for those times you forget and need to go early in the day, you may just charge it in the car or maybe get this PopGripJumpStart.

Don’t be confused, as this is both a battery bank and a phone grip—a two-in-one accessory that can make your life easier. Its name perfectly describes what it can do— act as a grip for the phone and jumpstart when it needs power. It can charge your smartphone while you scroll through your social media apps, check email, or text.

Designer: PopSockets

PopGrip JumpStart Details

The PopGrip JumpStart offers a secure grip and allows you to hold the phone and use it with just one hand. It lets you have the peace of mind that your phone won’t fall off your hand. You can also use it as a phone stand when you want to watch your favorite shows or movies with other PopSockets accessories.

The PopGrip JumpStart from PopSockets has a 2200mAh battery capacity to charge your phone up to 50% with either a Lightning Cable or a USB-C. You will see the cable popping out when you need to use it. The cord is wired around the battery pack and can be hidden when not in use.

This thing works with a standard PopSocket mount, even with its larger size. The accessory appears to be uncomfortable to hold, but the size is perfect for most phones available today. It’s still compact and slim and is able to boost charging time even when you’re on the go.

This portable power bank is made for the PopSockets platforms. It’s an ideal solution for those always on the go and who are running low on battery. Since the PopGrip JumpStart is compatible with the Popsockets platform, it is easily swappable with different components for unique styling.

PopGrip JumpStart Features

This charging grip is affordable for only $35. It’s already useful as a phone grip, but it becomes more valuable as a battery pack. It may only power up your battery up to half of its capacity, but it’s enough to give you a few more hours of mobile use. Of course, you need to juice up JumpStart’s battery itself, so make sure you don’t forget to charge it.

ALBA Artificial Light helps augment what your body is missing to become healthy

ALBA Artificial Light

The circadian rhythm is a person’s natural way to keep the body clock functioning correctly. Knowing one’s circadian rhythm is vital as it allows you to prepare for changes, whether in the environment or your body. With the help of exposure to light, you can be aware of your body to keep a healthier lifestyle.

Alba is a unique conceptual product design that aims to help people start habits that will help synchronize the body’s natural rhythms with the outside. Unfortunately, we don’t know when the pandemic will be over, so it’s still crucial that we keep our minds and bodies healthy. There are already plenty of solutions and tools that will help you and me begin a more mindful lifestyle.

Designer: Christoph Sokol

The Alba can encourage you to follow routines each day. With the help of artificial light, it can deliver an experience that will augment what the body lacks due to disconnected rhythms. According to the designer of Alba, there is such a thing as “light diet”.

Christoph Sokol designed the Alba to gather real-time data of solar cycles and day length. It is usually different from a person’s busy lifestyle and natural rhythms, but the Alba aims to make changes if there’s a need. Light and the body’s rhythms impact one’s health, so we need all help in improving our well-being.

ALBA Artificial Light Concept

The Alba lamp is ideal for those who live in areas that don’t receive enough sunlight. The light source position can be adjusted depending on your circadian rhythm and the time of day—it’s like having the sun right at home. Alba shows the period in a day in vertical locations and the intensity and hue of the light change as well. For example, during nighttime, the light’s position needs to be lowered to keep the eyes protected from blue light. The effect is those Melanopsin cells are activated at night by the Alba.

ALBA Lighting

The concept design presents the idea that we should live by our natural rhythms instead of the artificial clock time. There will still be many discussions in science about the circadian rhythms and biological clocks, but we love the fact the Alba light will make people more conscious of their bodies. And since this is artificial light, we’ll be more aware of the need to connect with nature more often and start building healthy habits and routines. We’re not sure if this will actually work but yes, we love anything that will remind us we need to take care of our bodies.

The Outbound Collective App Makes Exploring The Outdoors Easy

Tapping locals’ insights, this app empowers all individuals to get back to nature

The phrase “get back to nature” sounds simple in theory but in practice knowing how to explore the outdoors is more complicated than just walking outside. There’s the matter of knowing where to go, whether that means looking for the best ski slopes or a hidden spot with a nice vista. Then there’s the matter of how to get there. A lot of the time, there aren’t exactly clear signs about where trailheads begin or clear warnings when an easy path gives way to a more strenuous one. If you’re a person of color who has historically been excluded from outdoor spaces, then the task of reconnecting with nature can seem even more daunting.

This is something Brian Heifferon and Tyler Drake can attest to. Growing up as half-Asian kids in California, the duo shared a love of surfing, skating and camping when they realized that the people who are considered traditionally “outdoorsy” did not include them. So, in 2012, they co-founded the Outbound Collective, a community-oriented outdoor media platform that shares hikes, lodgings, scenic spots and other tips for outdoor activities by tapping into members’ local insights.

Courtesy of Outbound Collective

“We started the Outbound Collective with the desire to discover adventures nearby,” Drake tells us. “Brian and I both grew up hiking, camping, surfing and trying to get outside as often as possible. As adults living in the Bay Area, we found ourselves asking friends for recs or reading blogs, always in search of information on new trails, beaches, campsites. Whether staying local or traveling somewhere new, we sought one central place where we could find access to this information with insights from people who had been there before.”

We sought one central place where we could find access to this information with insights from people who had been there before

That search led them to create the Outbound app. Like Yelp for the outdoors, this free app (available on the App Store and Google Play) helps users find and filter activities or places around the world using reviews and tips from community members. Alongside insights from locals, the listings come with an overview that notes pertinent information like an activity’s difficulty level and directions on how to get there if it is particularly tricky. After filtering by location, scenery or activity type (like snowboarding, surfing, fishing and more), users can download the GPX routes for offline navigation to ensure getting there is as straightforward as possible. Users can then organize their favorite trails and campsites by saving them on the app.

Perhaps the most arresting feature of the application, however, is its photo-sharing aspect. Upon opening the platform, right away striking, high-resolution photos of landscapes, oceans and water holes fill the feed. The ability to share photos to the app makes Outbound more than just a tool for navigating nature; it is a source of empowerment.

“Having this resource available not only helps inspire people to get outside,” continues Drake, “but with reviews, GPX tracks and driving directions, it helps empower them to do so confidently.” Connecting people to the outdoors and each other, the Outbound app encourages individuals of any and all backgrounds to discover the beauty that nature has to offer.

Detailed Photo Book for Restorers of Midcentury Modern Chairs

Japanese chair researcher Takaaki Nishikawa and woodworker/designer Shigeru Sakamoto co-authored a photo-heavy $38 book called “Anatomical Views of Masterpiece Chairs.”

Designed for those seeking to restore or repair midcentury modern classics, the book is filled with detailed photographs of teardowns, reassemblies and seat replacements. Bruno Mattson’s Eva chair, Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair, Kaare Klint’s Safari chair and others by the likes of Gio Ponti, Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and others are covered.

While the book is aimed at restorers, I have to think it would benefit designers to read as well. The description says the book contains information on (translated) “What kind of technology is used: joining methods, how to provide strength, ingenuity to make the best use of design, ingenuity in hidden parts that cannot be seen from the outside, etc.”

It appears the book is in Japanese only.

Here’s a flip-through:

Chagaccino

Made with wild-foraged Chaga mushrooms, Drink Renude’s Chagaccino is a vegan, sugar-free, gluten-free, keto friendly latte-style drink mix providing a little buzz (and plenty of antioxidants) without any caffeine jitters. Organic Peruvian cacao, organic Ceylon cinnamon and a touch of monk fruit sweetener boost the flavor. Just mix with hot or cold water—or the milk, coffee or tea of your choice—to change up your drink routine. Each packet in the 10-pack box includes 750mg of Chaga.

WAVE UV-C Sanitizing Tool eliminates unwanted germs, viruses, and bacteria

Wave Portable UV-C Germicidal Sanitizing Device How to Use

The coronavirus has definitely left a mark on our lives. Everyday life is never the same again and we have seen that rapidly change the past couple of years. The pandemic is not yet over, but many people in some countries have started to embrace living in the New Normal.

Some are also chanting it should be “Better Normal” now because things are seemingly getting better, at least, in some parts of the world. But for those who are still trying to overcome their anxieties and fears of going out, we won’t stop you from doing all the things you need to do to give you peace of mind.

Designers: Ivan Vecchia and Giorgio Mastropasqua for UV-C LABS

Wave Portable UV-C European Product Design Award

If you still can’t live without an alcohol sprayer in your hand, it’s fine. If you are the type of person that sprays Lysol on every surface or package, it’s okay. If you have a UV box at home to put your stuff in when you get home, that’s still acceptable. No one is stopping you from making sure you and your things are clean and disinfected, but there are ways to make your life easier.

The Wave is an innovative germicidal sanitizing device that uses UV-C to ensure bacteria, viruses, and germs are killed before you touch a surface. This is a portable solution that easily sticks to the rear of your smartphone. What makes this different from other UV wands is that it works using a mobile app. The app guides you through the process of sanitation, so an area is thoroughly cleaned in less than a minute.

Wave Portable UV-C Sanitizing Wand

This compact tool is only 5mm thick but is capable enough to destroy germs on the surface you often touch, like the keyboard, doorknob, chair, or elevator buttons. This is another effective way to fight the pandemic, although we are unsure how many people will bother to do this. Well, having the Wave on the back of your phone is more effortless. It makes UV-C readily available and guarantees you always have it because you rarely forget your phone.

Wave by UV-C Labs is said to be the first UV-C light for your phone. The Wave, designed by Italian industrial designers Ivan Vecchia and Giorgio Mastropasqua, has been recognized and given the Gold Award of the European Product Design Award. Specifically, the category is Design for Society.

Wave Portable UV-C Germicidal Sanitizing Wand

It takes advantage of a technology that has been proven to eliminate 99.8% of bacteria and viruses. A simple touch of a button will sanitize any surface. The app will tell you how to do the sanitization properly, like proper distance and correct amount of time. Having an app will make it easier for you to sanitize a surface or item because it tells you what to do.

Wave Portable UV-C Germicidal Sanitizing Tool

The process is simple: Click, Scan, and Sanitize. The ultra-thin and stylish UV wand connects via Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity to your smartphone. It has a child lock so kids can’t use it during those unintentional power-ons. It’s non-invasive and safe, but you still need to be careful around kids. It can be used up to 100 times on a single full charge. Battery life can be longer because the device shuts off automatically after two minutes of inactivity. Choose from either the black or white model of the $79 compact UV-C sanitizing tool.
