This Guy Made a Functional Kitchen Knife Out of Aluminum Foil in His Kitchen!

This is total zombie apocalypse stuff. Let’s say the world’s ending, there’s no more electricity and you need a knife. But all you’ve got are a roll of aluminum foil, a source of open flame and some unpowered hand tools. What do you do?

In short, this:

Admittedly, not all of you are going to have the sharpening media lying around, unless you’re knife nuts or hand tool woodworkers. But the fact that this is possible at all beggars belief.

I also love the Shiba-Inu- and cow-shaped precision-spout water dispensers he used for the diamond plates:

Weird, and awesome, design from Japan.

Estúdio BRA creates slender urban home for young couple in São Paulo

Brazilian firm Estúdio BRA Arquitetura has designed a compact house for a long and narrow parcel of land, incorporating front and rear courtyards, and a rooftop deck.

Casa Piraja by Estudio BRA

The Pirajá House occupies a four-by-24-metre lot in the Pinheiros district in São Paulo. Designed for a young couple and their dog, the project entailed razing most of an existing home that has been in the same family for three generations. Its low ceilings and overly compartmentalised spaces failed to meet the needs of the current occupants.

Casa Piraja by Estudio BRA

“In order to adapt the house to the contemporary way of living, the old structure was demolished and only the masonry walls were maintained, which are made of solid brick and had a structural function,” said Estúdio BRA Arquitetura, a local firm started in 2012 by André Di Gregorio and Rodrigo Maçonilio.

The architects conceived a 110-square-metre, two-storey dwelling that incorporates the original brick walls. On the street-facing elevation, the upper portion is clad in concrete and slightly cantilevers over the ground level.

A large opening in the facade serves as a Juliet balcony with a glass railing. A wooden shutter enables the aperture to be sealed off as needed. The ground level of the residence is fronted by a courtyard lined with tall brick walls covered in a textured grey material called chapisco.

“The course begins in the frontal retreat, in which the landscaping formed by species native to the Atlantic forest makes the arrival at the house seductive,” the architects said.

A glass pivot door marks the home’s entrance and leads into an open kitchen and dining area. White brick walls are paired with a marble island and warm-hued wooden cabinetry, all of which were designed by the architects. The flooring consists of patterned tiles and cumarú wood.

Occupying the rear of the ground floor is a living room, which also features exposed brick walls and wooden flooring.

A contemporary foam-green sofa sits opposite a shelving unit that accommodates books, a large television and a collection of action figurines.

“In the living room, the structure becomes apparent: cylindrical section metal pillars, metal beams, panel slabs, massive bricks and finally the metal sheet shelf that was designed by the architects,” said the firm.

A sliding glass door opens onto a backyard with native plants and a jabuticabeira tree, or Brazilian grapetree, which not only provides shade but also produces berries. The rear of the yard contains a bathroom and a covered barbecue area.

The home’s two bedrooms are located on the second floor, which is accessed via a staircase that is part concrete and part metal.

“The route to the upper floor takes place from the ladder executed in mixed structure in two sets that do not touch – the first in polished concrete and the other in folded sheet metal,” the architects said.

A metal stair leads to the rooftop, where the team installed a shed for laundry and mechanical equipment. The rooftop deck also offers a vegetable garden, a small lawn and sweeping views of the urban setting.

Other dwellings in São Paulo include an apartment by Fernanda Marques, where a swimming pool serves as the centrepiece, and a slender home by Terra e Tuma that features two interior courtyards.

The Apple Watch first launched back in 2014, featuring a purely digital square face, interchangeable straps and a sapphire screen. At the time, Apple CEO Tim Cox said: “We set out to create the best watch in the world.”

It got off to a shaky start, suffering criticism from designer including Yves Behar and Technology Will Save Us co-founder Bethany Koby, and then later from Apple co-founder Steven Wozniak.

However sales are understood to be strong. In its latest financial results, Apple reported 70 per cent year-on-year growth in the “other” section of its products, which includes the Apple Watch, Apple TV, Beats headphones and iPod.

And last year, at the launch for the Apple Watch Series 3, Cox revealed that smartwatch usage had increased by 50 per cent since the launch of the previous version.

A True ‘King’ of Fidget Spinners!

Designed to spin at a break-neck 3600 RPM, plated with real gold, and with not one, but two halos, the Halospheres isn’t some lowly fidget toy. Designed to look positively heavenly, the Halospheres has a premium touch, making it fit for a CEO or Senior Executive’s work desk, replacing the Newton’s Cradle most desks usually have.

The Halospheres comprises two gold-plated spheres that rest against a smooth, non-scratch platform. Spin the Halospheres with your hand, and accelerate them further with the metal straw provided, and you notice something unusual. One metal ball lifts upwards, spinning in midair. At the kinds of speeds the spheres spin at, it’s virtually impossible to see the two spheres, but what you do see is a swirl of reflections off the metal balls… and since one of them is in mid-air, you see two distinct halos (swirls of light) appear pretty much out of nowhere.

The Halospheres isn’t just a spinning toy. It demonstrates a physical phenomenon called the Magnus effect (visible when a football curves when kicked, or a baseball takes a curved trajectory when launched). When both spheres spin together, one of them lifts off the surface, spinning in mid-air. When the two incredibly smooth and shiny balls spin on two different vertical plains, they create halos caused by the lights in the room shining on them. The fact that both spheres spin on different plains at speeds of 3600 RPM creates these halos since the human eye can’t really track the spinning sphere anymore and all they see are blurs of light.

The Halospheres box set comes with the spinning platform, two gold-plated metal spheres, the spinning platform, and the metal straw. Designed to move 10 times faster and look a 100 times better than a fidget spinner, the Halospheres make for great breaks between work, and look absolutely hypnotic both when static and spinning… and with two golden halos that characterize it, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to call it the king of fidget spinners!

The Halospheres are first cast from stainless steel and then polished to a mirror finish. After which, they are plated with real gold for that characteristic halo hue.

The spinning plate is hand cast in concave form from black resin and then highly polished, resulting in a perfect pairing for both performance and aesthetics.

halospheres_desktop_toy_07

How does it work?

As it spins on its centre axis on the concave plate, it also rolls like a wheel, which generates a lift force on one sphere raising it into the air – much like forces at play on a curveball. This is known as the Magnus effect.

This reduced friction together with its high relative mass and angular momentum, allows the Halospheres to accelerate to extreme velocities.

halospheres_desktop_toy_06

The halo effects themselves are a result of its spherical shape. Each sphere creates a pinpoint light reflection in its mirrored finish from any significant light source in the room – be it light from windows, lamps or flashlights. As it spins at great speed, the pinpoint reflections blend together to our eye, creating its characteristic halo effects.
