Bob Marley Intimate Portraits in Jamaica

Playful Illustrations with Random Objects by Diego Cusano

A Range You Can Move With

bchef_01

Whether you’re a cook with a compact space or a multitasking chef, the B’CHEF makes it easy for you to boil, simmer, saute, fry or sear anywhere with an outlet. This all-in-one cooking solution uses an induction system that reacts with the cookware. Unlike many other induction cookers, the two distinct sections are completely detached, making it possible to flip, shake and toss ingredients as you would with a traditional range!

Designer: Sumin Shin

bchef_02

“According to its own principle, heating section of induction range and upper part of pan should be tightly contacted. Because of it, movement of pan was restricted. The heating section and body of B’chef are separated, one do not have to be restricted. One can freely shake, bounce or whatever one could do on stove freely.

For a higher degree of freedom, body and heating section had to be wirelessly connected. Magnetic induction transmitter uses two coils (one transmitting, and one receiving magnetic field). Through them, electricity can be transmitted to each other, and heating part and pan can be connected through electromagnet. Lighting around the magnetic induction transmitting part shows the power of heat for users to acknowledge easily.”

Jean Nouvel designs striped flooring collection for Bolon

Jean Nouvel has partnered with Bolon for the Swedish flooring brand’s first collection designed by an architect, which launches at Stockholm Furniture Fair today.

The woven vinyl flooring collection is patterned with lines of varying thicknesses. Nouvel describes the flooring as architectural.

“The freedom is yours to use the flooring to play with colour and light, and engage the windows of the space,” said Nouvel. “It is not a decorative carpet, but an architectural floor.”

The Bolon by Jean Nouvel Design flooring has a textured surface that looks different depending on the angle it is viewed from and how it catches the light.

Bolon – whose previous collaborations have been with designers and design brands like Missoni – are positioning the flooring as a means to experiment with layout and natural circulation in interior spaces.

The flooring can be laid vertically, horizontally or at a diagonal to windows. The latter appeals to Nouvel, who associates it with the image of sunlight coming through glass.

“I’m a bit of a minimalist, so I enjoy it when the figurative theme disappears and one goes towards the most essential thing: the basis of the texture,” he said.

The range comes in a colour palette of blues, reds, greys and black. It is available in rolls or as 50-by-50-centimetre tiles.

Nouvel is a Pritzker Prize winner who came in at number 40 on the inaugural Dezeen Hot List – a guide to the most read-about architects, designers and institutions of the last year.

His famous buildings include Paris’s Fondation Cartier centre for contemporary art and Barcelona’s Torre Agbar skyscraper.

Adam Kane adds gabled artist's studio and gallery to Australian home

Architect Adam Kane has added a garage and painting studio to a house in the Australian state of Victoria, which features pitched corrugated-metal roofs, cement walls and pared-back interiors.

Local architect Adam Kane placed the studio at right angles to the residence to orient it towards indirect southern light, while the garage is placed opposite.

The arrangement of the Blackwood Studio creates a courtyard in between the three volumes, while also maintaining views between the residence’s entrance and the street, and towards the garden.

Kane chose the gabled shape and corrugated-metal roofing to reference the style of surrounding barns.

The cement-sheeting on the exterior is left free from ornamentation to add a contemporary update to the traditional form.

A minimal aesthetic is used inside the painting studio, including concrete flooring, to complement the exterior. White-painted walls also provide blank surfaces for displaying artwork.

Integrated LED strips set in the ridge of the ceiling are intended to mimic a crack of sunlight, while also providing diffused lighting for painting and displaying art.

“The light’s integration within the ceiling was also able to enhance the clean and strong conceptual aesthetic, devoid of light fixtures, while adding a sense of volume to the relatively small floor area,” said the architects.

Simple custom-made rods span the width of the ceiling to brace the structure, and black frames used for the openings are intended to contribute to the interior’s minimal aesthetic.

The Blackwood Studio project is one of a recent series of homes adding studio spaces in their gardens.

Other examples include a gallery and art studio in western Sydney clad in telegraph poles and a shared workspace in London covered in cork.
