Gort Scott transforms 1960s block in London to create co-working and maker spaces

London studio Gort Scott has converted a rundown office block in London’s Walthamstow into a hub for local creatives, featuring co-working spaces, maker studios and a bakery cafe (+ slideshow).

Walthamstow Central Parade by Gort Scott Architects

Walthamstow Central Parade was originally built in the 1960s to serve as council offices. Gort Scott has renovated the building to create 650 square metres of space for independent workers and businesses.

Walthamstow Central Parade by Gort Scott Architects

The architects used mid-century-inspired details and furnishings to pay tribute to the building’s heritage, while utilitarian elements suit its more functional new use.

The result is a spacious facility suitable for various activities. The aim is to promote the Walthamstow area as a hub for the creative industries.

Walthamstow Central Parade by Gort Scott Architects

“Walthamstow Central Parade provides stylish workspaces with varied facilities, enabling a range of creative industries and emerging enterprises to thrive in the area,” said Jay Gort, who leads Gort Scott with partner Fiona Scott.

The architects’ first step was to strip back the interior to create a warehouse-like space, with bare walls and floors, and ventilation ducts and electrical fittings exposed across the ceiling.

They restored the unusual facade details, which included a wavy concrete canopy – now painted yellow – and decorative tiles. These provided the design cues for the interior, as well as for the building’s new signage.

“We ensured that the facades of this landmark building were sensitively updated to re-establish the buildings positive contribution to the streetscape,” said Gort.

“We [then] worked closely with graphic designers Polimekanos to develop a graphic identity for the project, which was inspired by the original decorative facade tiles.”

Inside, the main hall is divided up into two areas. The first side is open to the public, and accommodates a bakery cafe, as well as a series of small studio/shop units and exhibition areas.

A few steps lead up to the second area – a co-working space where desks are kitted out with sockets, lamps and plants. Meeting rooms and other facilities are located in the rooms behind.

Gort Scott developed a range of bespoke furniture for the project, helping to keep costs down.

The facility is run by social enterprise Meanwhile Space, which has worked on similar projects across the capital.

“Waltham Forest is London’s fastest growing hotspot for culture and creativity, so it is ideal for us to be able to use this building to provide more space for local creative businesses to grow and thrive,” added local politician Clare Coghill.

Gort Scott was founded in 2007, and has since worked on numerous projects in London’s more deprived communities. These have included a golden public toilet in Wembley and a public space in Tottenham.

The internet of things and home organization

Order a copy today of Never Too Busy to Cure Clutter by Unclutterer’s Editor-in-Chief Erin Rooney Doland.

Last week, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the world wide web (launched August 23, 1991). The phenomenal convenience — and distraction — we know today has evolved tremendously since then, from massive computers to the gadgets in our pockets. So what’s next? Engineers and computer scientists think it’s the “internet of things.”

What is the internet of things, or “IoT”? For our purposes, a working definition is:

“Every day objects with internet connectivity that are able to send and receive data.”

In other words, objects in your home that can grab information from the internet. It’s a compelling idea that has already spawned several interesting devices. But, will it help or hinder home organization? I looked at a few of the more popular IoT products to find an answer.

The Amazon Echo

Amazon’s voice-controlled, internet-connected speaker is part music box, part storefront, and a Siri-like personal assistant. Once plugged in and set up, the Amazon Echo cylinder knows when you’re talking to it and can provide, among other things, streaming music, weather, news, and the opportunity to buy from Amazon.com. How does it fare as an organizational device?

The benefit is the growing collection of services that are available in one place. You’ll get the news stories and streaming music that I mentioned before, but the Echo can also check your Google calendar, read audio books from Audible, even order you a pizza from Dominos. Mostly, it’s about efficiency and convenience. If you like using Amazon.com and want to talk to a device instead of type, it could save you time and be of assistance. If not, the phone in your pocket most likely already does similar things.

Key Finder Tags

Bluetooth-powered key finder tags like the Tile, the Chipolo and the Duet are cute, unobtrusive little doodads (not a technical term) that you connect to items you’re likely to misplace: keys, purses, backpacks, etc. Once paired with our smartphone via the accompanying app, it helps you find where your times have gone.

These get a ringing endorsement from me for their time-saving capabilities. I include “misplacing things I need” among my hobbies. It’s an annoying hobby, but also all too real. Key finder tags greatly reduce the time I spend stomping around the house in frustration.

Smart Lights

There are many Wi-Fi ready, “smart” lighting systems to choose from, each with varying degrees of functioning. The Switchmate, for example, is a tiny piece of hardware that fits over your existing light switch. Installation is as simple as taking the Switchmate out of the box and placing it over a switch. Install the app and it’s ready to use. From there, you can turn lights on and off with the tap of an app.

Meanwhile, the Philips Hue adds more functionality. These smart bulbs can be controlled by a mobile app to turn on and off when you like, notice when you’re home, and so on. They’ll also change the very hue of the light they put out and let you save the various combinations of reds, blues, etc. to meet your mood.

Perhaps I’m a crotchety old man, but my first impulse is, “Can’t I just hit a switch?” In part this seems like a solution looking for a problem. But I see how it could be handy to have your house illuminate as you approach, or turn lights on and off while you’re out, to make would-be intruders think there’s someone at home. In short, I think smart lighting systems are a fun convenience, but not a massive help. At this point, they seem like one more thing to break or go wrong, especially if your home WiFi is out.

This Week: Don't Miss Out On Playing With Your Food, Escaping Manhattan and Climbing Icebergs

Jumpstart your week with our insider’s guide to events in the design world. As the summer exhibit season comes to a close, we’re sad to see our favorites go. Here are some must-see exhibits ending this month that you’ll want to catch before it’s too late:

Monday

You Can Still Get Trippy at GROW

It’s okay if you missed the GROW workshop a few weeks ago—the exhibit runs through tomorrow! Take a walk around a studio where mushroom mycelium gets transformed into lampshades. You may not get to grow something yourself, but the process steps are clearly displayed on the walls of the studio, giving you an inside look into the fsacinating process.

New York, NY. On view through August 30, 2016.

Tuesday

Escape from the Real Manhattan While You Still Can at Sharing Models: Manhattanisms

Each model in this exhibit represents a section of Manhattan. The models establish analytical, conceptual, and physical frameworks for inhabiting and constructing urban spaces and the public sphere. Together, they present a composite figure—a territory that is simultaneously fictional and real, opening a window to new perceptions of the city’s shared assets.

New York, NY. On view through September 2, 2016.

Wednesday

Catch ICEBERGS Before it Melts Away

Designed by James Corner Field Operations, ICEBERGS represents an underwater world of glacial ice spanning the National Building Museum’s enormous Great Hall. The immersive installation features climbable icebergs, “ice” chutes, and caves to explore.

Washington, DC. On view through September 5th, 2016.

Thursday

Focus On Objects After Objects

Objects After Objects is part of Portugal’s Pavilion at the Triennale di Milano. The exhibit proposes a reflection on contemporary project-related practice, including everything from its creative to political aspects. You can expect to see various objects that push the boundaries of classic design.

Milan, Italy. On view through September 12, 2016.

Friday

Dance On Over to Dance Like a Tree

This exhibit is comprised of wearable wood pieces that create sounds while being worn. These tree bark-like suits explore the ambiguity between movement and immobility while covering the whole body. The wearer becomes an abstracted form with a barely recognizable silhouette, creating focus around the senses and perception of the animated objects.

Amsterdam, Netherlands. On view through September 18, 2016.

Saturday/Sunday

Play With Your Food (Before it’s Considered Taboo Again) at Tempting Art

For Tempting Art, designers Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman invited 22 artists and designers to concoct a three-course culinary design menu, meant to be devoured with the eyes. The playful concept explores what happens when we throw the “Don’t play with your food!” cautionary mentality aside and celebrate the kitchen as a playground.

Luxembourg, Luxembourg. On view through September 19, 2016.

Check out the Core77 Calendar for more design world events, competitions and exhibitions—or submit your own to be considered for our next Week in Design.
