Shane Chen is a Washington-based inventor obsessed with moving the human body. His company, Inventist, has been developing strange-looking personal transportation devices for nearly a decade. We took a brief look at his Solowheel a few years ago, and it finally went on sale just last year. Check it out:

For those looking to burn some calories, Inventist’s Orbit Wheel is user-powered:

A Car Without Compromise

This bizarre (and awesome!) concept car might look outlandish with its exaggerated proportions, odd stance, and overall indulgent aesthetic… but then again, I just described every other Mercedes too! But the Mercedes Giuseppe is dfferent- it’s an F1 racing machine that, over-the-top as it looks, was designed in every detail to minimize air resistance. With independent winged front arms that adjust width and a flexible body that changes with the track, this thing wants to do one thing… WIN.

ZIPcycle

ZIPcycle is the next evolution of the bicycle, aerodynamically optimized for less exertion & higher cruising speeds. In short, the rider gets more output with less input! The position of the rider is streamlined & elements are enclosed with fairings to greatly reduce drag; so much so that about 40% less energy is required to maintain a cruising speed of 20MPH (double the average commuting speed). The ergonomic riding stance also reduces handlebar strain & seat pressure… all this & riders still get an open-air experience!

ADDITIONAL FEATURES:

-Monocoque aluminum chassis;

-Linked steering mechanism, connecting the handlebar to the steering tube and front wheel fork (a mechanism found in underseat steering recumbent bicycles)

-Hub shifting in the rear wheel to accommodate the necessary gearing range

-Lubricated bearings, gears, and chains enclosed within the chassis in an internal driveshaft beam (so you will never again get grease on your clothes)

-Hollow tail-box, accessible by tilting the ventilated seat forward, spacious enough for a medium sized bag

-Option for an in-hub motor an lithium ion battery pack to provide hill and acceleration assist functions for cyclists in hilly and mountainous regions

On the Anniversary of V-E Day, Buick Releases Photos of “The Hot Rod of World War II”

Today marks “V-E Day,” the day that World War II ended in Europe. And in a couple of weeks, it will be the 110th anniversary of Buick. To tie both anniversaries together, the automaker has released photos of the most fearsome Buick to ever come off the production line: The M18 Hellcat, a World-War-II-era tank destroyer.

buick-hellcat-m18-002.jpg

In 1942, the last civilian Buick rolled off of the production line, and the factory immediately began retooling for war. Like much of American industry, GM had earlier been tasked with supporting the war effort, and when the tasks were divvied up Harley Earl’s design studio found themselves with an unusual design assignment: Forget the Roadmaster—we need something that can kill enemy tanks.

Earl and his team came up with the Hellcat, a bad-ass nine-cylinder, 450 horsepower vehicle that weighed 20 tons. (For scale, a Roadmaster of the era weighed about two tons.) Despite the weight, the Hellcat had a top speed of over 60 miles per hour thanks to its engines, which were actually designed to power airplanes.

“The Hellcat was considered the hot rod of World War II,” says Bill Gross, an historian with M18 restoration experience. “And Buick engineers also made it quiet by tank standards, so it was very successful at getting in, hitting a target, and getting out. To give perspective, most German tanks of the day were capable of just 20 mph and even today’s M1 Abrams tank is outpaced by the Hellcat.”

The Ultimate Roadtrip-Mobile

The EV X-O concept is a family-focused vehicle inspired by the group road trips we all experienced as kids. The exoskeleton of the car offers a near-seamless panoramic view for passengers so they can fully take in the surroundings. The cockpit is even divided into two sections to keep bickering kids apart!

The center of this 100% electric vehicle has two hulls that not only offer the rigidity and support needed for safety, but also accommodate the energy cells that power the vehicle. While the front wheels are propelling the vehicle, the rear wheels are recharging the cells through friction. Even though a direct 1-to-1 discharge to recharge is next to impossible, the Recharge is approximately 15%, giving more efficiency to the overall distance traveled.
Lightweight construction materials like aluminum, titanium, magnesium, carbon fiber, and lexan, are an essential in creating a lighter vehicle.  The design eliminates as much of excess material as possible, leaving only a cockpit and exoskeleton of a chassis behind. Furthermore, a lighter full-electric engine provides additional weight savings over a conventional petrol engine.

A light and airy exoskeletal aesthetic offers a different approach to the passenger experience. It has an artistic influence based on minimalism that is expressed even down to the seams of the exterior. Though you may not be able to see the overall body lines of the car, they are still there. This airiness also flows into the wheels, where there is plenty of negative space. The design was inspired by spoked bicycle wheels where lightness is key.

Another feature of the vehicle is its drive train, where a linear motor system is utilized. The front wheels have a series of linear motors that force discs on the wheel forward or backwards depending on the magnetic pull of the motors.

Introducing, the disposable car!

The “carDboard” concept vehicle is a militantly minimal coupe with no door, no dashboard, no hard roof, & it only comes in one color (so you’d better like brown!). The chassis & body are composed of entirely of recycled cardboard & plastic, making it extremely lightweight & efficient with its small tri-hybrid gas/compressed-air/electric engine. Its projected top speed would reach somewhere around 70MPH, but it’s better suited for just a quick zip around town. Just try to avoid rain & puddles!
