Muggo Keeps your Perfect Brew at its Perfect Temperature

Believe it or not, coffee has an ideal drinking temperature. It isn’t a fixed unit, but for most people, just a 5° deviation in their coffee’s temperature can be the difference between liquid gold, and an undrinkable gruel. Integrating the ability to carry your coffee around with the ability to keep it exactly at the temperature you desire, the Muggo comes with its own heating unit, battery pack, and a display system that makes it much more advanced than your regular to-go coffee cup.

The idea with coffee (or any beverage, if you think about it) is that the tools exist to make sure that the taste is calibrated exactly to your liking. You can choose your own beans, decide how much they need to roast, grind them to the exact fineness, and even decide brew-time. The Muggo extends that control by allowing you to also decide what temperature you want to consume your coffee at. Available in a black avatar with stainless steel construction, the Muggo allows you to set the temperature you want your drink at (right to the degree). The self-heating cup comes with a construction that makes it easy to carry around. It fits in the palm of your hand, and into traditional cup-holders, and comes with a detachable battery unit that snaps to its base, giving you the power to heat on the go.

The Muggo also features a coaster which not only prevents careless coffee-rings on your desk, but also acts as a power-dock for your Muggo. With two slots, you can not only supply power to your self-heating mug right at your desk, but you can even use the free slot to charge Muggo’s battery pack, that conveniently snaps on using powerful neodymium magnets when you’re ready to make a move, so you can have the perfectly hot mug of coffee, tea, or milk quite literally anywhere.

Minimalist Perspectives of Dubai’s Iconic Architecture

Geometry and Colour Collide in these Delightful Plant Compositions

A Sliding, Spinning Refrigerator Tray for Easy Access

It was once common for the fronts of refrigerators to end level with the fronts of the countertops in the kitchen, but lately the trend is to make refrigerators ever deeper. This added storage space makes it difficult to access things towards the rear. The designers of German appliance maker AEG have addressed this with their nifty 360° Swivel Tray:

It’s available in their MultiSpace model, which is currently European-market only. We Americans will have to continue rooting around to find those leftovers before they expire.

Can Volvo's 360c Electric, Autonomous Concept Car Replace First-Class Air Travel?

Most electric concept cars address environmental and sustainability issues. Autonomous concept cars speak of a future where transportation is a service. And with their new 360c electric, autonomous concept car, Volvo goes a bit further to ask: What impact will such cars have on us as individuals? Might they influence our choices in terms of what jobs to take or where to live?

Where would you live if you could commute each workday in an autonomous driving, fully-functional, connected, comfortable, mobile office space? What if the service was provided via an on demand subscription basis? Or what if it was provided by one employer yet not another – which company would you work for?

The concept environments reflect the potential for change in the fundamental structure of how people live, by transforming unproductive or boring travel time into useful and enjoyable minutes or hours on the road.

…Fully autonomous and electric travel…opens up possibilities for more residential freedom, reduced pressure on real estate pricing and more affordable home ownership.

“People becoming less reliant on proximity to cities is just one example of the impact of removing the burden of unproductive travel time,” said Mårten Levenstam, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Volvo Cars. “The 360c driving office makes it viable for people to live at greater distances from crowded cities and use their time both in a more pleasant and more effective way.”

The concept presents four potential uses of autonomous driving vehicles – a sleeping environment, mobile office, living room and entertainment space – representing an attractive travel option that could rival air, bus and train providers, but with competitive advantages in comfort, convenience and privacy.

[The 360c has] potential as a lucrative competitor to short-haul air travel, a multi-billion dollar industry comprising airlines, aircraft makers and other service providers. The 360c sleeping environment enables first-class private cabin travel from door to door, without the inconvenience of airport security, queuing, noisy and cramped airliners.

I’ve done a fair amount of surface travel in my time, and I will say two of the best overland journeys I’ve ever taken were an overnight bus from Tokyo to Kyoto, and a sleeper car in a cross-country Amtrak. To fall asleep in one city or state and wake up refreshed in another, without you having had to drink coffee and drive all night, or deal with the hell of air travel, is a pretty magical sensation. If Volvo’s vision of the autonomous-car future is the one we’re going to wind up with, I look forward to it.

Construction of golden cube building by Stefano Boeri Architetti begins in Tirana

Blloku Cube – a mixed-use block with a facade of aluminium triangles, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti – is now under construction in the Albanian capital.

The seven-storey building is set to boast an intricate facade made up of three-dimensional aluminium triangles, which will act as a sunscreen to shade its glazed walls.

Blloku Cube by Stefano Boeri Architetti

Blloku Cube takes its name from its form, and the central Tirana neighbourhood that it is located in.

It is roughly the shape of a cube, with a square ground floor plan measuring approximately 30 metres by 30 metres. The lower two floors of the 1,116-square-metre building will contain a shopping centre, with five storeys of office space above.

A roof garden restaurant will occupy the top of the building.

The bespoke facade will front all of the office floors, as well as the upper level of retail.

Renderings show the triangles taking on a range of golden shades, as they reflect light from different angles.

“The resulting effect is that of a vibrant and iridescent surface, a pattern of aluminum triangles playing with the sunlight to create reflections in different nuances of colour,” said Stefano Boeri, founding partner of Stefano Boeri Architetti.

“This particular cladding solution, specifically designed for our first Albanian project, plays an essential role in defining the uniqueness of the building and contributes to underling its importance as a new landmark of this urban district”, added Francesca Cesa Bianchi, project director for the studio.

The block is one of several big architecture projects buildings underway in Tirana.

BIG has designed a bow-tie-shaped theatre for the city, while MVRDV is planning to convert the city’s pyramidal monument to communism into a technology education centre.

Stefano Boeri Architetti is also working on three new schools for the Albanian capital, which will remain open 24-hours a day to double up as community centres.

Ström Architects unveils renderings of British seaside getaway

Expanses of glazing meet darkened wood in this contemporary holiday home designed by British practice Ström Architects, which will be erected on the Isle of Wight coast.

Island Retreat by Ström Architects

Island Rest house will be set within a sloping creek that overlooks the Solent, a 20-mile strait of water that divides the Isle of Wight from mainland England.

The idea for the project – which was granted planning permission earlier this month – came after the Hampshire-based practice was approached by a couple to create a “special space to escape” with their three children.

Island Retreat by Ström Architects

The house will comprise of one low-lying, rectilinear volume clad in black stained larch wood and fronted by large panels of glazing. It will also be placed on the highest point of the site to lessen the risk of flooding.

One side of the volume will accommodate an open-plan living and dining area, while the other will have a series of bedrooms, which extend slightly beyond the slanted terrain and appear to be elevated above ground.

The rooms are all orientated to the house’s north to optimise views.

“This creates a dramatic impact as you look through the house to the gardens and water beyond, and inside a sense of light and space,” Ström Architects explained.

Island Retreat by Ström Architects

Separated from the sleeping quarters, the master bedroom will be located behind the living area and have direct access to an outdoor deck where inhabitants can sunbathe.

Interiors will be finished in contemporary style with a selection of neutral-tone furnishings, and the garden will feature a swimming pool bordered by wildflowers.

Island Retreat by Ström Architects

Renderings of the project were completed by Portugal-based studio Numa. Last year they produced hyper-realistic drawings of Ström’s Pyrus 9 and Pyrus 10 villas, which cantilever over a steep hillside in Lindingö, Sweden.

The practice added a gabled timber annex to a house to in England’s scenic New Forest.

Competition: win a Number Cruncher from Mr Jones Watches

Dezeen promotion: the latest Dezeen competition offers readers the chance to win one of five Number Cruncher watches from Mr Jones Watches, created in collaboration with artist Onorio D’Epiro.

Number Cruncher is designed to be a playful way of telling the time, with a monster holding the hour in his hand, and the minute in his stomach.

According to Mr Jones Watches: “Number Cruncher is a hungry monster, he stomps around cities on the hunt for tasty treats – he steals from clocks mostly, but he’s not fussy – he’ll even eat cars and the odd person!”

“Number Cruncher is plucking the hours from the sky, while the minutes churn around in his stomach, mixing with all the debris of his rampage.”

Individually printed and assembled in London, each watch comprises a stainless-steel strap with a polished silver finish. Rather than requiring a battery, the watch is powered by the wearer’s movement.

“With Number Cruncher I wanted to try and tell a miniature story – the watch is a snapshot of a narrative and the viewer feels a range of emotions for the monster in his new surroundings,” added D’Epiro.

“The idea that someone may be wearing this little rampaging creature stuck inside a city in a watch brings a smile to my face.”

We have five Number Cruncher watches to give away. Alternatively, the watch is available to buy from the Mr Jones Watches website.

Competition closes 8 October 2018. Five winners will be selected at random and notified by email, and their names will be published at the top of this page.
