News: furniture e-commerce company Fab has bought Finnish design brand One Nordic in a move to expand its catalogue of original designs and European business.
Dubbed the “luxury Ikea”, One Nordic Furniture Design specialises in making and selling products designed to be shipped efficiently and sold online.
The brand’s creative director Petrus Palmer told Dezeen that the deal with furniture e-commerce company Fab was worth “tens of millions of dollars” in a combination of cash and stock and would result in the Finnish brand owning a 5% stake in Fab.
“Fab delivers a global team of design and e-commerce experts; a proprietary e-commerce technology platform; and the backing of some of the top investors in the world,” said Petrus, who is also one of the co-founders of Swedish design studio Form Us With Love. “We’re thrilled to be working with Fab and the kind of reach they boast.”
The company launched at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2012 with the Bento Chair designed by Palmer.
Fab was founded in America by digital entrepreneur Jason Goldberg and designer Bradford Shellhammer in 2010 as a social network, before quickly evolving into a retail site with a “social commerce” model that encourages members to create inspiration boards of products they like. It is thought to have sold more than 7 million items.
Rumours last summer suggested that Fab was on the verge of collapse, despite recently raising $336 million in new funding, after allegedly firing hundreds of staff. It’s European operation was also hit by the departure of chief European officer Maria Molland.
Today’s announcement appears to confirm speculation that the brand is refocusing on its European audience and aiming to establishing itself as a design name.
“Design is at the centre of Fab—and has been since day one,” said Fab CEO Jason Goldberg. “Teaming up with One Nordic adds incredible talent to our design leadership and brings us ever-closer to our suppliers and manufacturers.”
There are currently no details available on how One Nordic will be integrated into Fab’s existing organisation.
“I just feel that this whole industry is terrible at seeing that many people are moving online and willing to buy furniture online,” said Roos. “In the furniture field many, many companies retail exactly the same way as they did in the seventies.”
Manchester studio DR.ME just returned from Salford University’s degree show and picked out five graduates whose work impressed them…
First up – the work of iIllustration graduate Dan Ho (above), which really needs to be seen to be believed. His intricate pen and pencil work is full of expression and imagination.
From the illustration course – Lewis Loughman‘s fantastic character based work (shown above). It instantly attracts the eye with an unusual and exciting understanding of colour, mixed with a good sense of humour. An illustrator who will go from strength to strength without a doubt – taking his work into ceramics was a pleasure to see.
Adam Gorton (graphic design) had some very interesting typographic work on show (two projects shown, above). On looking through his portfolio it’s also clear to see that he’s already developed an excellent style that will only improve in the coming years.
And here are three collaborative pieces from illustration grads Sam Davies and Ellis Gayle – aka Party Cops – who will leave Salford to take on the world together.
Finally, from the fashion syling and image making course, some great photography from Becca Shaw whose awareness of colour came across beautifully in her work and was an instant stand out.
DR.ME is Ryan Doyle and Mark Edwards. See dr-me.com. More details on University of Salford’s courses at salford.ac.uk.
To announce the winners of the Packaging category, we’ve got a team live from Stockholm, Sweden. Follow along with NINE AB‘s Isabelle Dahlborg Lidström, SNASK‘s Fredrik Öst and Front‘s Charlotte Von Der Lancken—the final jury member being Family Business‘ Mårten Knutsson, who wasn’t available for the live announcement—as they share their thoughts on this year’s honorees:
You may have seen Heimplanet inflatable tents bounce around the Internet before, and they’re doing it again. These tubed geometric things are tents you don’t have to pitch, held up (and possibly down) by air pressure alone. The German conceptual-outdoor company first debuted the Cave, a dome-like 3-person sleeper, then the smaller Wedge for the lone wolf. Now they’re scaling up with the Mavericks—a tent so large and in charge they don’t even give a suggested body maximum.
The tents rely on a series of tubes (don’t we all?), which via an interlocking and overlapping geometric pattern provide stiffness and stability for the skin of the tent. The tubes themselves are a double-layered pneumatic situation, that can be patched like a bike tube. They’re pumped up using a hand pump, and can be connected for quick inflation and then disconnected for safe independence. The pumping process does seem nice and quick, though the larger tents make the larger and heavier Heimplanet pump seem nigh on necessary for the speedy set-up they claim. I’m not really convinced that speed and ease are the selling points here, since a well-designed tent with poles goes up in less than a couple minutes.
The larger two tents don’t even seem to use guy lines or stakes. As they put it, “The diamond. Its stability is based on its specific molecular and crystal structure.” I have no idea how the molecular stability of a diamond in any way applies to the stability of their tents. But here their original “Cave” tent is put to a wind test, apparently without any kind of stakes:

My wife and I live in a rural home on a dirt road with no street lights. Most of our neighbors are “summer people,” meaning their houses are empty for eight or nine months out of the year. All this to say that, when the sun goes down, it gets dark. This can make it difficult to, among other things, find the bathroom at night. Fortunately, Jonny Glow is prepared to light the way!
Meant to “help you see where you are going,” Jonny Glow adheres to the inside of the bowl and is powerful enough to “glow all night.” You can buy one or even a five-pack if you’ve got a large home with several bathrooms. Sure, you could simply install a nightlight or just turn on a light, but whatever. Plus, I bet it really freaks out the cat.
Of course, if you’re the DIY type you easily make your own! Buy a roll of glowing tape, as is often used in theaters, and save a few bucks. Plus, 30 feet of tape should let you do just about every toilet, kitty litter box, doggie door in the house.
