Goodyear's spherical tyres shape-shift to suit different terrains

Goodyear has updated its spherical tyres for self-driving cars, adding a “bionic skin” of sensors that reads the road and adapts to suit different terrains.

The Eagle 360 Urban concept tyres were unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and build on a design released by Goodyear the previous year.

Designed to be used with self-driving vehicles, the 3D-printed spherical tyre uses artificial intelligence to adapt automatically to its environment.

Its surface is covered in what Goodyear describes as a “bionic skin” of sensors, which are able to sense driving conditions before feeding it back to the AI system.

Made of super-elastic polymer, the skin is able to expand and contract. Its outer layer covers a foam-like material that is strong enough to remain flexible, despite the weight of a vehicle.

Based on the information gathered, such as weather and terrain, the system would transform the tyre so that it suits the surrounding conditions.

Components beneath the surface would reshape the individual sections of the tyre’s tread design, adding dimples for wet conditions or smoothing the tread for dry conditions. Goodyear likens these components to human muscle.

The Eagle 360 Urban tyre could then share its information, chosen course of action and its success with other vehicles.

The smart tyre also has the ability to automatically repair itself. Should the so-called bionic skin become damaged, the sensors in the tyre can locate the puncture.

The tyre would then rotate to create a different contact patch, and a “self-healing” process begins, with materials that are specifically designed to be able to flow towards the puncture.

The American company believes the sphere-shaped tyres could make driverless cars safer and smoother to run.

“A revolution will take place at the intersection of autonomy, mobility and connectivity,” said Jean-Claude Kihn, president of Goodyear Europe, Middle East and Africa. “As this unfolds, tyre technology will be even more important than it is today.”

“To safely navigate their surroundings, the autonomous vehicles of the future will need to learn to cope with the millions of possible unknowns we face in everyday driving scenarios. To do so they will need access to data and the ability to learn and adapt.”

This year’s Geneva Motor Show takes place from 9 to 19 March. Other news from the event includes Volkswagen’s friendly new shape for cars of the future and Airbus’ concept for a flying car.

MMT creates limited-edition timepiece inspired by art deco era

MMT has updated its Circles collection with a new limited-edition timepiece, which is now available to purchase from Dezeen Watch Store.

Circles K features a deep-black embossed dial and stitched black snakeskin strap. According to the Hong Kong-based brand, rich colours and luxurious materials were chosen to evoke the glamour associated with the art deco movement.

A circular grooved rose-gold bezel with matching hands and indices provides a contrast to the dark base colour.

Like other watches in MMT’s Circles range, it has a two-part Swiss movement that doesn’t require a crown to set the time, giving the 38-millimetre case a clean silhouette.

The time is instead adjusted by applying pressure to a central button on the case back, which is made from black-plated stainless steel.

The watch has a domed mineral glass lens and is water resistant for added protection.

Hong Kong-based brand MMT was founded in 2011 by two brothers, Jeremy and Baptiste Guedez, and their friend Thomas Letourneux.

“MMT is a brand about time and its physical representation, so we will keep exploring all the forms it can take,” Letourneux previously told Dezeen. “What interests us is when an emotional connection is created between the wearer and its timepiece.”

Other MMT launches at Dezeen Watch Store have included the popular Calendar timepiece, which functions as a contemporary pocket watch, and the engraved Moonlight collection, which references the moon’s surface in its design.

Hibinosekkei installs micro-house in Japanese kindergarten to encourage independent play

Japanese studio Hibinosekkei has added a small wooden playhouse to a kindergarten in the city of Saga to encourage independent domestic role play.

Atsugi-based Hibinosekkei designed the small gabled playhouse within the open-plan corridors of the school. The 15-square-metre space houses toy versions of the typical amenities used to carry out household chores.

The structure is made entirely from unfinished pine, with the exterior clad in horizontal planks and the interior lined in broad boards.

A child-sized kitchen and laundry area, and a wood burner to all children to mimic the typical task carried out in a family home.

The half-open gabled roof with exposed trusses allows natural light to flood the space. Further windows on the facade let children engage with the rest of the nursery and teachers monitor play without unnecessarily interfering.

Hibinosekkei invited the kindergarten children to visit the site during its construction so they could learn about the carpentry involved.

“We are challenging the conventional methods and creating opportunities to increase the possibility of exploration and curiosity amongst children by keeping them in close contact with the [work being carried out by] adults,” said the designers, who named the project Ouchi, which translates from Japanese as small house.

Inside, a ladder leads to a small raised area where children can read and play, or alternatively pop their heads out through two open skylights to look out into the main kindergarten.

A kitchen worktop, table and chairs provide a space for the children to pretend to prepare meals and wash dishes.

Further seating surrounded by a low wall is located outside at the rear of the house.

Other recently completed kindergartens include a space in Madrid by Rica Studio featuring thick inhabitable walls that children can clamber into.

Similarly to Ouchi, British Lipton Plant installed a tree-like structure to connect the main play area of a nursery in east London with an elevated platform.
