Inside IDEO Founder David Kelley’s Ettore Sottsass-Designed Home

In a recent 60 Minutes segment, Charlie Rose and producer Katherine Davis profiled IDEO co-founder David Kelley (and revealed that even Steve Jobs himself struggled in getting AT&T to activate one of the first iPhones). This part of the piece, in which Rose pays a visit to Kelley’s Ettore Sottsass-designed home near Palo Alto, ended up on the cutting room floor, but CBS has released it as an online extra. “It’s supposed to be a humble, private house, where you don’t make a big deal out of it,” Kelley tells Rose. “That’s why it’s so plain on the front.” Sottsass studded the living room with bluish green boxes, to break up the space and make it more cozy. Here, Kelley reveals what’s inside them. Plus, his teenage daughter has an entire little (Monopoly-style) house to herself. Notes Kelley, “Ettore thought that if you were a kid you should have your own house rather than your own room.”

“Designers should be more entrepreneurial” – Tom Hulme at Dezeen Live

IDEO UK design director Tom Hulme advocates that “designers should be more entrepreneurial” and design every part of a business in this movie we filmed as part of the Dezeen Live series of talks at 100% Design during London Design Festival.

Hulme discusses the ideas that designers should be open and willing to collaborate, as well as using new platforms for promotion. ”I’m always concerned when I see designers that are not prepared to put stuff out in the wild,” he says. “In the past we were forced to cart around portfolios because the barrier to do anything else was enormous, but publications like [Dezeen] are giving people visibility.”

“The tools are becoming accessible to be creative around how you sell stuff, marketing, branding. I think designers can do that like never before,” he adds.

Hulme built a company around an engineering component he designed that is now used in Ferrari Formula One cars (above). He also shares the rest of his professional journey during the talk, from car brand Marcos where he found it easier to become managing director than designer, to working on new ideas for flip-flop brand Havaianas, and finally becoming design director of design consultancy IDEO UK.

Dezeen Live was a series of discussions between Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs and a number of designers and critics that took place at trade show 100% Design during this year’s London Design Festival. Over the next few weeks we’ll be posting all the movies we filmed during the talks.

The music featured in the movie is a track called Black Widow by east London band Strong Asian Mothers. You can listen to more of their music on Dezeen Music Project.

Call for Entries: The Living Climate Change Video Challenge

Design 21 and IDEO have joined forces to host the Living Climate Change Video Challenge.

For details see below:

From Press Release:
Looking to inspire new choices through positive, design-centered thinking, IDEO – a global design and innovation firm – launched the Living Climate Change initiative last fall. Its goal is to extend the dialogue beyond policy and politics and toward inspiring, human-centered scenarios that create new possibilities for business and society. Now IDEO is partnering with DESIGN 21 – a popular online platform topromote design for the greater good – to create the Living Climate Change Video Challenge. People of all ages are asked to craft videos that envision a sustainable future as society moves along the path toward reduced carbon emissions.

“Living Climate Change is an open invitation to designers and non-designers alike to think creatively about an issue that impacts us all,” says Jennifer Leonard, IDEO designer and co-editor of Livingclimatechange.com. “Our hope is that it will stimulate the kind of dialogue that creates community, supports optimism and inspires new choices.”

According to DESIGN 21 Founder, Haruko Smith, “We are thrilled to partner with IDEO on this social design project because we both believe that smart design can solve real-world problems on a global scale.” Smith adds, “As a joint venture between Felissimo and UNESCO, DESIGN 21 is guided by the premise that education, science, technology, and culture are critical tools to disseminate knowledge, create awareness and foster dialogue. Hopefully, this discussion will motivate designers
to rethink the future.”

Thanks Christine for the heads up.

Gary Hustwit’s “Objectified” film

Gary Hustwit, the director known for his documentary film on the Swiss typeface, Helvetica, has just released a first glimpse of his latest work. He’s spent considerable time interviewing product design’s heads of state and put together Objectified.

I’m especially inspired because in just 90 seconds of preview, there were a few familiar faces. David Kelley, a co-founder of IDEO, is an alumnus from my graduate program and is a major part of the Stanford Design program and d.school. We have had the pleasure of visiting his incredible home, which was designed by Ettore Sottsass, and saw the garage, which houses part of his collection of fantastic vehicles. Bill Moggridge is another co-founder of IDEO and is lauded as a founder of interaction design. He’s the author of a book on the subject and we’ve had the honor of his company over beers in the courtyard in front of our workspace. I can’t wait to see this film.
