Little LEGO Windmills

Inspired by the building blocks and modularity of LEGOs, the Windflock is a wind-energy system that is flexible. The ‘add-on’ system is made of mini windmills and can be hooked up with each other. The cool quotient is upped by the fact that when connected, the mini windmills resemble a 3D crystal composition.

The Windflock is a 2014 Red Dot Awards: Design Concept winner.

The Flavour Conductor by Bompas & Parr enhances different flavours in whisky

Food design studio Bompas & Parr has made whisky tasting more theatrical by using a church organ to heighten the perception of different flavours while drinking.

Designed for scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker Blue Label, The Flavour Conductor produces sounds and light effects during an immersive performance with the intention of stimulating six distinct tastes for audience members sipping the drink.

Bompas & Parr commissioned one of Britain’s oldest organ specialists, Mander Organs, to create the bespoke church organ and worked with sensory research professor Charles Spence to “voice” the sounds emitted from the pipes.

Sounds are combined with imagery that covers the smooth sculptural body of the instrument using projection mapping to “correspond in a manner scientifically proven to influence the perception of taste”.

“Developing The Flavour Conductor has been an epic undertaking, combining several centuries worth of technology, literature and science,” said studio co-founder Harry Parr. “It’s been hugely exciting bringing the talents of multiple disciplines of craftsmen and artists together.”

As part of an event titled Symphony in Blue at London’s Merchant Taylor’s Hall last month, audience members sipping their glass of whisky were supposed to be able to distinguish between the flavours of peat, malt, fruit, wood and spices at different points in the performance.

“During a performance of Symphony in Blue, the effect on the audience is compelling, and it really does help you pick apart the rare depth and character of Johnnie Walker Blue Label,” Parr said.

The Flavour Conductor has a series of chimneys that group together the pipes, rising to different heights and each with its top cut off at an angle. A small cabinet for storing whisky bottles and glasses is hidden in the side.

The idea was adapted from various literary references, including J K Huysmans’ 19th century novel A Rebours, which describes a flavour organ that gives taste to music, and a similar concept outlined in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.

The installation forms the centrepiece of an experience, which took place on 16 September in London and will travel around the world over the next year.

Bompas & Parr also combined food and music in a project for Heinz baked beans, for which they created a musical spoon that you listen to through your mouth and a set of handmade bowls to match the brand’s five new flavours.

The designers have also developed glow-in-the-dark ice cream for eating in dark cinemas and jelly moulds of famous buildings.

Design Week Portland: Openings

DWP2014-OpeningParty1.jpg

The Design Week Portland opening party was as beautiful and laid back as you’d expect for Portland. Staged at the historic and dramatic Staver Locomotive building, the scene was split between the odd-old and brightly modern. Entering through a blinding mirror-striped walkway visitors arrived in a huge moodily lit ex-industrial warehouse. Model train tracks wound through parts of the space and acted as unusual counters for drinks vending. The vaulted ceiling was hung with lights and live video installation pieces. Meanwhile outside, fire pits and food carts kept people close and sociable.

Back inside, guests lined up for their chance in a “live photobooth”: a seat in front of a two way mirror, behind which artists scribbled frantically for 90 seconds to produce their portraits. A large glossy black open sketching wall invited anyone to add their own work to the communal pool, with predictably yearbook-like results. The other interactive highlight of the night was Set Creative’s video installation, a pair of dazzle-painted boxes labeled “Fear Of Missing Out” into which viewer peered to watch the crowd around them… and their own darting eyes projected onto pyramid screens above.

All in all, a sweet and visually enjoyable start to a colorful week.

55DSL x 686 Collection

New editions of Minuteman watch by Squarestreet arrive at Dezeen Watch Store

New editions of Minuteman by Squarestreet

Dezeen Watch Store: Swedish designers Alexis Holm and David Ericsson have released eight new styles of their popular Minuteman watch, including six eye-catching one-handed models.

Originally launched in Oct 2013 by the duo’s Hong Kong-based studio SquarestreetMinuteman is a “beautifully simple” watch built using hand-made Mazzuchelli acetate and a stainless steel endoskeleton.

The classic two-handed model features a 60-second index and hour hand with a circular tip that highlights the hour markers, while the one-handed model displays the time in 5-minute intervals.

Eight editions in six new shades of acetate have been added to the collection: black/black and tortoise/croc come in a one or two-handed version, while grey/blackgrey/greenhorn/beige and horn/black are available in the single-hand edition only.

“Minuteman is not only a beautifully simple timepiece, it is also a reaction to how we view time,” Holm said in an interview with Dezeen Watch Store.

According to Holm, the unusual design of the two watch faces is intended to encourage a more relaxed approach to telling the time.

“Instead of knowing the exact second of every minute and stressing over the fact that you’re 45 seconds late,” Holm said, “we invite you to casually glance at your watch and instead say ‘Oh, it’s about quarter past three’.”

“We guessed some people might prefer the more widely used method of displaying time,” he added. “As it turned out, our one-hand model was more than twice as successful as its two-handed brother.”

Designed to withstand a 30-metre vertical dive, the watch has a 4 o’clock date window and is powered by a Japanese made Miyota Quartz movement.

“The most impressive part of Minuteman is definitely its Mazzucchelli acetate outer casing,” Holm said. “The process is remarkable and the result speaks for itself – I’ve never seen plastic with such intense depth and colour.”
