Salford Type Foundry

Set up by the University of Salford‘s graphic design students and lecturer Tim Isherwood, the Salford Type Foundry is an online repository for type designed by students from Salford and beyond…

“The idea for the foundry,” explains Isherwood, “came from being frustrated at my students designing great fonts and then leaving them on hard drives or in sketchbooks and so I decided that they needed a greater voice.”

The STF is first and foremost a website (salfordtypefoundry.co.uk) where students can showcase their typographic experiments and typefaces.

Cold Porridge by Alex Holland

“It is a student facing project,” Isherwood continues, “they have designed, coded and built the site as well as the fonts on it. The idea thus far is that we celebrate all things in Salfordian type design, but going forward we are keen to expand to other institutions. The Foundry wishes to become a ‘go to’ repository for student type design from across the country.”

Semaphorme by Simon Walsh

The STF officially launches next week on Wednesday 21 November (21/11/12 – precisely the kind of palindromic date that type lovers always appreciate) with an event in the foyer of Creative Lynx at 52 Princess Street, Manchester where typographic posters will be exhibited and distributed.

Rick Poynor reviews the Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design; Jeremy Leslie takes in a new exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery dedicated to experimental magazine, Aspen; Mark Sinclair explores Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery show of work by the late graphic designer, Tony Arefin; while Daniel Benneworth-Gray writes about going freelance; and Michael Evamy looks at new telecommunications brand EE’s identity. Plus, subscribers also receive Monograph in which Tim Sumner of tohave-and-tohold.co.uk dips into Preston Polytechnic’s ephemera archive to pick out a selection of printed paper retail bags from the 70s and 80s.

The issue also doubles up as the Photography Annual 2012 – our showcase of the best images in commercial photography produced over the last year. The work selected is as strong as ever, with photographs by the likes of Tim Flach (whose image of a hairless chimp adorns the front cover of the issue, above); Nadav Kander (whose shot of actor Mark Rylance is our Photography Annual cover); Martin Usborne; Peter Lippmann; Giles Revell and more.

L.A. Auto Show Design Challenge: Auto Industry’s Top Designers Envision Cop Car of the Future

la-auto-show-design-challenge-2012-02.jpg

Nothing crushes the exhilirating experience of driving a fast car quicker than hearing that siren, then glancing up to see flashing red and blue lights steadily getting larger in your rearview mirror. It’s undoubtedly much more fun to see a police car on the sheet of paper or computer monitor in front of you, where it’s coming out of your pen or your Wacom. Those who agree will dig the theme of this year’s industry-only L.A. Auto Show Design Challenge: To envision a police car of the future.

Though the brief calls for highway patrol vehicles in the year 2025, it also calls for vehicles that can “effectively navigate dynamic urban environments,” perhaps explaining why Mercedes’ Ener-G-Force concept looks more like an off-roader:

The Ducati Hunter

I love my Triumph and rarely give second glances to other supersports, but daaayum this bike would get more than a head turn from me! Stylistically, the Arac ZXS looks something like a hybrid of Jap brands and the Italian Ducati, none of which hold a match to the ZXS’s extremely robust body and aggressive stance. This v-twin beast is 100% street fighter. As with any concept, it’s hard to say what the performance is like, but judging by the mean look on its face, it’s probably safe to say that it’s somewhere between breathtaking and heart-stopping.

Sharp lines and curves surround the engine compartment- the result of a body design that naturally continues through the whole frame, giving the impression of a metal skin with two tone-color (in this case black and fire orange). The seating area is also quite large providing better comfort and comes to a point as the currently popular thinner tail with integrated back light. The front light head is also unique in its pure form and the new technology that uses a light emitting glass plates that gives a bright, white, directional light.

An additional smart riding feature called the “safe drive system” can be toggled on and off, and consists of an integrated sensor that tracks and notes speed and distance from surrounding vehicles. It slightly regulates speed when cruising to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, but is easily bypassed by picking up speed or simply flipping a switch.

Mouse With A Clip!

Although tablets are the way to go, many folks still rely on their laptops for their meetings. Designer Frank Guo innocently muses at the thought of using a laptop mouse, which can be cumbersome. As a solution he’s drawn up on the Clip Mouse, which requires no carrying. Its unique ‘C’ shape and flexible material provide an easy way to affix the mouse to a laptop. Simply slide it on from the side and it attaches to the laptop securely.

Clip Mouse is a 2012 LiteonAward Entry.

Hot Outdoor Lunch

The Green Cooker is an outdoor cooking appliance that utilizes Solar panels and water for it’s functioning. Design-wise it features a flat retractable cooking panel that allows you to conveniently cook food while camping. It folds up to a column size and makes perfect sense as a portable appliance. Although working details are sketchy, it doesn’t take away the fact that the cooker can become a clever addition to any camp-supply system.

2012 Holiday Gift Giving Guide: Ultimate uncluttered gift

Since we began putting together our annual gift-giving guides in 2007, we have always included an ultimate gift in our series. The idea of the ultimate gift is focused on uncluttering and/or organizing and it is sometimes at the high end of the price spectrum for our gift guides. It’s a gift you might give to a loved one, but it also might be an item you add to your wish list.

In 2007, we recommended the Fujitsu ScanSnap (PC and Mac). In 2008, we chose the Kindle. In 2009, it was my book, Unclutter Your Life in One Week (now also in audio format). In 2010, we went with the Intellishred paper shredder (now called the Powershred). And, in 2011, we went off script a little and recommended hiring a professional organizer with a list of recommendations.

After much thought and deliberation, we have decided to return to the world of the physical and suggest a tangible item. Like last year, though, it’s a bit unorthodox. It’s not necessarily something you can unwrap, but I’m sure if you are creative you could find a way to put something wrapable under the tree (like a screw or small piece of it).

The 2012 Ultimate Gift is a closet makeover.

Over the past few months, we’ve become fans of Rubbermaid’s Configurations system for its price (much lower than Elfa’s) and quality. The arrangement options and sizes are numerous, and we believe a well organized closet is a thing of beauty. In addition to bedroom closets and office closets, don’t forget your pantry, coat closet, and supply closets in your garage and/or basement. When uncluttered and organized, these areas can increase functionality significantly, such as with my old “Mary Poppins” closet in our previous house:

Also, the system has attachments like pull-out baskets, chests of drawers, tie and belt valets, angled shoe shelves, sliding pant racks, as well as preassembled kits for your pantry and clothing closets.

This is a gift you would want to consult with the recipient before giving, but I think in many cases it would be very well received. As I mentioned before, it is a non-traditional gift, but non-traditional doesn’t mean bad. A beautiful, new, organized closet would be a truly wonderful way to start the new year.
