The Bottle Humidifier Mini by 11+ weighs just 100 grams and is 15.5 centimetres tall.

“I believe that people can carry the Bottle Humidifier Mini wherever they go,” said 11+ founder Keunha Kim. “They can carry it when traveling. They can also bring it from desk to bed side table.”

The bottle holds 550 millilitres of water, enough to humidify a small room for eight hours.

The humidifier comes with a red USB cable that powers an ultrasonic nebuliser below the cap – a vibrating disk with up to 400 holes in its surface. When the disk vibrates it generates a water mist.

The water passes through a central replaceable filtration stick attached beneath the nebuliser. Once transformed into vapour, it passes though a hole in the aluminium cap.

The bottle is made from a type of plastic designed to mimic the transparency and feel of glass. It minimises the risk of breakage in transit, or when refilling water.

“Due to safety issues, we decided to use plastic rather than glass; however, we did try our best to maintain the same transparency as glass has. That was most difficult part of production,” said Kim.

Understated cardboard packaging for the humidifier elements has embossed white lettering on a grey background.

Bottle Humidifier Mini is the latest addition to a collection of easily transportable products by 11+. The range includes the compact Sound 1 Bluetooth Speaker, the World Clock that rolls to change timezones and an LED lamp that will be released later this month.

Bottle Humidifier Mini by 11+

“We designed and introduced our Bottle Humidifier Mini because we had a plan to build our product line-ups focusing products used on the desk or mobility,” said Kim.

The company has pledged to donate a percentage of the profits raised from the sale of the Bottle Humidifier Mini to support children’s charity Unicef’s work on water sanitation.

Creative Chocolate Skulls

UNStudio's Theatre de Stoep improves its acoustics with a moving auditorium ceiling

UNStudio has completed a theatre in the Dutch town of Spijkenisse, featuring a spotty facade that glows purple at night and an auditorium with a ceiling that moves to improve acoustics (+ slideshow).

Theatre de Stoep by UNStudio

Opening tomorrow, the 5,800-square-metre Theatre de Stoep was designed by UNStudio to provide the town with two new auditoriums that can be adapted to host plays, cabaret, musicals, concerts and dance performances.

UNStudio’s design involved combining both the drama of the theatre with the social aspects of a local community facility, by creating a generous multi-level foyer that functions as both an entrance lobby and a meeting place.

Theatre de Stoep by UNStudio

Studio founder Ben van Berkel explained: “In contrast to today’s mediatised culture, theatre offers the participatory experience of the live event, often appropriately referred to as ‘liveliness’ – the ‘magic of live theatre’, understood as the strange, elusive energy between audience and performer, the community forged together and the momentary collaboration necessitated by the live event.”

The foyer is made up of several interlinked spaces that accommodate cafe and restaurant areas, as well as entrances to the two auditoriums. Bold colours help with navigation, while clerestory windows have been added to flood the space with natural light.

“The vertical foyer becomes a pivotal point in the social functioning of the theatre, a ‘stage’ for the visitors and a dynamic focal point surrounded by viewpoints on different levels,” said Van Berkel.

The smallest of the two halls has enough room for 200 spectators, while the larger hall can accommodate just over 650 people, with over a third of the seats on the balcony.

To ensure versatile acoustics in the main auditorium, UNStudio designed a ceiling made up of mobile elements that can be lowered or angled to suit different volumes. These are complemented by the acoustic panels that line the walls.

A grand staircase leads to the entrances of the two hall, with a curved handrail that also flows into worktops and custom furniture elements.

Externally, the building has a curved body designed to prevent disturbing the natural wind flow to the nearby Nooitgedacht –  a mid-19th-century windmill that has become a local landmark.

The upper sections of the walls are clad with two layers of aluminium. The outer layer is perforated with rows of circular openings with inset LED lighting, giving the building a purple glow at night.

In the early stages of the project UNStudio collaborated with engineering firm Arup to develop the building’s distinct curved form without overcomplicating the structural framework. A Building Information Modelling (BIM) system was utilised, which will be used for the maintenance and management of the building in the future.

Patricia Urquiola designs slanted water jug for Bilbao restaurants

H2O Bilbao by Patricia Urquiola for Bosa

Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola has reinterpreted a traditional Basque vessel in ceramic to serve water from a local aqueduct in the region’s restaurants.

A Kaiku pitcher is traditionally made from wood and is used in the Basque region of northern Spain to serve milk, which can be heated with a hot stone.

Patricia Urquiola‘s H2O Bilbao design is for holding water and swaps wood for ceramics, but retains the historic slanted shape of the Kaiku.

“You can give importance to the contents with the container,” said Urquiola. “Especially if the content is transparent, almost virtual and intangible like water.”

The vessel leans in the direction that the liquid is poured in, forming a natural spout. A large handle on the back rests on top of the jug’s lip.

Produced by Italian brand Bosa, the jugs are designed for serving tap water from Bilbao’s civic aqueduct in local restaurants.

The participating establishments will sell the all-white version of the H2O Bilbao, with proceeds donated to charity Oxfam Intermón to support the construction of wells in Ethiopia.

H2O Bilbao is available elsewhere with a white satin glaze inside and a painted matte copper exterior.

Bosa debuted the design during Milan design week in April, where Urquiola also presented a modular sofa upholstered in jersey fabric for Moroso.
