The Wrist Report: All the Latest in Forearm Fashion and Function

WristbandsNov14_SonyFes.jpg

Yup, our tech giant overlords and any number of hopeful startups are still in competition to develop increasingly novel applications for strapping technology to our limbs—a large majority of such devices still jostling for the prime wrist real estate, seemingly unperturbed by the loom launch of the Apple (i)Watch.

In a move unusual on a number of levels (though perhaps not totally unpredictably for a company so entrenched in hardware), Sony have taken a step away from the motion sensors and activity tracking hoo-ha of the smartwatch world and gone incognito on the crowdfunding scene to scope the demand for e-paper wristwatches. The FES watch launched on Japanese crowdfunding site Makuake under a slickly presented pseudo-startup Fashion Entertainments. Prototype photographs and this utterly cringe-worthy pitch video show a continuous form wristwatch with full e-paper surface, capable of switching styling (fairly subtly, it must be said) to imitate stitched leather, crocodile skin or linked metal straps—or indeed switch from black to white when raised to read the time (to the apparent amazement of your fellow partygoers, as the video clearly demonstrates).

Dust Portraits

« Dust Portraits » est une série réalisée par le photographe Gabriel de la Chapelle et capturée dans le brouillard poudreux des tempêtes de sable du Festival Burning Man. Cet artiste a voulu aborder avec poésie l’environnement du festival par le biais de clichés surréalistes du public et des installations. Des portraits de poussières dans un hors-temps flottant, à découvrir.

Fabrica designers create nine unique objects for L'ArcoBaleno

Designers at Italian research studio Fabrica have collaborated with artisans to create a collection of nine one-off objects for online design platform L’ArcoBaleno.

The One And Only collection sets out to challenge traditional online retail models by proposing collectable unique pieces, each by a Fabrica designer, instead of mass-produced goods.

The set includes a distorting mirror, a three-dimensional still-life arrangement and a wall applique made of bread.

“It’s wonderful to be able to collaborate with young talents coming out of Fabrica,” said Ambra Medda, creative director and co-founder of L’ArcoBaleno. “In this project, designers and artisans are mutually supportive, bringing the designer’s work to life at such a high quality and allowing for the artisan’s work to be seen by a larger audience.”

Each object comes with an artistic interpretation of the designer’s drawing – meaning the customer not only gets a product, but also a representation of the idea at its foundation.

The pieces include Narcissus by Japanese designer Tomomi Maezawa, a mirror hand-painted with an optical illusion. A reference to the lines of human facial muscles, the illusion distorts the user’s reflection.

French designer Ferréol Babin created Ombre, a side table made of burnt pine and oak, referencing a traditional Japanese timber-finishing technique.

Portuguese graphic designer Catarina Carreiras‘ Maybe sculpture is made from bread – a material traditionally used in Sardinia to make elaborate forms. Mariana Fernandes, also from Portugal, has designed a hand-woven carpet intended as a wall hanging.

German designer Pascal Hien‘s polished marble cylinder, Division, is designed to be broken. Striking the middle with a steel chisel breaks the cylinder into two pieces, forming two vases.

Natura Morta with Parrot by Italian Giorgia Zanellato is intended to be a reversal of the traditional still-life painting by translating a two-dimensional artwork back into an object.

The collection has been made in Europe by skilled artisans and is available exclusively through the L’ArcoBaleno website.

Established by fashion brand Benetton in 1994, Fabrica offers young designers from around the world a one-year scholarship, accommodation and a round-trip ticket to Italy.

University College London to open dedicated design school at the Olympic Park

News: one of London’s leading universities, already home to the Bartlett School of Architecture, is set to open a school of design at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

University College London (UCL) today confirmed plans to open a second campus at the site of the London 2012 Olympic Games, following the UK government’s pledge to contribute £141 million in funding.

Expected to open in 2018, UCL East will include the new UCL Generator department, which will encompass a new university museum, as well as the University’s first design school in its 188-year history.

“The school will offer new taught courses in design alongside research and innovation opportunities,” said UCL.

The university is already home to the Bartlett, arguably one of the best architecture schools in the world, and the Slade School of Fine Art, whose alumni include Martin Creed, Richard Hamilton and Eileen Gray.

Located south of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, the 4.5-hectare campus will feature a new department for experimental engineering, set to include large-scale fabrication and prototype development facilities available to staff, students and partnering businesses – a bid to boost industry growth.

There will also be a department for innovation and technology, centred around biology and health.

“UCL East represents the largest ever single expansion of UCL since the university was founded nearly 200 years ago,” said UCL vice-provost Stephen Caddick.

“Our new site will be a beacon of how universities should work in decades to come – outward looking, connected to the local community and providing facilities to businesses to work on site to bring new discoveries and inventions out of the lab and into the marketplace.”

Other cultural institutions planning to open new outposts at the Olympic Park include the V&A museum, the Smithsonian Institution and Sadler’s Wells Theatre. A competition was launched in September to find architects and engineers to work on the design.
