Get a First Look at KeyShot 5

You know, some of the products featured on Yanko Design are concept renderings and many of you are already familiar with KeyShot, the 3D rendering and animation software used to create the visuals for a lot of them. Luxion has released the next version of the software, KeyShot 5. A lot of designers loved the Toon shading, new materials and physical lighting that came with KeyShot 4. Well, KeyShot 5 takes all that up a notch. Here’s a quick overview of the highlights.

KeyShot Cloud

The KeyShot Cloud is the online library where you can find KeyShot resources and share your own. You access it directly inside KeyShot and can browse/search Materials, Backplates, Textures and Environments. Like, download and access resources from anywhere you use KeyShot.

Instancing

Instancing allows users to duplicate parts in KeyShot and on import without increasing file size. Instancing of parts is available within KeyShot as a Pattern tool and completely automated in select KeyShot plugins. All instances can be treated separately for quick appearance studies or linked to apply materials quickly, but will all update when LiveLinking or update geometry is used.

Fade Animation

This comes with the KeyShot Animation Add-on ($500). Fade animation allows you to click a part or group of parts and apply an animation that fades them from one opacity level to another. Since setting up a KeyShot Animation happens in realtime, you can view the animation as you adjust the settings.

NURBS Ray-tracing

This is a KeyShot Pro feature. If you work in a 3D modeling program that creates NURBS geometry, well, KeyShot 5 now offers NURBS ray-tracing. This simply gives you more accurate geometry with smoother edges. It happens automagically on import for any NURBS data imported.

Sun & Sky System

Another KeyShot Pro feature that is part of the HDRI Editor. The Sun & Sky system lets you create physically accurate geographic lighting. Say you want the lighting for today in New York City. Select the date and location, boom, you have sunlight that matches. You can mix it with any other HDRI settings, physical or environmental lighting as well.

There are quite a few more new features in KeyShot 5 as well. You can see them all here and download a free license at keyshot.com/try/.

Smiljan Radic's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion photographed by Jim Stephenson

British photographer Jim Stephenson has shared his images of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2014 by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic, which was unveiled earlier today in London (+ slideshow).

Radic – who has built little outside his native Chile – designed the pavilion as a doughnut-shaped shell that appears to balance precariously over a pile of huge rocks. Openings in the walls form balconies, while a bridge and pathway offer routes inside.

Following a press preview this morning, critics have come out in favour of the design, with comparisons ranging from dinosaur eggs to turtles and spaceships.

“What is most captivating about Radic’s heroically peculiar pavilion is the way that it seems to stand out of time,” wrote critic Ellis Woodman in the Independent.

After describing the protruding front balcony as like “the head of gigantic, lumbering turtle”, he continued: “the spectacularly madcap construction that [Radic] has erected on the Serpentine Gallery’s lawn will certainly prompt many to find out more.”

Writing for the Evening Standard, Robert Bevan said the building was both “a symbol of hope and something more mysterious”.

“Radic has been inspired by the romantic architectural tradition of tumbledown follies in the landscape but his combination of a light upper form and heavy stones below turns what could have been a straightforward re-creation of a Neolithic monument into something vaguely alien and futuristic,” he said.

Guardian critic Oliver Wainwright meanwhile branded it the “weirdest structure yet to have graced the west London lawn” and said it “looks like the site of a momentous pagan ritual”.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion officially opens to the public on 26 June – find out more about the project in our earlier story.

Last year’s pavilion was designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto and comprised a cloud-like structure made from a lattice of steel poles. Other past commissions include Herzog & de MeuronSANAA and Peter Zumthor.

New at Hand-Eye Supply: Mikihasa Folding Kiridashi Knife

Mikihisa1.jpg

The Mikihisa Folding Knife is a cool take on the kiridashi style. Kiridashi (often translated as “to cut out”) are traditionally used for scoring wood, carving, splitting bamboo and small cutting tasks in the shop or classroom. These kiridashi knives are single beveled for an extra fine cutting edge, ideal for super flush cuts in all kinds of crafts. Use with a square for satisfyingly precise lines, and cut paper, plastic, leather, light woods and more with ease. The blade is “blue paper” number 2 steel, a high carbon cutlery steel laminated warikomi style, providing both wicked sharpness and durability.

Kiridashi are usually a single fixed blade with no additional handle—more than a little unnerving to have lying around in a tool box. The Mikihisa adds safety and portability by adapting the style into a folding knife and adding a more ergonomic bubinga wood handle. This thing is pretty large for a folder, more shop tool than EDC pocket knife. It comes nice and sharp, and is super easy to maintain. The lock back is a simple side to side lever. Not the most rugged we’ve ever used, but dependable. Forget the irritation and waste of wimpy little X-Actos, get yourself a traditional(ish) Japanese craft knife that you can count on.

Available now at Hand-Eye Supply.
