Ryan Todd in Warsaw

London-based illustrator Ryan Todd was approached by Asphalt Store, a fixed gear bike and accessories shop in Warsaw, to create an instore installation. He obliged and tips the Polish bike shop as a creative hub worth keeping an eye on…

“There is a really interesting vibe in Warsaw at the moment,” says Todd, “almost like Berlin five to ten years ago in that there are lots of interesting people starting to do interesting things. And these guys at Asphalt, a modest start-up bike shop are amongst those at the heart of it. They’re really interested in forming new collaborations with international artists and encouraging them to create new work in their space.”

Given a carte blanche to create new work, Todd created four light boxes that are displayed in the shop’s windows. “The name of the show is The Other Side of Town,” says Todd, “and each of the icon-like illustrations visualise recognisable objects that all feature peculiarities. Things aren’t quite what they seem.”
