A Twist on Tool Design

BONE is an innovative concept for the creation of tools through generative design and selective laser sintering. An algorithm for each type of tool is achieve in order to mimic bone-like structures which are lightweight yet durable. The internal structure saves up to 60% in material and weight without sacrificing durability and strength. The concept aims to provide a near infinite toolbox using a computer, SLS machine and medium like steel powder.

Designjunction is a place where "people can get really excited about design"

London Design Festival 2014: director Deborah Spencer and creative director Michael Sodeau introduce their highlights from designjunction 2014 in this movie produced by Dezeen for the show.

designjunction 2014

Hosted in a former postal sorting office on New Oxford Street during London Design Festival, designjunction 2014 showcased a wide range of furniture, lighting and accessories over four floors.

designjunction 2014

“The concept was to treat it almost like a cityscape,” Sodeau explains. “On the ground floor we have a hustly-bustly Camden Market-type feel. The first floor is a little bit more meandering – sort of like Oxford Street, if you like. On the second floor we have wider aisles with almost an avenue feel.”

New this year was a dedicated lighting show in the basement called lightjunction.

designjunction 2014

“Over the last few years we’ve seen a growth in the lighting industry,” Spencer explains. “What we’ve done this year is open up the basement for a dedicated show.”

designjunction 2014

For the first time the ground floor featured a large exhibition space, which hosted our Dezeen and MINI Frontiers showcase about the future of travel.

designjunction also hosted the first Ventura London exhibition, a new edition of the popular Ventura Lambrate show during Milan Design Week.

“You can see Ventura London as the baby brother of our bigger Ventura Lambrate project,” explains Lisanne Fransen of Ventura Projects. “We have lighting, furniture etcetera, but what we also focus on is the concept.”

Hypetex Halo carbon-fibre chair

A number of new products were launched at the show, including a chair called Halo designed by Sodeau and made from Hypetex, a coloured carbon-fibre material developed by racing car engineers and a new LED light by Jake Dyson, which he claims will last up to 37 years.

Ariel by Jake Dyson

“The Ariel light is named after the first British satellite, which used heat pipes,” Dyson explains. “We’ve incorporated those into our products to rapidly draw the heat off the LEDs. Cooling LEDS is critical to prolonging their life.”

designjunction 2014

The show aims to be both trade and consumer-facing and featured an abundance of pop-up shops, cafés and restaurants amongst the more traditional furniture stands.

designjunction 2014

“The important thing for us with designjunction is to create a destination,” Sodeau explains. “The whole thing is much more of a design experience. We want people to come here and not feel they can whizz round and then leave. So really it’s a place where you can spend the whole day.”

designjunction 2014

There was an auction of chairs and lamps customised by designers including Tom Dixon and Faye Toogood to raise funds for charity Teddy’s Wish.

“We’ve worked with Britain’s most iconic brands – Ercol and Anglepoise,” Spencer explains. “They have kindly donated product to customise to raise funds.”

designjunction 2014

The Flash Factories area also returned from last year, with glass-cutting, upholstery and tile and candlestick making all on show.

“I think from a visitor’s point of view, they come here to get inspired,” Spencer says. “They come here just to get really excited about design.”

designjunction 2014

designjunction took place at 21-23 New Oxford Street, London from 18 to 21 September 2014.

The music featured in the movie is by Junior Size. You can listen to the full track here.

Superior Interiors: NYSID Showcases 90 Years of McMillen

McMillen Inc. turns ninety this year, and the New York School of Interior Design is celebrating the august firm with an exhibition that explores its legacy of superior interiors. Writer Nancy Lazarus got a behind-the-scenes look at the country’s oldest continuously operating interior design firm during a recent visit to NYSID.

30's Cosmopolitan ClubThe white gloves worn in the 1920s, when McMillen was founded, are long gone, but the renowned interior design firm carries on many of the traditions that have accounted for its longevity, said Ann Pyne. As McMillen’s co-president and daughter of the founder, Eleanor Stockstrom McMillen Brown, Pyne shared her inside perspective at a recent NYSID panel discussion. The event coincides with a 90-year retrospective exhibit, on view until December 5.

“Walking into the McMillen office gives you the feeling that you’ve arrived at a company that knows its business,” said Tom Buckley, principal and founder of Brown Buckley, and a former head of McMillen’s design department. “Mrs. Brown had a very progressive mind and was a forward-moving businesswoman.”

As Pyne sees it, the firm’s design authority, non-negotiable business models, devotion to education, and attention to finishes are the cornerstones of its success. McMillen interiors also adhere to the “discipline of the room,” while promoting a sense of conviviality and coziness. That foundation has stayed with McMillen alumni long after working at the firm, noted Buckley.
