Chelsea FC shelves plans for Herzog & de Meuron-designed stadium

Herzog & de Meuron‘s plans to update Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium have been put on hold indefinitely due to an “unfavourable investment climate”.

Chelsea Football Club released a statement today saying the £500 million renovation plans by the Swiss firm had been put on hold.

“No further pre-construction design and planning work will occur. The club does not have a time frame set for reconsideration of its decision,” reads the statement.

“The decision was made due to the current unfavourable investment climate.”

It is the latest stumbling block in the stadium expansion plans, which were first unveiled in 2015 and granted planning permission in 2017.

Earlier this year the local council had to step in to prevent a court injunction against the design of the stadium, which a group of residents claimed would block light to their properties.

Jacque Herzog and Pierre de Meuron’s Basel-based practice was brought on board to increase the spectator capacity of the stadium, which is located in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

The defining feature of the design was the addition of 264 brick piers, which would enclose the existing stadium to create a covered walkway around its perimeter.

The brick pillars would have supported a steel ring above the pitch, creating the necessary room for extra stands as well as a shop, museum and restaurant.

Stamford Bridge was originally built in 1876 to designs by Scottish architect Archibald Leitch and used as an athletics club before becoming Chelsea’s home ground in 1905.

Herzog & de Meuron, which came in at number four on the Dezeen Hot List 2017, is currently working on the conversion of a Moscow brewery into a stilted housing complex and a residential tower near Miami Beach.

ODA completes top-heavy residential tower in New York City

The top floor of this glazed housing complex in New York’s Lower East Side, by architecture firm ODA, has a footprint twice the size of the ground level.

Named after its address, 100 Norfolk spans 50,000 square feet (4,645 square metres) across 12 storeys.

100 Norfolk by ODA

New York firm ODA designed the building in compliance with the area’s strict zoning laws, which dictated its height of 120 feet (36.5 metres).

However, the studio realised that it could maximise the floor area by obtaining air rights from its low-rise neighbours.

100 Norfolk by ODA

This way, the building is allowed to cantilever over the adjacent two-storey structures, and gain extra space for more homes. Every two floors above level six, the 100 Norfolk extends sideways as well as upwards.

“Instead of locating the bulk of the building’s mass at its base — where fresh air and sunlight are diminished, and street noise abounds — we wondered whether the massing could essentially be reversed, with a narrow base rising to a more expansive top,” said ODA in a project description.

100 Norfolk by ODA

This organisation has several advantages, according to ODA. More residences benefit from better light and views, while occupants can enjoy a much larger roof terrace. The total outdoor area measures 7,800 square feet (725 square metres).

“Unlike the more traditional, penthouse-topped model, in Norfolk, these benefits are democratised, enjoyed by the majority of tenants,” the firm said.

100 Norfolk by ODA

Situated between Delancey and Rivington Streets, 100 Norfolk takes cues from a nearby blue glass residential tower by architect Bernard Tschumi.

The new building is wrapped in glazed curtain walls, exposing the trusses that enable the top-heavy tiered construction.

“Leaving the trusses deliberately exposed serves as a visible celebration of the project’s game-changing morphology,” said ODA.

Inside are 38 residential units, with the majority of apartments containing one or two bedrooms. Residents also have access to a gym.

The Lower East Side is rapidly evolving, with a basketball court painted with a colourful mural by Kaws and a newly opened pizza spot with perforated metal partitions by Jordana Maisie among recent projects completed in the neighbourhood.

ODA’s other projects in the city include a condo building with a series of cascading balconies in Brooklyn’s Gowanus area and a residential complex in Manhattan with a dark aluminium facade.

Declaring laundry bankruptcy: How to use the laundromat to get your laundry routine under control

As I’m writing this, I’m sitting in a laundromat. I won’t divulge too many details, but the words “broken” and “dryer” and “angry” would aptly belong in a statement about why I’m in my present location.

Since I’m trying to look on the bright side of this situation, I’m reminding myself that all of my clothes will be washed, dried, and folded in less than two hours. If I were doing my laundry at home with just one washer and one dryer, it would take me close to two days to get my mountain of clothes under control. (This particular mountain being a direct result of the “broken dryer” mentioned above.) If I were to wait to do my laundry until after the new dryer is delivered, I then would have to walk up and down the stairs about 20 times and I would be tied to my house since I’m not too fond of letting the machines run when I’m not at home. So, instead of doing this mess in a couple days, I’ve declared a laundry bankruptcy and headed to the laundromat.

If you’re someone with a mountain of laundry who is having a problem getting your laundry situation under control, I think that the laundromat bankruptcy plan is a good plan to follow. Go once to the laundromat, get all of your clothes washed, and then get started on your new laundry routine at home with a clean slate. To complete the laundry bankruptcy plan you can do your laundry yourself, or you can use the Wash-Dry-Fold service that most laundromats offer.

I have friends who don’t have washers and dryers and they exclusively use the Wash-Dry-Fold services in their neighborhoods. One friend of mine who lives in New York’s West Village has found that it is only $4 more to have his laundry done for him than if he were to do it himself. His believes his time is more valuable to him than $4, so every Monday he makes a trip to the Wash-Dry-Fold on his way to work and picks his clothes up that day on his way home. My local Wash-Dry-Fold charges $1 per pound of laundry with a minimum $10 purchase.

There is something simple and wonderful about using the laundromat as your first step in getting on track with a home laundry routine. If you find yourself under a mountain of clothes, it is definitely worth considering. Also, if you don’t have a washer and dryer in your home or you have a set you don’t use, you may want to consider using the services of your local Wash-Dry-Fold. You may find that the expense of the service is less than the amount you value the time you could spend doing something else.

LIV’s Watches Are Proof that the Luxury Watch Industry’s Monopoly Can Be Beaten

What the people at LIV are doing is an absolute uphill battle. Challenging the watchmaking industry can become an ugly battle, but challenging the tech industry too?? That’s just unfathomable. But that’s what LIV is doing. The watch industry is being shaken down by the consumer tech industry, one giant, holding onto its guns… precision and tradition, while the other, challenging it with the smartwatch, something to replace the age-old classic with a modern timepiece that does everything your phone does. In the midst of all this, LIV is pushing out remarkable timepieces that are revolutionizing the watch business, by doing something none of the giants are doing… connecting directly with the consumer.

The creators of the most crowdfunded Swiss watch to date, LIV’s philosophy is to establish a rapport with past consumers, and build relationships with new ones. Their watches are made using Swiss precision, but most importantly, with customer feedback. Their fourth crowdfunding campaign sees not one, but FOUR watches to choose from, sporting different layouts, materials, and designs, but all united by LIV’s design language. Sporting a circular dial and a maverick-ish flavor we’ve come to love after their previous Rebel watch, LIV’s latest offerings are a Pilot’s Watch, a Diver’s Watch, a Swiss Auto Chronograph inspired by the original LIV watch, and a watch with an alarm function.

All of LIV’s watches come with intricate Swiss-made movements encased in precise machined 316L Stainless Steel (with the Pilot’s edition available in Titanium). The watches, given their bad-boy personality, go well with both silicone straps, giving them a sporty avatar, as well as the French and Italian leather straps, bestowing upon them a persona we love calling ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. All four watches come with a 5 year international warranty and prices that seem ridiculously low, thanks to LIV’s commitment to connecting directly with its consumers, rather than applying inflated brand-markups that the watch industry is so notoriously famous for. LIV’s watches show that stellar quality, backed by a consumer-centric approach can help dethrone even the largest of giants in any industry. Check and mate, Rolex!

Tats for Rats!

sensa_01

I’ve never really considered how lab rats are organized. It’s a hard job but someone’s gotta do it! SensaLab makes it simple! This truly innovative animal identification system enables fast and accurate data collection and management for research laboratories.

Designed with lab rodents in mind, the Ai.Ink module uses sensors to automatically apply a tattoo at the precise depth of each rodent’s tail, ensuring the permanent, clear and consistent visual identification of each animal. Modular, colour-coded inserts allow Ai.Ink to be quickly adapted to mice, pup or rat. Up to five Ai.Ink modules can be linked to allow concurrent application of IDs, making this the fastet visual ID system in the world.

Furthermore, the AI.Inject uses uses patented injection technology to safely implant the world’s smallest RFID tag into the tail of the rodent. The device consists of a reusable handle and single-use cartridge, with the needle retracting into the housing after use to avoid the need for sharp object disposal.

New Port House in Anvers by Zaha Hadid Architects

An Incredible Gigantic Helium-Filled Drawing Tool

Futuristic Deserts in Andalucia by Al Mefer
