This Porsche 911 concept uses nature-inspired design to look menacing

Nature is filled with billions of inspiration sources, from form design to CMF, from natural characteristics to animal behavior. Pick up the right source of inspiration and you can piggy-back on millennia of evolution that has given a particular animal a trait of dominance. In fact, there’s a beautiful video from VOX that explains how nature acts as a designer’s biggest and most valuable encyclopedia.

Companies like Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mustang, and Porsche make the famous use of dominating animals in their logos, but this Porsche 911 concept’s design takes things a bit further by being directly inspired by an animal. The Porsche 911 Bullfrog by Alexander Prime borrows from one of the largest, most dominating animals in the frog family. In fact, look carefully and its black front literally looks like a frog’s face.

Designed as a prototype for the Le Mans 24 hour race, and to celebrate Porsche’s stunning record of being present at every Le Mans race ever held and dominating most of them, the 911 Bullfrog captures the essence of the brand while still retaining the ability to look muscular and menacing. “With its oval headlights, the new generation continued to reflect the traditional 911 design. The new 911 is the sum of its predecessors: The silhouette: iconic. The design: timeless. The technology: inspired by great racing victories”, says Alexander, the designer behind the 911 Bullfrog concept.

Excess Heat From the London Underground Used to Warm Nearby Homes

A red, metal-clad building—the Bunhill 2 Energy Centre—in London’s Islington marks the center of Europe’s newest type of energy network. The building itself (by Cullinan Studio) acts as the central provider for heat and hot water for hundreds of homes and public offices within its proximity. A fan situated below ground, but above the Underground redirects heat from the Northern Line tunnel (which would otherwise escape or dissipate) and uses it to heat water that’s then funneled to consumers. Not only does this system drastically reduce carbon emissions, but it’s also an energy source founded upon resourcefulness and pragmatism. Read more at Dezeen.

Melania Trump unveils classical Tennis Pavilion at the White House

First lady of the United States Melania Trump has revealed that a tennis pavilion, which takes cues from the neoclassical style of the The White House, is being built on the grounds of the presidential residence.

Melania Trump, whose husband Donald Trump is US president, revealed on Twitter that construction of the tennis pavilion is underway. The building appears to have been designed in house by the National Park Service (NPS).

“I am excited to share the progress of the Tennis Pavillion [Sic] at @WhiteHouse,” she tweeted alongside images of her on site. “Thank you to the talented team for their hard work and dedication.”

The project will replace an existing building to the west of the tennis courts

The structure will replace a building that currently houses restrooms and storage space near to the tennis courts on the grounds, which covers over 18 acres (7.3 hectares).

The pavilion’s design is “heavily influenced by the White House architecture”, according to a report the NPS created for the final review of the project last year. Taking cues from the neoclassical building, which was completed in 1800, the pavilion will be fronted with columns and large arched windows.

“It will use the design of the White House as inspiration and incorporate architectural elements such as a colonnade, large floor-to-ceiling windows and fanlight windows in the facades,” NPS added.

Other details include white limestone cladding and a copper roof were also chosen to match The White House style.

President Trump, Melania Trump’s husband, expressed his love for classical architecture earlier this year in a proposed draft order that would require all new federal buildings to be built in the style.

According to the NPS document, Melania Trump’s Tennis Pavilion is intended to provide a more unified connection between two other building projects on site that were designed by previous first ladies.

These include the Kitchen Garden vegetable allotment led by Michelle Obama and the Children’s Garden playspace completed by Lady Bird Johnson in 1968.

It is also the first in part of two-stage project to transform the site, located in the south of the garden. The second phase is intended to replace the neighbouring NPS Maintenance Building called the Pony Shed.

Tennis Pavilion isn’t Melania’s first foray into architecture and design. She started an undergraduate degree in architecture at the University of Ljubljana but left the course after her first year to pursue modelling in Milan.

This background came to light after it emerged she falsely stated she had a degree in architecture on her website and was forced to take the site down.

In 2018, it was reported that she also designed a “clean-lined” logo to front her Be Best initiative.

Carbonator II Black Chrome

For carbonating water at home, Aarke’s compact Carbonator II does the job in the most quality packaging option on the market, now available in a black chrome finish. The use of stainless steel instead of plastic sets the countertop device apart from competitors, promising a longer lifespan and delivering a more eye-pleasing look. With its lever-operated function, it’s also easier to use.

Natalia Lafourcade: La Malquerida

Dedicated to “all our sisters,” Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade’s acoustic rendition of “La Malquerida” spotlights the love and pain women feel. Its title roughly translates to “the badly loved,” but its mission is empowerment. Lafourcade sings alone, at first, strumming a guitar next to a fire, but a choir of young women chime in when the track reaches its chorus. Together, they create an emotionally impactful collective—one that is delicate, powerful, and transcends language.

Through The Lens Of Photographer Christopher Barraja

Lunar Vacation: Unlucky

Atlanta-based, four-piece “pool rock” band Lunar Vacation returns with “Unlucky,” a beautiful, self-reflective single. It’s Lunar Vacation’s first release since 2018’s Artificial Flavors EP and features production from Daniel Gleason of Grouplove. Lead singer Grace Repasky sails upon the song’s relaxed melody and anchors honesty to the lyricism.

This steam cooker combines smart, sophisticated technology with healthy cooking

Steam may just seem like hot air to you (if you get the wordplay, you get the wordplay), but the gaseous form of water has literally changed our lives. Whether it’s steam-powered engines which still help parts of the world get from A to B, or the same steam you use to cleanse yourself in saunas, or even the very steam you use to cook dumplings, it’s a pretty useful state of water. STEAMIE harnesses that usefulness and creates a revolution in cooking and healthy eating, dressed in a beautiful design.

STEAMIE, designed and developed by award-winning Mindsailors Design Studio, reintroduces steam into mainstream cooking. Steam has a way of cooking food without diluting its flavor, giving you healthy food that’s rich in nutrients as well as packed with great taste. The tabletop appliance uses this power to help prepare food that’s both nutritious and tasty. The layered appliance houses a water bath below, and food (be it veggies or meat) placed in perforated trays above. STEAMIE then uses a unique turbo convection method to rapidly steam-cook the food. These pressurized jets of steam measure 125°C and instantly close external pores of meat, vegetables or seafood, locking the flavor within, while the heat from the steam helps cook the food. The fact that the food isn’t immersed in water (like with boiling) helps keep the food from tasting watery or ‘wet’.

STEAMIE was created by Mindsailors, a Europe-based holistic design studio that designed and engineered the appliance around the technology developed by STEAMIE Ltd. The appliance comes with its own in-built scale that helps you measure your food before you cook it, and even has a bamboo-wood lid that doubles up as a cutting board for food-prep. A frosted-acrylic food bowl helps you watch your meal be prepared, while an intuitive display on the front allows you to input and check preparation times, giving you unprecedented control over your food prep. STEAMIE ultimately brings healthy steam-based cooking back into the limelight, by making the process much more sophisticated and giving the user the kind of precise control and modernity they’d expect from an oven. The product’s usage of matte black and bamboo wood lends a certain bit of contemporary appeal to the kitchen too!

STEAMIE is but one of Mindsailors’ many design projects. The 4-time iF Design Award-winning studio has worked with clients across fields ranging from appliance and technology to even medical design and transportation design. With 14 years of experience, the design and engineering studio has seen as many as 160 projects till their execution. You can check out more of their work by visiting their website below.

STEAMIE – Modern Steam Cooking Device

STEAMIE is a new generation of steam cooking devices that uses steam to prepare meals. However, unlike other steamers out there, STEAMIE comes with innovative STEAM-UP technology, which significantly speeds up the time of food processing.

STEAMIE provides a more aromatic and rich in natural flavors dish. This is due to the use of unique turbo convection that causes rapid and consistent operation of superheated steam at elevated pressure. Combined with the very high temperature (around 107°C), the steam acts with great momentum on the food contained inside. This immediately closes the external pores of meat, vegetables or shrimps, thanks to which the taste of the ingredients are better preserved.

STEAMIE Details

The main goal established within this project was to create a new market segment for steam cooking devices, where the device won’t have to look unattractive.

STEAMIE can be used anywhere, even in the most exquisite restaurants, where speed and quality are crucial.

Logitech Reveals New Wireless Chargers

Today Logitech announced their new POWERED family of wireless chargers, the largest of which can apparently do what Apple couldn’t get their canceled AirPower charger to do: Charge three devices at once (an iPhone, AirPods and an Apple Watch) without overheating.

While it can be said that form follows function here, I put these in the category of objects that will puzzle archaeologists when they dig these up in a thousand years:

The objects make more sense when populated with their charges, so to speak:

Logitech says they’ll safely charge both Apple and Samsung devices at 7.5W and 9W, respectively.

The 3-in-1 unit runs $130, the stand-up phone charger is $60 and the flat pad is $40. However, would-be buyers should note that these are meant to plug into your wall, not your Macbook; the connectors are proprietary, not USB-C nor Micro USB.

Check ’em out here.
