The Human Ambulance Bag

Any mountaineers here? You guys will agree that mountain-climbing related injuries are the absolute worst. Not only are you completely cut off from civilization, the terrain makes it impossible for medical assistance to reach you in time. That’s where the entire idea of St. Bernards in the mountains came in. However, man’s figured out a way of stepping effectively into this equation, carrying relief to the person in need, oftentimes even escorting them back to the base. The Portable Rescue Bag is a piece of design intervention that allows the human to become an ambulance of sorts. The Bag has four modes of use in which it can be used to carry supplies (medicine, kits, apparatuses) as well as humans, and in dire scenarios, both. Kudos to the design team for making this potential life-saver!

The Portable Rescue Backpack is a winner of the Red Dot Design Award for the year 2015.

When kids saved the world

life_slide_1

I remember having a fire-truck toy as I was a kid. Coupled with my wacky childish imagination, I’d envision scenarios where instead of ladders on fire-trucks, there’d be spiral slides, so that victims and escapees could slide down the spiral to safety. Life Slide is an actual concept built on an idea that sparkles of creativity that’s common to children. The Truck comes with an expandable slide (it isn’t a spiral though), that allows victims to quickly exit the burning building. Isn’t it an unusually brilliant idea?? I personally love this instance of lateral thinking!

Lights that Hang Together, Stay Together

u33_01

What you’re looking at might seem like one ordinary (yet completely beautiful) pendant lamp… but it’s actually 5 or 6! Despite its seeming complexity, the “u33″ is actually one single pendant that offers a simple way to combine and assembled with like-units to fulfill a myriad of lighting requirements.

3 true sides feature what looks like lime green accents but are actually contact points where each light can be pressed together. Almost limitless in visual and functional variation, it’s a simultaneously elegant and playful pick for a variety of living spaces from the dining room to den!

S is for Sexy

The One S is the better-looking, younger brother of the Xbox One that many are heralding as the most attractive console ever. The design team, led by Andrew Kim, was tasked with creating “a more friendly and universal product that doesn’t evoke traditional ‘gaming’ cues,” while maintaining the Windows 10 design language within the new hardware. The minimalist console’s most noticeable features are a new crisp white color and overall down-scaling which includes ditching that bulky power supply! Reduced to just 3 distinct external structures, the resulting aesthetic is slender, stark and way more stylish than any console before it… especially any Xbox!

Designers: Andrew Kim, Nicolas Denhez, YeongKyu Yoo, Bryan Sparks, Youngduk Song & Travis Hosler

Glowing and Growing

You see, the thing with the olden days was that sunlight was all we had. Providing light and nourishment (Vitamin D) for both flora and fauna, until we went and invented fire and consequently the light-bulb (You say Edison, I say Tesla, that’s a whole different argument). The point I’m trying to make, is that light was synonymous with growth/nourishment since time immemorial. Ambienta reminds us of that. Designed to be a lamp that also has a self irrigating planter with it, the lamp not just lights up the room, but also shines down on the plants, providing them with their daily photosynthetic needs. The LEDs within the lamp mimic natural white light enabling floral growth, and can also be switched to ambient light, if you want something more mellow for your space. The Lamp is easy to use from the get go, with a design that integrates as well as separates electrical components from soil and water. The central channel carries the water to the soil, and the opening on top is where you periodically pour water in. The soil bed is actually an engineered material called rockwool, known to help retain water and also enable faster growth in plants. Ambienta’s clever design comes to you fully assembled. All you have to do is place the plants (pre-grown) into their designated spots in the lamp’s base, and plug the lamp in. That’s all it takes to have a green thumb and an illuminated home…really!
