Scientists Succeed in Growing New Bones Using Sound Waves

Using high-frequency sound waves, scientists at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia have managed to grow new bones out of stem cells. Having spent over a decade investigating how sound interacts with different materials, researchers developed a sound wave-generating device that can manipulate cells and fluids. “We can use the sound waves to apply just the right amount of pressure in the right places to the stem cells, to trigger the change process,” says co-lead researcher and professor Leslie Yeo. This innovative feat could crucially help patients who have lost bones to cancer or degenerative diseases—an imperative breakthrough as the current, experimental process requires extracting bone marrow which is expensive and painful. In contrast, this new approach is faster, simpler and more effective. “Our device is cheap and simple to use, so could easily be upscaled for treating large numbers of cells simultaneously,” continues Yeo. Now, the researchers are exploring how to scale their device to treat as many people as possible. Learn more about it at RMIT.

LSD’s Controversial Connection With Alcoholics Anonymous

In a fascinating long-read, Katie McBride at Inverse traces the controversial and little-known connection between LSD and Alcoholics Anonymous. When co-founder and hero of the abstinence-only program, Bill Wilson, dropped acid 66 years ago, he had two decades sober and AA was in full swing. This experience would “fundamentally transform his outlook on recovery, horrify AA leadership and disappoint hundreds of thousands who had credited him with saving their lives.” Despite it being hushed up, Wilson believed that LSD was actually crucial to his ultimate recovery. He wrote in 1957, “I am certain that the LSD experience has helped me very much. I find myself with a heightened color perception and an appreciation of beauty almost destroyed by my years of depression… The sensation that the partition between ‘here’ and ‘there’ has become very thin is constantly with me.” Essentially, the belief centers on the fact that sobriety doesn’t always cure depression. As McBride says, “Mind-altering drugs are not always antithetical to sobriety. Instead, psychedelics may be a means to achieve and maintain recovery from addiction.” Read the full story at Inverse.

“Once-in-a-Lifetime” Roman Mosaic Discovered in London

Archeologists from the Museum of London Archeology recently uncovered the largest Roman mosaic found in the British capital in half a century. Located on a new development in Southwark (that is outside the bounds of what is believed to be Roman Londinium), the mosaic comes from a decorative dining room floor, dating around the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD. Replete with intricate, colorful tiles and geometric designs, the artwork was found alongside jewelry, lavishly painted walls and terrazzo-style floors, suggesting the mosaic stems from a mansio, a roadside resting place for Roman officials. Archeologists also believe a hidden mosaic could lie underneath the first. As the site’s supervisor Antonietta Lerz puts it, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime find in London.” Learn more about it at The Art Newspaper.

New Study Reveals What Fish Talk About

Scientists have found that acoustic communication under the sea is relied upon by fish even more than previously believed. These “boops, honks and hoots” (though some make noises akin to croaks and hums) are “a major mode of communication among fish, rather than just limited to a few oddballs.” Published in the scientific journal Ichthyology & Herpetology, the paper by Cornell University researchers reveals that fish mostly talk about sex and food, and some (like the very chatty codfish) even have different regional accents that could be “strong enough that others in their species may find them hard to understand.” Find out more about these deep conversations at The Guardian.

Rebundle Makes Hair Extensions From Bananas

While commonly used, synthetic hair is toxic for the environment and detrimental to scalp health. Made from fine plastic fibers—like acrylic, polyester and polyvinyl chloride—that are also reliant on fossil fuels, hair extensions often lead to scalp irritation and inflammation. As Black women who rely on these extensions for cornrows and braids, Ciara Imani May and Danielle Washington know this all too well. That’s why they launched Rebundle, a start-up turning banana fibers into plant-based hair. Rebundle also supports farmers by sourcing their extra bananas. Biodegradable, non-toxic and organic, this proprietary hair is not only better for the planet but it is also safer for scalps. Read more about this innovative hair and how Washington and May are revolutionizing the industry at Atmos.

Dana Kearley’s Artwork Explores and De-Stigmatizes Disability and Chronic Illness

Through her bright, cute and cheerful illustrations, Vancouver-based artist Dana Kearley explores and communicates the many nuanced ways that people exist and move through the world with disabilities and illness—de-stigmatizing it along the way. Her works often feature worms, snails and turtles, animals that “symbolize the way some of us move though the world, at a slower pace, but we’re still going in the same direction,” Kearley tells Elfie Thomas at It’s Nice That. Other creatures are used to communicate specific body parts and illnesses—for instance, butterflies are the pelvic bone. Kearley not only explores her own experiences in a “sick and disabled body,” but also hopes to create healing and understanding in others. Read the full interview at It’s Nice That.

Remains of World’s Largest Pterosaur Discovered in Scotland

The earliest animal known to have the ability to fly is the pterosaur. It was commonly believed that during the Jurassic era these reptiles were small in stature but with a wingspan of up to six feet. Now this belief is being overturned. On Scotland’s Isle of Skye, scientists found the remains of Dearc sgiathanach (the name of the world’s largest known pterosaur and flying animal) embedded in limestone in rare completeness, with a wingspan larger than a king-size bed, raising questions about our understanding of pterosaurs and their evolution from the Jurassic period. Further, this creature was still growing at the time of its death. Learn more about the astonishing discovery at USA Today.

Top 10 tech trends of 2022

The onset of 2022 has been pretty interesting as it’s brought with it a storm of mind-boggling and innovative tech trends! At Yanko Design, it’s surely been an exciting time for us, as we came across an influx of intriguing designs that left a lasting impression on our minds. Each design broke through some barrier or convention in the tech world, bringing to us unique solutions, improved functionality, and immense value. From the downpour of tech designs that 2022 introduced to us, we’ve curated some of the very best. From cool Apple-inspired concepts such as an action camera for content creators to innovative AI-enabled products – not only do these designs address tangible problems, but they also make our lives better, easier, and efficient in their own way. We hope these inventive tech gadgets impress you, as much as they impressed us!

1. Apple-inspired Concepts

Since its foundation in 1976, Apple has been always been at the peak of modern innovation! And let’s take a moment to appreciate all the awesome products and inspiration Apple has provided us with. The groundbreaking tech giant never fails to surprise us, we always find ourselves biting our nails and squirming with curiosity, whenever Apple announces a new product launch! Their ingenious and mesmerizing designs and design philosophy have inspired and influenced designers all over the world, resulting in some pretty unique Apple-inspired designs!

The iCam Pro conceptualized by Diego Valdés (aka. Diego Valoro Design) is a miniaturized version of the iPhone 13 – of course with a slightly different utility of documenting extreme experiences. The triple-camera module setup is a detour from the convention of a single potent camera on such sports cameras. This could be a USP for a brand like Apple who’ll foray into a very competitive space dominated mostly by GoPro. The slimmer, more rectangular shape of the action camera will give prospect users the freedom to carry it in the pocket of their jeans without getting uncomfortable. The choice of colors and materials will also play a part in the success of iCam Pro if we happen to ever see one in real life.

2. AI-enabled Designs

Artificial Intelligence has catapulted in recent years, and the advancements being made in this field make me feel as if it won’t be long before we have robots walking amongst us all the time! There was a point in time when the only forms of robots that we could see were toys or vacuum cleaners! But we have come a long long way since then. Most gadgets and tech designs these days are being powered by AI. The world at large is slowly moving away from the perception of robots as evil beings who want to take over the Earth, and accepting that they may have vast and undeniable utility in even our day-to-day lives.

Meet Noa, a detachable phone case that comes with an AI-enabled e-ink screen to learn the user’s response to particular notifications. What I find the most intuitive about Noa’s design is the fact that it can be detached right off the case whenever needed. This in a way physically segregates you from your phone’s inviting notifications to prevent any untimely disruptions without worrying about missing out on what matters to you the most. It can also be used as a kickstand to set up a notifications center and have the phone out of sight. Designer Darren Wells designed it such that it can also send quick replies thanks to the Quick Reply AI, which comes with Summarization AI to organize longer notification messages and automatic scheduling based on the important times and dates in the user’s calendar.

3. Sleek SSDs

SSDs are pretty much becoming the future of storage! SSDs have shoved flash drives, thumb drives, clunky hard disks, and even expensive cloud storage into near extinction. An SSD provides everything they did, except it’s impressively faster, more compact, and convenient, and promises larger capacities. However, a typical SSD design doesn’t raise many eyebrows anymore, hence they’re getting more innovative, unique, and efficient by the day!

Compatible with most USB-C devices, the HybridDrive offsets your need for multiple hubs, dongles, and drives. With a multiport on one end, an SSD on another, and a USB-C interface connecting the two, the HybridDrive bridges the gap between your portable devices (laptop/tablet/phone) and your desktop – in the sense that it gives you extra ports and expandable storage… something most desktops have in common. The multiport setup comprises a 4K 60Hz HDMI port, two USB-A ports with 10Gbps data transfer, a MicroSD card reader, an SD card reader, and a USB-C which supports 100W of power output along with high-speed video and data transferring. On the other end of the HybridDrive is an SSD that comes in 4 sizes, starting from 128Gb and going all the up to a whopping 2Tb.

4. MagSafe Accessories

The reinvention and return of MagSafe became an instant hit! There is a great sense of satisfaction, in my opinion, to have things just stick to your phone. Be it a pair of earphones (maybe that’ll be the next generation of AirPods) or have your phone just conveniently stick to a charging pad – it’s almost like magic! The reintroduction of the MagSafe led to a whole new world of accessories being unleashed! Designers and creatives were racing to create a whole range of products for the repurposed MagSafe.

For geeks who want more than just a standard MagSafe charger for their den, the UFO MagSafe Wireless Charger will be the preferred choice. This cute-looking accessory for the Apple ecosystem is currently just a concept design, but we want to see it make it to the shelves. It’s like a UFO riding on the back of your iPhone 13 minus, all the shenanigans of gimmicky gadgets. The accessory is minimalistic in form and doesn’t go overboard with the spaceship design. UFO MagSafe strikes on first look and doesn’t fade away like other flashy accessories. In fact, it grows on me every time I have a glance at the realistic renders to churn out this write-up.

5. Unique VR Headsets

Immersing ourselves in a simulated world, far away from reality is always fun. And hence, Virtual Reality has been gaining a lot of momentum these days! Its applications and possibilities are endless. VR is extending its scope beyond gaming and providing functionality in a variety of fields. From business, education, entertainment to even fitness, VR is being utilized in almost all industries – especially in the form of cool headsets!

Interestingly the internet is going crazy with the freshly leaked images of the insect eyes like the HTC headset that gives off the futuristic vibe. The person in question is trusted leaker Evan Blass who has posted convincing images of HTC’s next-gen VR headset. The big question arises – will this HTC VR headset be able to compete with Oculus Quest 2? Evan has been posting a constant stream of tweets with photos of the said headset, building anticipation for the tech community. For neutral viewers, these images give a much better idea of what the Vive Flow VR headset will look like. It is not much different than the Project Proton concept headset in terms of the alienating presence.

6. Foldable Screens

Foldable screens are quite honestly taking over the tech world! Whether they’re in the form of smartphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, or even televisions, they’re gaining immense popularity. They are a cutting edge and innovative development in the tech world and are a prediction that these could be the future of screens. On a personal note, I do appreciate them quite a bit, as they do tend to be modular and flexible to various forms! They can function as several gadgets in one go, reducing the need to use and carry around various devices. These foldable screen concepts do exactly that, with a single concept doubling or tripling up as multiple gadgets, for example, a smartphone doubling up as a smartwatch, or as a tablet and laptop.

Codenamed ‘Papyrus’, this foldable phone is able to expand beyond the original display size of the Mi Mix Alpha, owing to two scroll-like mechanisms on its sides. This axle allows Papyrus to occupy various sizes, varying from the size of a small TV remote to a medium-sized tablet. Though it is narrower compared to the original Mi Mix Alpha, Papyrus has three versatile modes; compact, standard, and (wide) tablet. In the compact mode, it completely collapses to occupy a folded position, looking much like a chain of lego blocks or a chocolate bar! In the standard format, it expands further (like a scroll) to reveal the three-lens camera with high resolution on the back. And on giving a final tug to the sides, the scroll mechanisms on the axle allow the OLED screen to expand to a tablet of 7-8 inches or even more.

7. Travel Tech

I love traveling! And although I may not be able to do much of it during this pandemic (although travel is opening up slowly), that doesn’t stop me from daydreaming about it or planning my next vacation in my head. My travel bucket list is brimming to the top with exotic holiday destinations. And, as any experienced traveler (not that I am one…YET) will tell you, having a set of handy and trusty travel tech accessories is essential! These are the nifty little gadgets that can help you out in the most impromptu and sudden of situations, and you’ll never regret having packed them in your suitcase.

An SSD that’s waterproof doesn’t really cater to someone who uses it in an office, and an SSD that has a fingerprint scanner may not matter to someone who uses it to dump videos from a DSLR or a drone. By that yardstick, LAMBOGO knows exactly who its audience is. Designed for the great outdoors, this rugged, waterproof, wireless SSD comes with up to 8TB of storage, has an internal fan to keep the drive and circuitry cool when you’re not in the cushy environment of an air-conditioned office, and lets you wirelessly preview and share files between your devices. LAMBOGO comes with a card slot and a single button interface for quickly dumping data from your DSLR and Drone, and lets you easily preview your files on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or even desktop and edit them on third-party apps… without connecting wires.

8. Futuristic Wearables

Wearable designs are currently in the limelight, and we thought it would be fun to explore one of them! Wearable designs make our lives easier and more efficient in multiple ways! From smartwatches, Fitbits to even wearable furniture, innovative wearable designs can be valuable additions to our daily lifestyles. And, not to mention sometimes they’re really fun to use and trendy to wear as well. Great wearable designs are not only super easy to wear on your person, but also promise to make your everyday life easier, simpler, and effortless

Romware’s bracelet helps to reinforce the social distancing guidelines as more of us return to work. The digital device monitors the employees’ location and warns them if they are too close to each other. Initially designed for industries such as construction, logistic, warehousing, manufacturing, and port services, this bracelet can be used by any large company that cannot function remotely and relies on labor. Whenever employees are closer than 6 feet they will feel a vibration that warns them. The bracelet has a geofencing feature that allows you to set a limit for how many employees can be in a specific area to ensure there are no large gatherings. One of its most effective features is that it enables contact tracing, so if someone does fall sick the employer can easily track anyone who may have been in contact and take necessary measures.

9. Dyson-inspired Designs

Dyson is by far, one of the most innovative companies ever! It transformed our mundane household appliances into intriguing products that make everyday chores an absolute blast. Did you ever think you could care so much about a vacuum cleaner? Me neither! The British tech giant has inspired designers to adopt its unique design language, and create some mindblowing Dyson-inspired products, automotive, appliances, and what not!

Merging an abstract sculptural look with a metallic chrome finish, Stalae is a portable home speaker designed by Lucis Ceng to bring the subtle taste of sculptural work to electronic design. While Stelae’s physical build is reminiscent of a Dyson fan’s, the inspiration for Stelae’s distinct form stems from sculpture work. Standing out from other home entertainment systems, Stelae’s speaker plumes from its circular base into the shape of a feather for a slim design that doesn’t take up too much room on the coffee table. The long tube-like portion of Stelae is also lined with four woofers.

10. Pet-friendly Gadgets

If you’re an obsessive pet owner like me, then you’re probably always thinking of ways to make your pet happy! Ensuring your pet feels safe, secure, and comfortable at home is every pet owner’s priority. We want to make sure they always feel loved and truly at home! It’s important to create an environment where they feel completely safe to let their guard down, while also managing to stay active and playful. Interactive tech designs are one way of keeping our pets busy, content, and jolly! Tech products for pets are a whole new ballgame these days.

Say hello to DogTag – a pet-collar tag designed by the fine folks at Studio Proper that houses an Apple AirTag within it. Designed to work with dogs as well as cats, the DogTag lets you easily keep track of your furry little friend when they’re scampering about outdoors or even playing hide-and-seek with you inside the house. Relying on Apple’s powerful ‘Find My’ network, the DogTag lets you be able to keep track of your pet no matter where they are. You can create no-go zones for them, knowing if and when they scale your fence and jump right into your neighbor’s prized flower-bed… and if they decide to play hooky right before bathing time, you can easily ‘ping’ the AirTag inside the collar to give up your furry little monster’s location, or use the Find Nearby feature to help guide you to them!

Modern design elements update this reinterpretation of a traditional Norwegian boathouse

The Badehus, or Bathhouse, is a modern, minimalist reinterpretation of the traditional Norwegian boathouse with 45-degree angled timber planks that give it a dynamic, semi-enclosed look.

Reinterpreting traditional boathouses to fit in today’s world boils down to making them functional for modern needs without stripping them of their old-world charm. The Norwegian boathouse, or naust as it’s colloquially termed, is traditionally built using one of three methods: gate, timber, or stone construction. While each method typically maintains the same frame shape, each method gives the boathouse a unique finished look.

Designer: Handegård Arkitektur

Handegård Arkitektur tried its hand at reinterpreting the traditional Norwegian boathouse for the 21st century, using an alternative gate construction method. Handegård Arkitektur constructed the Badehus, which translates to Bathhouse, as a tiny retreat to accommodate a small clinker-built boat.

From behind, the Bathhouse appears like a fully-enclosed red boathouse without any windows. A closer look reveals a completely different building. Inside, each facade of the Bathhouse is lined with thin timber planks angled at 45-degrees that open the interior up to the outside. The planks are angled so that the boathouse is enclosed from behind, but entirely open from the front.

This alternative form of gate construction offers some privacy from the outside and then an unfettered view of the sea from the inside. This dramatic transition is exactly the purpose behind the Bathhouse’s modern update as the architects explain, “When you enter, you experience the purpose – you are sheltered at the same time as you have a view of the entire sea.”

Entering the Bathhouse, one large full-swing door leads guests to its modest living area that organizes a minibar and woodfire stove towards the rear of the building. Behind that, a loft bed keeps a space for sleeping and a bathroom can be found in its own area behind a closed door. Just a few steps away, guests can enjoy a spacious lounge area that completely opens up to the sea via two large full-swing doors.

The floor and gabled ceiling remain bright with solid plywood paneling. The gaps formed by the angled timber planks are also covered by narrow acrylic panels that help protect the Bathhouse from the natural elements while still collecting pools of sunlight. Two granite columns and a concrete plinth give rise to a galvanized steel frame, where the Bathhouse rests.

The timber planks open up the interior to the outdoors and add some energy to an otherwise stripped-down retreat.

From behind, the Bathhouse looks entirely enclosed behind the timber planks.

From the other side, the Bathhouse’s angled timber planks open up.

HMM Ballpoint Pen exudes confidence and stability in a fast-changing world

The world has changed radically in the past two years, but one of the things that have remained constant is the need for a reliable and comfortable writing tool exemplified by this distinctive pen.

It almost seems as if we’ve moved to a purely digital realm, with many of our documents and IDs already available in computers, phones, and the cloud. Styluses like the Apple Pencil even make short work of signing documents or sketching ideas with digital ink. Like it or not, it’s impossible to get rid of paper and, consequently, the pen that leaves its mark on it. Some people see pens as trivial, disposable tools, while others regard them as something that should last almost for eternity. The HMM Ballpoint is of the latter, and its design clearly shows it.

Designer: HMM Project

Click Here to Buy Now: $35

Most designer pens come in smooth, cylindrical shapes, glossy finishes, and golden accents here and there. These pens look luxurious and well-refined, delicate, and reserved to be used on special occasions only. In contrast, the HMM Ballpoint pens look raw, almost to the point of being primal. And yet, there’s an ironic beauty in seeing the unbridled power of the pen in its natural form.

The pen comes in two finishes, with RAW exhibiting that naked form best. Its surface is artificially aged through vibration polishing, giving it a well-worn look as if it has seen all the battles between your mind and the blank sheet of paper before you. GUN metal, on the other hand, looks a bit more polished thanks to military-grade hard anodizing, but it still has that aura of a powerful weapon in your fingertips.

Most pens are depicted as perfect cylinders with smooth surfaces, but closer inspection will reveal how many barrels actually have edges to them. The HMM Ballpoint embraces this wholeheartedly with a dodecagonal body that carries the designer’s trademark form. Together with the pen’s texture, this shape allows the user to hold the pen with more confidence to help banish doubts from their minds.

That sense of confidence extends to the material chosen for the pen, an aluminum alloy that speaks of longevity. Writers who often find themselves mindlessly clicking their pens won’t have to fear breaking this pen easily. The HMM Ballpoint is built the way it looks, not as a delicate and rarely used instrument but as a sturdy, stable, and powerful companion that will stick with you through thick or thin. Or at least for as long as SCHMIDT P900M refills exist.

This fluid Alpha Romeo supercar is a testament to Italian design prowess

A concept imagined for Alpha Romeo’s future dominated by powerful electric drivetrains, sublime design sense and dominating road presence, that overshadows any other supercar in the vicinity.

Alpha Romeo is a living example of Italian craftsmanship when we talk of sculpting good-looking four-wheelers. The brand is in a league of its own with the flowing aerodynamic form – left, right and center. For more than a century now, the Italian automotive giant has been thrilling motorheads – creating an unperturbed legacy. Right from the Alfa Romeo 8C series of the early 1930s and the 1750 GT sold through 1977, to the hot Alpha Romeo 33 Stardale, the 8C Competizione that debuted in 2007 or the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio unveiled in 2015.

Designer: Klaus Dahlenkamp

The design language of Alpha Romeo cars is very different from other automotive hotshots around the globe. They lay much emphasis on trending styling, road feedback, and also make use of the latest technology to cocoon the riders in utmost luxury and cozy comfort. Most of all, the brand is propelled forward by the emotion of love as we already saw with the Alfa Romeo GTS concept. Designer Klaus Dahlenkamp wants to better the design with his interpretation of an Alpha Romeo supercar that’s a damsel eager to flaunt its good looks.

The concept has a peculiar resemblance to the Audi Skysphere and the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR. That sharp flowing rear end, long side profile, and futuristic wheels – all coincide with the design cues of the two flamboyant concepts, automotive pundits have highly praised lately. The exhaust on Klaus’ concept design is almost like a pointed “V” – so edgy it could cut a paper in half, literally. The front section has a dominating presence, while the super flowy middle section is highlighted by the all-glass top that’s an extension of the windshield to the rear minus any pillars.  This Alpha Romeo concept gives off the vibe of a unibody creation from the front to the rear end. To add to the flowing design, the electric supercar is all shining in the panoramic glass and metallic finish.

The designer interprets his Alpha Romeo concept in all black or vibrant red skin – that’s been so familiar with the brand’s core DNA all these years. Would we want to see this manifest into reality? The obvious answer is, Yes!

The Apple Arcade Pro is an iPhone-inspired handheld gaming device with two notches and controls

The Apple Arcade app/service may seem like a half-baked effort on Apple’s part to enter the gaming industry. One could argue that Apple doesn’t even care about gamers or gaming beyond the odd Monument Valley or AR-based game that they’ve showcased at their keynotes. However, the Apple Arcade Pro changes ALL of that. Designed as a hardware concept that rivals the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, or any of the Android-based gaming phones, the Apple Arcade Pro is a handheld console modeled on the iPhone, however with not one but TWO notches that allow the console to have its own button layouts.

The Apple Arcade Pro is exactly what the company needs to blitz right into the gaming industry. Google Stadia is on life-support, Microsoft Xbox Game Pass hasn’t quite picked up yet, the Steam Deck hasn’t rolled out to many people yet, and literally the only handheld gaming device that’s really got a stranglehold on the market is the Nintendo Switch… the Arcade Pro has the ability to massively tilt the scales by doing a couple of things – A. Championing mobile-based AAA gaming, B. Putting Apple’s A15 Bionic chip to even better use, and C. Allowing Apple’s Arcade service to expand rapidly in a way that would probably even threaten Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. Sadly though, there’s no way Fortnite is coming back to the Apple gaming ecosystem anytime soon…

The Apple Arcade Pro models itself on the successful iPhone format. It comes with a Stainless Steel body in four different finishes, and sports the same flat-edge design as the iPhone. On the front, however, things are a bit different. There’s no front-facing camera, but the notch is still there. In fact, there are two notches on either side of the device, allowing for the Arcade Pro to have its controls – an ambidextrous set of D-pads that change function depending on what game you’re playing. On the rim, the volume buttons are replaced by left and right shoulder buttons, and the speaker modules now go all the way from one corner to the other, immersing you in audio as you game.

Move over to the back and there’s a bit of a throwback in terms of the camera layout. Instead of equipping the Arcade Pro with the best-quality camera as you’d find in the iPhone, the Arcade Pro instead has an iPhone X-inspired dual-lens system that sits further to the corner, so it doesn’t get obstructed by your hands as you game. In between the two cameras, however, sits a LiDAR sensor that turns the Arcade Pro into the world’s first AR-based dedicated handheld gaming console.

Other noteworthy features of the Arcade Pro are its upgraded Taptic Engine that allows for better haptic gaming, the Magic Joy buttons that mimic the ones seen on the Apple TV remote, 95W MagSafe charging on the back, and a new Game OS, designed specifically to highlight the new gaming experience. The Arcade Pro doesn’t just tap into the Apple Arcade service, it redefines it completely and spins the arcade service into its own standalone service, giving it a dedicated operating system that prioritizes games first, while also offering other features/apps like Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, Safari, etc. Want to take a break from gaming and just use the Arcade Pro to watch content? There’s a Pro Stand-inspired Gravity Stand that lets you prop your device on it and easily enjoy watching stuff online. The concept doesn’t detail whether the Arcade Pro has cellular services (there isn’t a SIM tray anywhere to be seen), although we could go on a limb and say that it’ll still have Messages, although, with a front-facing camera, Memoji and FaceTime seem out of the picture.

Obviously, this is a concept and it’s practically guaranteed that Apple won’t release a gaming console any time soon (although it definitely should, considering how incredibly lucrative the industry is), but for the people who think having an iPhone-inspired gaming device is an illogical idea, let’s not forget that for the longest time Apple did have its own iPhone-shaped device that catered to a specific category – music. The iPod Touch, for years, was an iPhone-lite that did a limited set of tasks focused primarily on music and browsing the internet… so it’s fairly within the bounds of an alternate reality to envision the Arcade Pro as a gaming-specific iPhone.

Is the Arcade Pro a great idea? On paper, it definitely is, given how the gaming industry is bigger than Hollywood, the music industry, the NBA, NFL, and MLB all combined. Apple’s had a long history of sidestepping gaming, but just purely from a revenue standpoint, it makes a world of sense considering Apple can’t even claim it’s a monopoly business here. Moneytalk aside, the Arcade Pro sounds like the PERFECT device for kids… an iPhone Lite, if you will. Apple will have to develop the OS in a way that enables incredibly rigid parental controls for youngsters, but the Arcade Pro has the potential of not just being a gaming device – it also becomes the communication device parents feel comfortable giving their kids and allowing them to keep in touch… without splurging the big bucks on buying a kid an iPhone.

ByFusion ByBlocks can eliminate the global plastic crisis

If you grew up watching Wall-E, you will probably be reminded of the garbage cubes when you see this project by ByFusion. The ByBlock is an environment-friendly building block that can be used in different projects and construction. We have heard of similar ideas before, just like the one in the Disney-Pixar movie, but it’s only now that we are finally seeing such an idea come to life.

ByFusion is a startup that spent several years in Research and Development to come up with ByBlock. Each block is a combination of plastic and nonrecyclables. The company used steam and compression to shape the blocks to use for simple construction like maybe a fence or terrace.

Designer: ByFusion

BUILDING WITH BYBLOCK Design

Using a patented technology known as Blockers, each ByBlock is a result of many plastic materials being squeezed. It doesn’t require cleaning or sorting—just like in the movie. In this case, the Blockers are doing WALL-E’s job. Each ByBlock is giving plastic waste a brand new life. With this effort, plastic garbage will someday be reduced. All types of plastic waste can be used to build one piece of ByBlock. It goes through zero-waste process so it’s really sustainable.

ByBlock ByFusion Details

ByBlock

A ton of plastic can make one ton of ByBlocks. It’s also easy to use as no adhesives or glues are required—not even specialized labor. As described, the ByBlocks won’t crumble or crack. This revolutionary creation has the potential to be used in different construction projects while helping the environment clean up and reduce waste.

All those plastic materials will no longer be wasted. It’s definitely environment-friendly as it doesn’t need any chemicals or fillers. ByFusion is also partnering with several corporations, municipalities, governments, and recycling facilities. The more groups working together to reduce/reuse/recycle, the better is the future of waste management for Mother Earth.

BUILDING WITH BYBLOCK System

BUILDING WITH BYBLOCK Sustainable

A blocker, by definition, prevents something to happen. But the Blocker used by ByFusion doesn’t inhibit anything, instead, it transforms waste into something useful. On the other hand, you can also say a Blocker is instrumental now in inhibiting plastic to be further wasted.

BUILDING WITH BYBLOCK Blocker

ByFusion describes the Blocker as a game-changer. The patented system can be implemented and used by other partners and local governments to put the garbage under control. Little by little, the whole process will help reduce the plastic crisis not just in one city but the whole world.

ByBlock ByFusion Design

Repurposing waste is being done but ByFusion is doing it right. Plastic waste being put to work is definitely a great thing. You can say it is the ultimate landfill divergent solution as ByFusion sees it. We can agree this effort helps protect our planet and everything in it—the wildlife, waterways, and the oceans. The world will soon be rid of plastic waste if this ByFusion ByBlocker system becomes widely available.

Contemporary Portraiture by Black Artists at LA Art Week 2022

Powerful highlights from Frieze Los Angeles, Felix Art Fair and Spring/Break Art Show

As Frieze Los Angeles, Felix Art Fair, Spring/Break Art Show and dozens of galleries, as well as art, design and fashion pop-ups, welcomed an international swathe of guests to LA, every exhibitor had the opportunity to present powerful pieces. Amidst towering and transportive works at the three fairs, and the transgressive and thought-provoking pieces elsewhere (including Martine Syms‘ kinetic digital installation for Prada Mode, entitled “HelLA World“), there were several paintings that stood out for their take on contemporary portraiture. The following seven painted works by Black artists celebrate, honor and commemorate Black figures—and they do so with distinct vision.

Kenechukwu Victor at Felix

Nigerian artist Kenechukwu Victor‘s large-scale painting “Music to my ears III” (2021) found a place on a door at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, where the Felix Art Fair took place. Presented by Athens’ The Breeder, the oil-on-canvas work pauses a moment in time, where a figure stands holding an iPod and florals affixed to a walking stick.

Phumelele Tshabalala at Felix

Johannesburg, South Africa-based fine artist Phumelele Tshabalala‘s “Nokhanya from the Lineage of Grace” (2022) is a bright and mesmerizing work of layered imagination. Presented by NYC-based Lyles & King at Felix, the exuberant large-scale painting incorporates acrylic, oils, collage and embellishments on wood. Through his subject matter, Tshabalala explores Black identity, resistance and expression.

Nina Chanel Abney at Frieze

NYC-based fine artist (and longtime CH favorite) Nina Chanel Abney presented “Outdoor Dining #2” (2022) outside of Jack Shainman Gallery‘s booth at Frieze. The large-scale work, composed of acrylic and spray paint on canvas, carries many of the acclaimed artist’s stylistic signatures, from form to color.

Tyler Ballon at Frieze

One of the most beloved works exhibited at Frieze Los Angeles this year, Tyler Ballon‘s “Milestones” (2022), an oil-paint-on-canvas work, was presented by Jeffrey Deitch. It’s a tender portrait, with framing that contrasts the past and present.

Devan Shimoyama at Felix

At Felix, Philadelphia-born fine artist Devan Shimoyama displayed “Waning Kiss” (2021) which incorporated glitter and rhinestones into a work of oil and acrylic on canvas. The sparkling and textured figurative work, presented by Chicago-based Kavi Gupta, adheres to Shimoyama’s quest to increase representation of beauty, in particular for Black and queer people.

Amoako Boafo at Frieze

Accra, Ghana-born and Vienna, Austria-based fine artist Amoako Boafo displayed the exquisite “Tilted Head (White Shirt)” (2021) with LA-based Roberts Projects at Frieze. There’s an intimacy to the oil-on-canvas work, and the visible brush strokes lend a contemplative depth of texture.

Hubert Neal Jr at Spring/Break Art Show

At Spring/Break Art Show, LA’s IV Gallery exhibited the “Black & Blue” series by Belize-born, Chicago-based artist Hubert Neal Jr, composed of paintings depicting the deaths of Black people at the hands of police. Not only was the powerful, often overwhelming presentation one of the best at this particular show, it was one of the most important to be shown in LA all week.

Two Face analog and smartwatch must be flipped to switch the watch mode

The meaning of two-faced is the kind of friend you don’t want to have. The double-dealing and devious definition of the word is something you don’t ever want to meet or be close to in your lifetime. But the word gets another meaning with this Two Face Smartwatch. You guess it right: the watch has two faces.

Oh no, you won’t really see two faces or dials at once. This watch keeps the analog function and also offers smartwatch features. Whether analog or digital or a smartwatch, each type offers different advantages. Many people still prefer analog watches because they want to keep traditions. Such watches can also have higher values, but smartwatches can offer more functionalities.

Designers: Junguk Shin, Euikyun Koh, and Dawn BYSJ

Two Face Analog Smartwatch Design

The Two Face is an analog and smartwatch in one. It looks like an analog watch but comes with a number of smartwatch features. Inspired by the idea of flipping a coin, you can switch the face if you want to use either the analog or the smartwatch side. The watch features a strap that connects the body. The watch face acts as a hinge that switches the analog and smartwatch. You can flip to whatever side depending on your need at the moment.

Like a classic analog watch, the Two Face boasts a smooth round dial. The other side offers the same smooth touchscreen experience most smartwatches offer. The concept design was from several years ago but it remains a timeless project that may be considered for production. It may probably not sell as much as more modern smartwatches but the one-of-a-kind timepiece can be sought after by modern watch collectors.

Two Face Analog Smart Watch Wireless Charger

Two Face is designed by South Korean designers Junguk Shin, Euikyun Koh, and Dawn BYSJ. It is designed to work with a wireless charger. You simply remove the watch from the strap and attach it to a wireless charger. Once attached to the charger, it looks like a pocket watch from decades ago but with a more modern and seamless look and feel.

The Two Face watch literally has two faces and each side shows the watch type. We’re just interested in its real thickness. It appears thin as per the rendered images but since there are two watch mechanisms, it should be thicker.

The designers presented the analog dial in different colors. It’s not impossible to have several color options. What techie lovers will look at are the specs and features of the smartwatch. We’re assuming it can run most wearable OS available and have the basic smartwatch functionalities.
