The Easy-to-find Fire Extinguisher

If a fire broke out in your office or apartment building, would you know the location of your fire extinguisher? Probably not! You’d likely be in such a panic that you’d also be less concerned with looking for it. The “I’m Here” extinguisher takes these factors in to account & features a built in smoke detector that triggers audible & visible light alarms that not only warn you of fire, but make locating the extinguisher easy. Better yet, the light doubles as a flashlight so you can make your way to safety at night or in heavy smoke.

Furnished Fluid Visualization

Renzo Piano joins Rogers Stirk Harbour and Wilkinson Eyre for Sydney harbour overhaul

Renzo Piano has become the latest architect to contribute a design to the major redevelopment of Sydney’s Barangaroo South waterfront (+ movie).

The Italian architect has designed a pair of residential high-rises for the £3 billion harbour regeneration project, which also includes skyscraper proposals by British firms Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Wilkinson Eyre.

Developer Lend Lease confirmed rumours that Renzo Piano was to be involved in the project in an official announcement last Friday. His two buildings, named One Sydney Harbour, represent the final contribution to the site masterplan, which has now been submitted to the New South Wales planning department for approval.

“The revised concept plan represents an exciting vision for one of the most significant harbour projects in Sydney’s history,” said Andrew Wilson, managing director of Lend Lease’s Barangaroo South team.

The Barangaroo scheme will create over seven hectares of public space, which Wilson said will include “complete harbour-front access and vibrant community space”. A park, waterfront promenade and plaza are also proposed.

“We have ensured that all of the public benefits that we originally proposed in our 2010 plan remain,” he said.

Construction has already begun on International Towers Sydney –  a trio of commercial towers designed by Richard Rogers’ firm to create 280,000 square metres of office space.

Work is also underway on two low-rise apartment blocks known as Anadara and Alexander, designed by Australian practices FJMT and PTW Architects respectively.

The tallest building in the development will be Wilkinson Eyre’s 235-metre-high Crown Sydney Hotel Resort. The firm won a competition in 2013 to design the building, with a nature-inspired design that architect Paul Baker describes as “three petal forms which twist and rise together”.

The project has faced some opposition, with several critics questioning whether the site previously known as East Darling Harbour is suitable for this scale of development. In 2011, Richard Rogers was forced to defend the scheme when an architect branded it “the worst of Dubai”.

But Wilson said the project will allow Barangaroo to come to life: “This unique site is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create something truly special for Sydney”.

If approved, One Sydney Harbour will be Piano’s second project in Australia, following the mixed-use Aurora Place complex the architect completed beside Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens in 2000.

Another waterfront redevelopment is also proposed elsewhere in the city – OMA, Hassell and Populous are working together to redevelop Sydney’s convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour.

Comme des Garçons swaddles models in fabric cocoons for Autumn Winter 2015

Comme des Garcons AW15

Swathes of lace and satin textiles were tied into stuffed bundles and bows to create Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons’ Autumn Winter 2015 collection shown at Paris Fashion Week.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Designer Rei Kawakubo’s latest Comme des Garçons collection, which she described as a “ceremony of separation”, was presented during Sunday’s dramatic catwalk show in the Mineralogy Gallery at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The fabrics and shapes used for the mainly black-and-white collection all have associations with death.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Lace was commonly integrated into Victorian mourning dress, while satin is often employed as coffin lining.

Comme des Garcons AW15

For the collection’s first look, white sheets that could have been deathbed covers were bundled up as if ready to be washed, and formed into a dress.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The second model was similarly wrapped in sheets that were shaped to expand towards the base of a dress, which also featured bows tied up the front.

Comme des Garcons AW15

A similar design was shown later in thick layers of cream lace.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The bow, sometimes found in funeral floral arrangements, became a repeated motif throughout the collection.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Small ties were used to pick out the edges of a white garment with restricted sleeves connected to the torso area.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The same bows also covered a pale skirt and continued in a line up to the shoulder of a matching top.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Another model was wrapped in lengths of material that resembled bandages as if she had been partially mummified.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The stuffed bundles from the beginning of the show were recreated in black lace, and more dark-coloured outfits were formed from tangles of stuffed sausage-like forms.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Sections were cut out from garments, creating missing pieces from the outfits, and one circular dress with a black outline and white centre could be interpreted as a giant hole.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The shape of a large conical veil was repeated as a layered top and a skirt to form a tiered black ensemble.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Where visible, the models’ hair was also used as veils, gelled forward and separated out so the strands formed net-like covers over their faces.

Comme des Garcons AW15

The show culminated in a voluminous, black shin-length piece that was patterned and bunched across its surface and topped with a final bow.

Comme des Garcons AW15

To fit down the narrow catwalk in such large attire, models stopped and turned to face each other momentarily as they passed.

Comme des Garcons AW15

Junya Watanabe, whose label sits within the Comme des Garçons brand, showed origami-influenced garments and headdresses in Paris on the same day as Kawakubo’s show.
