Superhero-inspired Airship

The Sting R12 looks like something straight out of a sic-fi movie, and that’s because it was widely inspired by Marvel-Shield’s Quinjet aircraft. The vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) craft was designed for both military and civilian uses ranging from reconnaissance to short-range transit. At the heart of the design are horizontal stabilizers found on either side of the wings. These, in combination with static dual jet engines, make it highly maneuverable and able to go anywhere a chopper goes.

YD gets naked with the 2015 Yamaha FZ-07

Yamaha brought YD’s Troy Turner to Seattle to put the all new 2015 FZ-07 to the test in a mixed landscape of urban riding and wide-open back roads! Hit the jump to see it in action and find out why it’s the ultimate naked sports bike under $7k.

The beauty of Yamaha’s new 2015 FZ-07 is that it exists in the in-between. It fulfills a unique gap in the market by forgiving newbies while still offering challenges to those who are more experienced. Again with the in-between, riders who have been off a bike for far too long will find it to be the perfect catalyst to a renewed thrill addiction. No matter which category you fall in, everything about the FZ-07 riding experience is a reminder of our common ground: that riding is a way to leave your worries in the dust (literally) and escape to what we truly enjoy.

Now for the GUTS! Relax… or don’t. That’s the magic of the FZ-07′s all new 689cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin engine with 4 valves per cylinder, Yamaha’s unique Crossplane Concept 270° crank and 50.2 ft/lbs of torque. It’s torquey, alright.  Fun, but entirely manageable whether you’re dodging commuter traffic or testing twisties in the mountains which you’ll be doing as often as possible. With a wet weight of only 397 pounds, it’s nimble and easy to flick. — You can read up more on Yamaha’s Crossplane Concept 270° crank here, but it’s worth mentioning that it’s these innovative innards that give it unparalleled linear throttle response. It’s smooth as butter whether you’re down low on the street or revving through the canyons. — So what does all this amount to? Well, it’s elementary my dear Watson. (So don’t forget to check out the complete specs below the photos.) But more importantly, it’s confidence. The engines character is such that the rider can have a complete blast, make some mistakes along the way, and keep learning the ins and outs of this beloved machine for a good while. I know, I know… YOU’RE probably a pro, so you’ve got it mastered before you’ve ridden it, right!? Trust Yamaha that you don’t. There’s no boredom to be had here. You’ll be saying “did it really just do that?” before you can get your breath back.

In the looks department there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly for every bike. So, before I rant, you should know something about me. I’m naked. All. Day. Every. Day. I have 3 naked style bikes in the garage. That’s because, aside from the riding style, I think it’s a challenge to make something so stripped-down look good. But when it’s right, it’s right. The point being… I’m particularly particular when it comes to getting naked.  — Overall, the FZ-07 succeeds in dimensions that not only make sense aesthetically but also functionally for riders of various size. The seat looks great with its extreme taper. Riders with short legs will applaud, but anyone with big, muscular, manly legs (me) will feel just a little uneasy about where to put everything. A built in gas tank cover is a HUGE plus. No more ugly aftermarket junk! It fits, better yet, it works. The headlight is quirky and cool, positioned a good distance below where you’d expect it and counterbalancing the profile for a more aggressive look. Swingarm is beautifully designed… no, it’s actually designed to be beautiful unlike most. The meter is whirly and twirly when you light up. Typical of modern meters, but atypical in that it is actually stupidly simple to operate. You can actually switch between MPG, trip, odo without getting lost. Who knew… it only took two buttons! 10 spoke cast aluminum wheels- can’t go wrong there. — Some minor negatives are faux carbon accents that take away from the idea of a no-frills bike. Mixed metal finishes seem a bit schizophrenic. A few little things here and there, but nothing you can’t adjust… especially when you’ve got all that extra cash lying around after the more than reasonable price of just $6,990. BTW, that’s an average of over $1000 less than its competitors including the Monster 696, NC700x, Ninja 650 and SFV650. Plenty of cushion to choose from an expansive lineup of accessories from stylized accent pieces to rear racks and saddlebags.

Now, for your viewing pleasure… some shots from our test ride:

Lego Minifigures hacked with Sugru to create iPhone cable holders

Lego Minifigures can be hacked to create holders for iPhone charging cables, Sugru users have discovered.

The new use for the figures was discovered by Andreas, a Sugru customer in Germany, who found that the figures’ hands were exactly the right size to grip a range of cables.

Lego and Sugru cable holders

By combining the figures with Sugru – a mouldable synthetic rubber that can be used to repair and customise objects – Andreas invented a new way of tidying cables on his desk.

Lego and Sugru cable holders

“Since I discovered this by accident it’s my way of organising things around my desk,” said Andreas.

Lego and Sugru cable holders

Andreas uploaded his discovery to Sugru’s online gallery last month and since then users around the world have adopted the idea, according to Sugru founder Jane ni Dhulchaointigh.

Lego and Sugru cable holders

“Since we shared the project on Twitter, we’ve been getting more and more pics of people copying it,” she said. “It’s so cool to see all the different characters and locations.”

Lego and Sugru cable holders

She added: “In the office we all have Lego Minifigures holding our cables now, so that they don’t keep slipping down under the desk. They seem to be standing to attention and have a new purpose in life.”

Lego and Sugru cable holders

The cable holder is the latest product hack created with Sugru. Speaking at Dezeen’s Designed in Hackney event in London two years ago, ni Dhulchaointigh explained how members of the British fencing team used the product to customise their foils; and showed how a father created a drop-proof digital camera for his three-year-old child.

Lego and Sugru cable holders

“It’s designed to help people repair almost anything and it sticks to almost anything,” she said at the event, describing how she invented the product while studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

Lego and Sugru cable holders

“I saw it as a space-age rubber that would enable the whole world to adapt, modify and repair things,” she said, explaining her belief that Sugru could help consumers create “a new generation of products”.

Google's "Material Design" Approach to Interface Design, and the Hell of Providing Tech Support to Your Mom Over the Phone

0googlematerial.jpg

An interface design is not successful just because you can figure out how to work it. The true test is whether you can explain to your parents, over the phone, how to work it. For any of you who have served as de facto tech support for your folks in this manner, this spot-on video by comedian Ronnie Chieng will be the funniest thing you’ll see all week:

YouTube is of course a Google product, and they’ve got a lot more to worry about than how to delete comments—namely, their Android mobile OS intended for the next generation of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and Glass. To that end, the Google Design site aims to spread the gospel of their design approach while laying down guidelines for those looking to operate within the Googleverse.

They’ve coined their approach to interface design “Material Design.” By this they mean that interface design ought mimic the design of something involving a physical material. This does not refer to skeuomorphism, like Apple’s scuttled faux-stitched-leather etc.; ratherm they mean that physical materials have easily comprehensible properties and that this predictability ought be emulated. You can pick a piece of paper up, flip it over, fold it in half, write on one side, write on the other. It does not zoom around your desk on its own nor spontaneously change color, but instead obeys the laws of physics and your physical manipulations.

Small tips to save time and effort

As far as organizing tips are concerned, these are hardly the most revolutionary. However, implementing simple tricks and devices like these you can ultimately save yourself time, effort, and frustration over the longterm.

Window Clings

Use transparent Window Clings to attach parking pass stickers to your car windows. This will save you time from having to later scrape them off. If your jurisdiction requires permanent car licence or registration stickers, please abide by those requirements. Colourful Window Clings can be used to stick to the bathroom mirror to remind children to wash their hands or brush their teeth.

Iron-On Nametags

Schools, daycares, and camps often require that children’s clothing be labeled with their names. Rather than order pre-printed, iron-on labels and wait for them to arrive by post, make your own with iron-on tags from Avery. You can even add a small picture beside the name for children just learning to read. They also pull-off nicely when it’s time to donate your child’s clothing to charity or to use as a rag.

Address Labels

Pre-print address labels and use them for anything that has to be repetitively labeled, such as:

  • Envelopes of lunch money and other correspondence for the children’s teachers
  • Envelopes for babysitter’s payment
  • School/work notebooks with your name and phone number
  • Anyone to whom you regularly send correspondence: parents, children, bill payments.

When you print them at home, you also determine what information you wish to provide on the label. Besides your address, you may want to have your name and email address only or name and cell phone number.

Receipts and Warranties

If you buy an item that has a warranty, staple the purchase receipt inside the front cover of the instruction booklet. If you need to return the item, you will be able to find the original receipt. Also, write the model and serial number of your item on the inside of the cover of the instruction book. Store your instruction/warranty booklets in your filing cabinet or a filing box or a magazine file. If your items are ever stolen or damaged (fire, flood), you will have proof of ownership for your insurance company if you also take a scan of this information or a digital image with your smart phone and have an online backup.

Business Cards

If your doctor sends you for tests at a private clinic, always get a business card from the clinic. On the back of the business card write the type of exam that you had and the date of the exam. Keep the business card in your Health file in your filing cabinet. You will always be able to request the necessary information if another doctor asks for it. You can do the same with other businesses and service providers, as well.

Label Leftovers

Purchase a package of small removable stickers and clip them to your fridge. Whenever you put leftovers in the fridge, write the date on a sticker and stick it onto the container of leftovers. This way, everyone in the family will know how long the container has been in the fridge and when it should be thrown out. Check out Still Tasty to learn about the best way to store leftovers and how long they should be kept.

Are there any simple tips and tricks you’ve developed to save time, effort, and frustration? Share them with Unclutterer readers in the comments.

Project 42: A Summer School for Tweens to Explore Potential Futures

MD_A_Project42_00.jpg

Schools kill creativity. This simple message was the point of Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talk, now the most viewed of all time. Robinson challenges the way we view education in todays society, and highlights the fact that it hasn’t developed in the speed that it needs to, but is stuck in the old way of thinking.

The talk was released in 2006. And while much has changed since then (how many of you are now reading this on a smartphone or a tablet?), our schools have remained dully familiar. In the UK, things have arguably got worse, with unpopular figure Michael Gove damning progressive education as a ‘misplaced ideology’ and swinging the curriculum back towards good old traditional methods.

MD_A_Project42_01.jpg

Four students at Royal College of Art in London have decided to do address this issue by developing a summer program where kids can enjoy thinking and learning in different ways. Project 42 is expressly intended for creative learners (ages 9–12) who really don’t fit into the framework of today’s educational institutions. The program will take place between July 28 and August 8 at the Royal College of Art. Why Project 42? Well, according to the one the founders, Ed Tam:

The name is inspired by the book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In the story, a supercomputer was tasked to find the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything. Millennia had passed and the computer came back with the answer 42. But the people soon realized that it’s going to take a much bigger, more complex computer to arrive at the question. Project 42 was set up to help young people discover the power of the question.

Expanding Power

The Fit In Battery not only resolves the issue of removing a battery from its slot but also expanding to suit A size to AAA and AA sizes as well. Resizing of batteries has been of interest for many years and designers keep innovating on the form and function. The real question here is, when will the makers adopt any of these concepts, or are we really done with the round shape forever?
