Sleek USB Hub + Hard Drive hybrid gadget means less baggage with double the utility!

How often do you find yourself carrying around an external HHD and USB Hub to never be short of storage space or modern-day ports? If that’s the case, the hard drive plus USB Hub combo in one is the ideal accessory to own!

Designers and creative professionals in all fields have external hard drives or USB drives handy in their arsenal. Normally, external hard disks are intended for one purpose only – to transfer and retrieve important data. On the other end of the spectrum, USB hubs are also an important accessory that professionals and digital artists always keep in their package. More so in an age where slim laptops are being preferred for their portability and compactness, but have a stark disadvantage. They have fewer USB ports (in most cases only two), so connecting a hard drive, leaves just one USB drive for use – that’s if you’ve not connected a dongle for wireless mouse and/or keyboard combo!

This is one thing that most of us would like to be taken care of, but how? In the form of a hard drive and USB hub combo which means you have one less gadget to carry while sufficing the utility of two. Industrial designer Cheon Ryong Choi has the simplest and smart solution to this in the form of the Save USB SSD Hub. The hybrid accessory slots in most M.2 SSD in the given slot while leaving enough room for a USB hub with USB-C-type, MagSafe connecter and two USB ports. That’s enough meat to satiate geeky users’ requirements for a port-starved laptop.

Drawing inspiration presumably from the design philosophy of Nothing, the hybrid hard drive gets a transparent back panel that exposes all the hardware components which personally I find too cool. On the front, there are options to choose from a plethora of upmarket color options including – blue, sea green, beige, black and white. To ensure the M.2 SSD doesn’t heat up with constant usage, the Save USB SSD Hub gets a fan on top of the drive slotting section.

This tiny black cabin is built from felled oak trees acquired from a home’s construction waste!

Studio Padron designed and built a tiny cabin entirely from mature felled oak trees acquired from another home’s construction waste.

As the old saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” When it comes to home construction, waste produced during the building process opens the door for more opportunities. While many home builders and architects plan homes around the site’s preexisting trees and landscape, sometimes felling trees can’t be avoided. After finishing work on a new home, Studio Padron, a US-based architecture firm, utilized the felled trees collected during the home’s construction and built a tiny black cabin to function as the home’s standalone library.

Calling the bookworm’s oasis Hemmelig Room, or ‘secret room’ in Norwegian, Studio Padron built the entire tiny cabin from disused mature oak trees that were felled during the main home’s construction. From the outside, Hemmelig Room finds a geometric structure clad in blackened timber. Following the main home’s construction process, the felled oak trees were cut into large, rectangular log sections that were left to dry over several years before building Hemmelig Room.

Inside, the blackened timber reveals the oak tree’s raw, polished form. From top to bottom, Studio Padron outfitted Hemmelig Room’s interior in nonuniform timber panels that merge with cavities to create bookshelves. Besides that, floor-to-ceiling windows bring the quiet space closer to the outdoor landscape. Equipped with a wood-burning stove to keep the space warm year-round, guests can enjoy enough space for a bed, armchair, and writing desk.

Cozy bedrooms designed to inspire you with the best interior design ideas

The most important and sacred space in our home is our bedroom! It’s our happy place, a space where we can simply sprawl on our bed and de-stress after a long day of adulting. My bedroom is quite honestly my favorite place and my ultimate safe haven. However, in our modern urban homes, with their limited amount of space, it can be a task to do up our bedroom exactly the way we want to! But that doesn’t mean we do not try. Here’s a collection of inspiring and gorgeous bedroom designs that will surely prove to be major interior goals for you! These comforting and minimal bedroom designs will get you motivated to give your bedroom the makeover it truly deserves. Enjoy!

Designed by Reza Mohtashami, this bedroom at Skypoint Villa features an all-black aesthetics with dark wooden flooring to complement it. The open room is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, and a skylight instead of a typical ceiling, giving you beautiful views all over. It’s the perfect master bedroom to relax and unwind in.

Every bedroom deserves its privacy, after all, it is the place where you can let yourself be. Vasyl Ambroziak’s bedroom visualization gives you this privacy but without the boring walls! Using a glass wall to partition between the bedroom and the raw concrete exterior wall, Vasyl adds an explosion of green in place of a boring old wallpaper. In fact, as the plants change with the season, you get a unique backdrop and of course the calmness of being surrounded by such a green space.

Designed by Ann Mar, this minimal bedroom is probably one of the most peaceful and quaint bedrooms I’ve ever come across. The bed is almost sunken into a hollow space on the floor, giving the impression that it is floating! One of the walls is almost entirely replaced by a window, providing an unparalleled view that is a rarity to find nowadays!

This glass-enclosed bedroom at the Eco House Merisi in Adjara, Georgia has breathtaking views of mountains clad in snow! It is the coziest little bedroom ever. You can literally take a nap amongst the mountains in here!

Designed by Anna Kireeva, this bedroom in a house called ‘In The Woods’, is truly placed right in the middle of a forest! A floating bed is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, that provide access to the woods around it, creating a space that is the true definition of indoor-outdoor living.

This bedroom in The Butterfly House is rustic, raw, and real. An organic wooden theme follows the entire room, with a little wooden swing chair outside the window, adding an outdoorsy element. The rustic floor and ceiling perfectly complement the desert in which the home is located.

Designed by Charlotte Taylor and Nicholas Préaud, this beautiful bedroom in Casa Atibaia in São Paulo is a prime specimen of Brazilian modernism. It’s a warm and open space highlighted by stonework, plants, and soft subtle colors. It attempts to be a living space that co-exists with nature, rather than encroaching upon it.

Using wooden paneling to create a geometric contrast, this interior design by Max Shpak, Roman Kravchenko, Vladyslav Hreben, Alexander Lukyanenko, and Lena Sever’s Berlin House is a bright airy space without being overly feminine.

A high vaulted ceiling, a wooden pedestal that stretches up to the ceiling in an unbroken line, and the subtle light underneath the bed – this bedroom interior by Taras Kaminskiy & Veronika Mulieieva named Urban Jungle has tranquility. The light under the bed makes the bed almost levitate, inducing a calming effect the moment you step into this room, draining away all your worries.

Andrea West rekindles our love for accent walls with this dark accent wall that actually helps to highlight the bed with its blond headboard!

Successfully Crowdfunded Product Designs of 2021

As a product designer, you’re probably fascinated by successful crowdfunding campaigns–because whether or not the vendors actually deliver the product, the campaigns are a barometer of current consumer tastes and desires. These can often be surprising. There’s bound to be several items on this list that make you go, “Whoa, they clocked how much?

Sometimes the crowdfunded inventions are an improved version of an existing object. Other times it’s an entirely new object. Sometimes they’re tools that help you make things, other times they’re meant to improve the UX of some chore. A lot of the successful campaigns target a subculture that the market is not adequately serving.

If you look over this list of what crowdfunding campaigns did well this year, I hope it will encourage you to come up with your own ideas and consider crowdfunding them in 2022. Ask yourself if you could have pulled off any of these ideas below yourself—or done better!

NJF Design creates thatched resort surrounded by dunes in Mozambique

Kisawa Sanctuary by NJF Design

Thatched beachfront bungalows overlook the Indian Ocean from this hotel named Kisawa Sanctuary in Mozambique, which was built in tandem with a marine conservation centre.

The Kisawa Sanctuary occupies 300 hectares of forest, dunes and beachfront on the southern tip of Benguerra Island, which lies 14 kilometres from the Mozambique mainland.

It is the first hospitality project created by entrepreneur Nina Flohr, whose studio NJF Design collaborated with skilled local weavers, thatchers and carpenters to realise the project.

Opened in November 2021, the hotel comprises 22 suites in 12 thatch-topped villas arranged within the dunes.

“Some lie on the calmer cove side, others shelter in the dunes on the ocean side, yet all are carefully positioned within their own secluded plot; providing maximum privacy and optimum appreciation of the natural environment,” said the hotel’s team.

Built without the use of heavy machinery, the wooden structures across the site are thatched and clad in a variety of styles based on the regional vernacular.

Guest bungalows are shaped like long villas and covered with wavy patterned roofs, echoing the form of waves.

Inside they have mottled plaster walls and wooden floors covered with large rugs. Colourfully printed textiles add warmth and variety to the neutral decor.

Locally made contemporary furnishings are mixed with crafts and artefacts from across Africa to lend an authentic feel to the interiors.

The communal dining spaces across the resort have a similar design treatment, and serve traditional cuisine made from fresh seafood and produce, with a zero-waste policy and using no processed ingredients.

Alongside the hotel, Flohr also launched the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies – a research hub for ocean conservation.

“Their parallel operations create a new, symbiotic business model whereby for-profit hospitality contributes directly to non-profit marine science and research,” said the team.

Resort guests are able to participate in the research efforts through activities like excursions on the research vessel, which is used for tagging and monitoring local shark populations.

“The pairing of cultural celebration and environmental conservation at Kisawa presents a new, forward-looking narrative for both Mozambique and island escapes,” the team said

Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair postponed to September 2022

Snarkitecture creates labyrinth-like stand for Bolon at Stockholm Furniture Fair

Organisers of the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair have announced the event will be pushed back from its scheduled date in February due to coronavirus for a second consecutive year.

The design show, which is the largest of its kind in northern Europe and attracts exhibitors from across the world, was scheduled to take place from 8 to 12 February 2022 but has been rescheduled for 6 to 9 September 2022.

The date move is temporary and will not affect the furniture fair’s sister event, Stockholm Design Week, which is set to run as normal from 7 to 13 February.

Move necessary given “current situation in the world”

Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair and Stockholm Design Week project area manager Hanna Nova Beatrice said the postponement was necessary given the current state of the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen rapidly rising case rates and corresponding protective measures in many countries.

“We are an international fair with exhibitors and visitors travelling here from all over the world, including our neighbouring Scandinavian countries,” said Beatrice.

“We have great interest and engagement for the 2022 edition of the fair, but we need to move it forward due to the current situation in the world.”

Event organisers said they chose the new date to avoid clashes with other design fairs and activities, and because it would allow continued access to the usual venue of Stockholmsmässan.

“By moving Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair forward to September we hope to give more people an opportunity to participate, including those based in countries that now have a lockdown,” said Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair and Stockholm Design Week product and concept owner Sanna Gebeyehu.

“After a two-year break, it feels important to welcome as many exhibitors and visitors as possible in 2022.”

Design Week to go ahead

While the furniture fair will move to September, Stockholm Design Week is scheduled to go ahead as planned on 7 to 13 February.

This is because the festival is more focused on local exhibitors and audiences, and its events will not be prevented by Sweden’s current coronavirus restrictions.

“Many of the planned exhibits and activities during Stockholm Design Week can still be carried out and therefore it still feels relevant to go ahead with the design week in the city,” Beatrice said. “But of course, we follow the prevailing restrictions.”

Stockholm Design & Architecture Talks will also continue as planned and will be aired digitally. This year, they will revolve around the theme Being a Game Changer.

Stockholm one of first 2022 design events cancelled

Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair is one of the earliest events in the design calendar, and is therefore one of the first to announce its postponement due to the global surge in coronavirus cases driven by the new omicron variant.

Furniture and interiors fair IMM Cologne is another that has had its date changed, with organisers recently announcing the cancellation of the January 2022 event.

At this stage, Maison&Objet is still going ahead in Paris from 18 to 22 January and Oslo Design Fair remains scheduled for 26 to 28 January.

The photography shows Snarkitecture’s labyrinth-like stand for Bolon at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair in 2020.

Stockholm Design Week will run from 7 to 13 February in Stockholm and Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair will take place on 6 to 9 September 2022 in Stockholm. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.

Move over Cybertruck – Thundertruck with bat wing solar awnings is the Batmobile avatar for all off-road adventures

The ultra-futuristic EV seems like an evolved Batmobile RC toy car transformed magically into the real-world scaled-up version. Thundertruck takes things to the next level with its roof-mounted bat wing solar awning which adds to the battery power reserve and acts as potent shade in extreme heat when parked for camping, fishing, or BBQing.

All automotive fanatics are waiting for the Cybertruck to finally roll out of the production lines and on the roads. While that has been pushed back to sometime in 2022, the next generation multi-utility truck with the performance of a sports car is still seeming like a distant dream. This is the perfect opportunity for an electric MUV to give the vision of the ultimate performance truck-wide wings. Thundertruck is the perfect example of that, as it is designed for individuals who preferer living and driving outside the proverbial lines!

Designed by Wolfgang IP, the sharp-looking multi-purpose EV takes on the current automotive design principles to bring superior on and off-road performance to the fore. According to them, Thundertruck is crafted for the outdoor enthusiasts and young crowd who don’t like living within the boundaries and following the herd. The extra edgy truck (so sharp even the Cybertruck seems blunt) is inspired by the Australian Outback and honed by state-of-the-art technology adapting to any terrain and adventure coming its way. It goes from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds flat, boasting its high-performance electric motor capabilities. The advanced driver assistance systems ensure safety on dangerous trails as the scope of driving errors is always there.

The spacious cargo bed can be accessed via steps and extendable loading ramps enable loading of 2 or 4 wheel bikes. The integrated camping tent expands over the main tray, and it raises by PV trunk lid cover. There’s even a multi-purpose pull-out side draw storage unit with a slide-out kitchen or refrigerator. A matching drone flies off the roof of the vehicle to perform scouting or reiki to gauge the condition of roads ahead in unknown territory. What more can you ask from a swanky-looking MUV like this one?

Even better, the 180 kWh battery-equipped 4×4 (800 HP) can be converted into a 210 kWh battery-powered 6×6 (940 HP) multi-purpose EV monster honing a combined driving range of 560 miles and additional 2WD traction. Both the normal and 6×6 versions have massive ground clearance of 14.5 inches, an approach angle of 48 degrees, and a departure angle of 82 degrees. There’s no word yet when this truck in pure matte black will set the roads on fire, but if does anytime next year, Tesla will have a major headache on their hands!

Top 10 AirPods Accessories of 2021

My AirPods are one of my prized Apple possessions! I use them multiple times in a day, whether’s it’s for calls, to watch videos during work breaks, or to listen to some pumped-up tunes during my evening jogs. You’ll find them around me almost all the time. I’m sure there are other AirPods addicts in the house, and for those individuals, here’s a collection of AirPods accessories that we swear by! From a sleek AirPods Max charger that doubles up as a magnetic stand to an AirPods Pro case shaped like a camera – these nifty product designs will completely elevate and enhance your AirPods experience. They serve as the perfect sidekick to your AirPods, either by taking the best care of them, boosting their functionality, or making sure you never lose them again. These are a must-have for all AirPods fanatics!

1. Power1

Power1 takes portability and functionality to a new level giving you a system that’s doubly useful because it doesn’t just charge and protect for your iPhone… it charges and protects your Airpods too and ensures they are always with you and ready for use. Designed as an evolution of traditional battery cases, Power1 not only holds an extra battery but also manages your Airpods like no other system. Armed with a proprietary design, Power1 comes with two modes. One, where it charges your Airpods only (up to 30 times on a full battery), and a second mode that charges your Airpods as well as your phone, giving both gadgets full advantage of Power1’s 3000mAh internal battery. Power1 uses its intelligent power monitoring system to see which device is running low on charge, supplying power to them accordingly. Using its USB-C port, when you plug Power1 into an outlet, its priority charging feature kicks in, routing power to your phone and Airpods first before charging its own internal battery.

2. The Max Stand

The Max Stand has a simplistic elegance that you’d almost expect from Apple before you realize that Apple’s solution for storing the headphones when not in use is a weird handbag-esque object that most people wouldn’t really want to carry around on display. The Max Stand, on the other hand, is simple, nondescript, and highlights the product it’s charging – making the AirPods Max look like an ornament on your desk that you can easily pick up and wear when you need it.

3. The Snapshot Case

Elago Snapshot Apple AirPods Case with AirTag

The Snapshot case for the AirPods Pro comes with a camera-shaped design that neatly houses an AirTag inside the faux camera lens. Aside from looking like a tiny little point-and-shoot, the Snapshot protects your AirPods Pro from physical damage as well as theft. The all-silicone design helps absorb shock, while still enabling wireless charging… and the fact that you’ve now got an AirTag strapped to your AirPods Pro makes it really easy to use the Find My feature to track the exact location of your earphones.

4. The Chargepuck

The Chargepuck acts as a replacement for the wireless charging dock or mat you’ve probably got lying on your desk or somewhere at your bedside. Instead of being a static device that sits plugged into an outlet forever, the little puck sits attached to your iPhone and comes with its own retractable cable that lets you plug it in anywhere. The Chargepuck isn’t a battery pack (it doesn’t have its own battery inside it), but rather, it’s a charging apparatus that sits attached to your phone and lets you charge three devices at the same time.

5. Antón’s redesigned AirPods Pro Case

Antón’s redesign turns the Apple AirPods Pro case from something that looks like a ‘box of floss’ to a really classy-looking ‘chewing-gum-stick dispenser’. The rounded-box shape gets ditched for a taller and sleeker capsule shape, with lids on both ends, allowing individual earpieces to fit into each end of the case. Sure, the redesign presents some structural issues – like where would one place the Qi charging coil or the battery, but what Antón’s concept really provides is a sense of variety, while sticking to Apple’s design philosophy of building sleek products. The redesigned AirPods Pro case also fundamentally changes the UX of the AirPods. The two separate openings house the left and right earphones, and while they do that, they also hint at behavior that’s common within the AirPods user community of using just one AirPod at a time to maximize battery life.

6. The Air Omni

The Air Omni’s biggest defining feature is that it comes built to dock the iPad too, which should honestly be given the same status as the iPhone, Watch, and AirPods… after all, the iPad is a mobile device too. Designed for not just charging but docking too, the Air Omni comes with a dedicated pop-up wireless charging hub for your Watch, specified wireless charging zones for your phone and AirPods, and a stand that lets you dock the iPad vertically and charge it via a cable – all while complying with Apple’s MFi charging standards. The docking zone’s unique design is truly innovative as it shapeshifts to let you alternate between docking your iPad as well as your iPhone.

7. iPhone 13 Pro-esque triple camera module

This idea presents a flip iPhone with iPhone 13 Pro-esque triple camera module comprising an 8K capable pro-action camera. The flipping device has a curved touchscreen Retina display and the discussed camera module on the outside – split over the two halves separated by a durable hinge. The cute box-like design – when it’s folded – actually hides a pair of newly designed AirPods Pro mini in a cozy housing for each earbud.

8. The Genki Audio Lite

Designed as a sleeker upgrade to Genki’s Bluetooth adapter from 2018, the Genki Audio Lite is a tiny, plug-and-play Bluetooth module that fits right into your Nintendo Switch Lite, allowing you to connect Bluetooth earphones and speakers to your gaming console. The Genki Audio Lite’s tiny size adds a great deal of functionality to the already capable device. You can now use your TWS earphones, AirPods, or even the AirPods Max with it, allowing for a portable, private gaming session. The Genki Audio Lite comes with Bluetooth 5.0 and is equipped with aptX™ high fidelity low latency codecs that provide lag-free audio while you game.

9. Zens’ Magnetic Dual Powerbank

Zens’ Magnetic Dual Powerbank comes with an internal 4,000 mAh battery that’s good for 1.5 full smartphone charges. The power bank is MagSafe compatible on one side too, allowing you to easily snap your iPhone to it without worrying about alignment. The other non-magnetic side is good for your AirPods, or potentially even a second smartphone (if you’re that kind of person). The power bank is perfect for all your on-the-go charging needs, although it comes with its own flip-out kickstand for when you’re working at a desk and want your phone angled towards you.

10. AirFly Pro

Twelve South has come up with their AirFly Pro. A wireless headphone adaptor, AirFly Pro is “the missing link between wireless headphones and wired headphone jacks.” It lets you connect your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or wireless headphones of any brand to devices (lacking Bluetooth connectivity) with a 3.5mm headphone jack. The dongle allows two people to listen to music or watch a movie, making it a splitter! You can finally share/watch things wirelessly with your friends if you’ll share the same taste in entertainment that is. The AirFly Pro also connects with the Nintendo Switch, enabling you to listen to the audio using your favorite wireless headphones while playing your favorite game!
