Inefficiency Machines by Meret Vollenweider and Wasabii Ng highlight energy use in the home

Graduate shows 2016: in this movie, Royal College of Art graduate Meret Vollenweider explains how her interactive installation of human-powered appliances aims to stop people taking electricity for granted.

Vollenweider designed Inefficiency Machines together with fellow graduate Wasabii Ng for the Information Experience Design masters programme at the Royal College of Art. The installation features three electronic devices that visitors must power by exaggerated body movements.

Visitors are invited to turn on a television by jumping up and down repeatedly on a trampoline, light up a bulb by pounding with a pestle in a mortar, or power a hairdryer by screaming into a microphone.

“This project is all about energy and efficiency and how we take electricity for granted,” Vollenweider explains in the movie, which Dezeen filmed at the ShowRCA 2016 graduate show in London.

Each of the installations features sensors, which translate human body movements into electricity.

The faster visitors bounce, the harder they pound, or the longer they scream, the more power will be provided to the appliances.

After each activity, visitors receive a printout stating how much energy they generated and comparing it to the average energy consumption of the particular appliance they were attempting to power.

“The visitor receives their personal efficiency results for them to realise how much it actually takes to power those consumer products that we have,” Vollenweider says.

Vollenweider hopes making people power consumer products with physical human exertion will make them think twice before leaving a light or television on in a room they are not using.

“We just flick a switch and take [electricity] for granted,” she explains. “It’s like an invisible thing in our culture that we wanted to make more tangible.”

She concludes: “We hope that people will become much more aware and change their relationship to those consumer objects and maybe even consume less in the end.”

Watch The World's Biggest Vehicle Crash In Slow Motion

The last few weeks have been exciting for anyone interested in alternative aircraft, as the long awaited Airlander reemerged in the public eye. Dubbed the “Flying Bum” after its enormous hotdog bun body, the Airlander is widely credited as the biggest vehicle of any kind in the world. And it has now officially had the biggest crash in history.

Poor thing. It’s a bit like watching a sick whale.

The ship—now owned by Hybrid Air Vehicles and dubbed the Airlander 10—took what the company is calling “a hard landing” after its second test flight. No one was injured, and the craft’s main frame remains usable, but did sustain damage to the front hull and cabin.

Fans around the world are hoping the crash (though entertaining in a slow motion horror way) won’t dent the company’s plans. As announced back in 2014, the 300 foot ship is hoped to jumpstart an era of unimaginably fuel efficient travel and transport. Its innovative and behemoth design pairs lighter than air gas with a lift-generating body, and can hover, self propel and land in virtually all conditions. It was originally meant for surveillance use by the US government, and now with enough early successes, could totally change long-distance transportation.

It’s an ambitious project, and has needed several years of further development to get to this point, so any setback would feel serious. Until further announcements, nerds like yours truly (and maybe even superfan Bruce “I was totally in Iron Maiden and want to fly an Airlander around the planet” Dickinson) will have to wait with baited breath for the Bum’s next moves.

Is Flight Of Icarus a little too on the nose?

Village Voice Taps Joe Levy as Interim EIC

VillageVoiceCover_8_24In the wake of Will Bourne’s dismissal from The Village Voice, Rolling Stone contributing editor Joe Levy has stepped in this week as the publication’s interim editor in chief. He will continue to contribute to Rolling Stone while he fills in at the Voice.

“We appreciate Joe coming on board to help while we look for a new EIC,” owner Peter Barbey said in a statement to FishbowlNY. “He is one of the best in the business and the Village Voice is lucky to be the recipient of his immense talents.”

One of Levy’s recent pieces for Rolling Stone was a cover story tribute to Prince, anchored around the performer’s final show in Atlanta:

As with so many visionary artists, there was a period in Prince’s career – almost all of the 1980s – when he seemed able to look around corners, when his music seemed to live in the future, and then assemble that future around us.

The Voice says finding a new EIC is a top priority, but that they are not rushing through the process. They are meeting with candidates now.

The Mother of All 2016 Bobblehead Nights

CoreySeagerBobbleheadThursday Aug. 25 will go down in Los Angeles Dodgers history as one of the franchise’s strangest recent regular-season days.

It started with the sport’s best pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, crying in the dugout with A.J. Ellis, his teammate and favorite catcher, upon learning the news that Ellis had been traded to the Phillies. Why the Dodgers chose to not more personally and directly alert Kershaw, we’ll never understand.

Then, with two outs in the ninth inning of that night’s game against arch-rivals the Giants, Dodgers shortsop Corey Seager, on his bobblehead night, broke up a no-hitter about to be notched by Matt Moore. There’s (usually) no crying in baseball, but Moore would have been entirely forgiven if he had also shed tears.

The headlines today are pretty circumspect, from MLB.com to The Huffington Post. In fact, the better ones, per the sample below, are being etched on social media.

Go Home Coat Rack, You’re Drunk

dp_01

The Drunk Palo coat stand earns its namesake from the palo borracho (literally, “drunk stick” in Spanish) tree from which it draws inspiration. Bulbous at the bottom with stainless steel accents that resemble prickles, it’s a subtle abstraction of the tree’s form that looks stylish in a modern mixture of aluminum, steel, acrylic and white wood.
