interaction_awards.jpegjury.jpeg

We can’t believe there’s less than one week left before this year’s Interaction Awards entry period closes! And as you IxDA members busily ready your entries, we are proud to announce that Adobe Typkit has joined in on the fun as a sponsor. Their involvement will help support the costs of this year’s Interaction Awards jury session in New York City, as well as the subsequent documentaries highlighting this year’s Interaction Awards winning work.

Check out the Interaction Awards website for some great pointers from last year’s winners on how to create an award-winning entry. We like the tip from Michal Pasternak of Huge to “Just Do It!” and Best in Show 2012 winner Stimulant (Loop Loop for Sifteo Cubes) shares why awards are like weight loss to help inspire and motivate you to get your entries in!

And if you want a taste of what the jury members Marc Rettig, Founder & Principal at Fit Associates (USA), Steve Baty (Australia), Matt Cottam (The Netherlands), Liz Danzico (USA), Matias Duarte (USA), Dan Hill (Finland) and Anab Jain (UK) might have to contend with, see the below short film covering last year’s jury deliberations.

Remember, the last day to enter the IxDA’s Interaction Awards is on Monday, October 1st. We’ll be live at the Interaction Awards celebrations at the IxDA Conference in Toronto this coming January and we look forward to seeing you all there!

One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Design Challenge

SYTC.jpg

New York residents are generally pretty savvy about waste management companies’ rules for putting out recycling—glass and plastics in transparent bags, newspaper and cardboard bundled—and I remember seeing (somewhat baffling) rows of recycling bins in Tokyo, but it requires diligence on a broad scale. Hence, statistics such as: “The average Dane generates about 624 kg of waste per year [but only] 12% of the daily waste is recycled.”

SYTC-Plastic.jpg

Cause for concern though this may be, the situation also presents an opportunity. Denmark’s largest waste mangement company Vestforbrænding is partnering with Join.dk to hold an international design competition to motivate Danes to “Sort Your Trash Can.”

The brief? To create a “version of a user-friendly sorting-can that fits the private Danish household.” Entries will be judged on five criteria: behavior change, design communication, flexibility, context and functionality.

…citizens are not just citizens. They are a collection of very diverse people with different needs. There are large families and small families, single people, older people and some with special needs. Some people need big bins, others need small bins. Some citizens would like to have their garbage cans out of sight, while others want to flash their environmental awareness. Some want their trash out by the garage, others want it right outside the kitchen window.

SYTC-glass.jpg

But there’s a twist, of sorts: the community is encouraged to comment, tossing out ideas for a chance to win additional prizes such as an iPad 3.

The ideal process is to upload a brainstorm sketch of your initial thoughts as early as possible, while end users, Vestforbænding and everybody else on Join.dk can give suggestions for improvements of your idea. If lots of people like and comment on your design or idea and you also implement modifications, your design will get more positive attention.

A Mobile Chair for New York City: The Battery Conservancy Americas Design Competition Draw Up a Chair

battery-chair-banner.jpeg

Sitting on a public bench in any number of New York City’s increasing green spaces is a revelation. For one, the diversity of these settings has become a hallmark for both residents and visitors to the City. Public benches come in the form of wooden chaise loungers on the abandoned railroad tracks of the Highline, Ignacio Ciocchini’s sleek laser-cut stainless steel CityBench popping up along Broadway, the iconic wooden slatted NYC Park benches in the solitude of Central Park or the more recent sprouting of cafe tables and folding chairs in the public plazas taking over the streets of New York.

battery-map.jpeg

Here’s your chance to be part of a great New York City tradition. The Battery Conservancy has announced a design competition for innovative, portable outdoor seating for The Battery. The 25-acre green space on the south tip of Manhattan overlooking New York Habor welcomes six million tourists annually. Juried by MoMA’s Paola Antonelli, the Campana Brothers, The New York TimesAllison Arieff, Founder of Design Within Reach and CEO of Public Bikes Rob Forbes, and Co-Founder and Director of Grupo de Diseño Urbano Mario Schjetnan, finalists work will be prototyped and showcased at the Design Miami/ fair. The winner will be awarded a US$10,000 prize and their design will be fabricated for use in the park. As Adrian Benepe, New York City Parks & Recreation Commissioner explains:

New York City is known for its innovative landscapes and we look forward to improving Battery Park with a great new design for outdoor seating. The Battery is New York City’s birthplace and as the original waterfront park, it has long served as a social hub and a place of arrival for newcomers. This creative competition will highlight ideas on how we can continue capturing the spirit of one of New York City’s most cherished landscapes and meeting places.

Bullrun Rally 2012

Intrepid drivers cover 3,500 miles with over $7,000 in traffic tickets for a first-place finish

Bullrun-LA-1.jpg Bullrun-LA-2.jpg

More than just an excuse to take your super-car from the track to the open road, the Bullrun Rally is an eight-day adventure putting driving abilities, navigational skills and overall gravitas to the test. Started in 2004 with a cross-country, “Cannonball Run”-style inaugural race stretching from LA to Miami, the grueling competition winds across the US each year carving a unique route held secret until the race is actually underway. As the rules go, anyone with a car and the $20,000 entrance fee can enter—but while the buy-in covers luxurious accommodations, meals and even luggage transfer, without a quick wit and superior sense of direction teams aren’t likely to get far.

Now in its eighth year, the rally route has once again evolved to what has been dubbed the West Coast Loop for 2012. Covering more than 3,500 miles, this year’s Bullrun Rally set off in LA on 22 June, leading 100 cars north through Oregon, back down into Nevada and ending in LA again.

Bullrun-2012-3.jpg Bullrun-2012-4.jpg

Reaching the final check point of the 2012 rally on 29 June, Tony King and Seth Rose became the first team to win back-to-back rallies as well as the first team to win twice with the same members. Pushing a heavily modified 800hp 2009 Nissan GT-R at speeds upward of 200mph, The team fought inclement driving conditions, rogue police and excessively aggressive drivers on this year’s route up and down the California coast. Contrary to the more widely publicized car rallies that flaunt extravagant parties, flamboyant rides and inexperienced drivers, Bullrun celebrates honest competition through expert navigation with a general sense of camaraderie for what Rose feels is just “one hell of a good time.”

First introduced to Bullrun in 2009 by sheer happenstance, King (founder and creative director of digital agency King and Partners) responded to a forum post on Rose’s NYC-based Exotics Rally website regarding the last-minute opportunity to run that year’s rally. The “blind date” as Rose jokingly recalls led the two strangers on a three day trial that planted the seed for success. After getting their feet wet in 2009, the two returned in 2010 for a fourth-place finish, followed by consecutive wins in 2011 and 2012.

Bullrun-2012-6.jpg Bullrun-2012-8.jpg

While Rose drove, King navigated the car, suped up with top-of-the-line tech—streaming wi-fi, multiple iPads, go-pro cameras, radar detectors, binoculars. As King puts it, “Seth is the monkey behind the wheel and I’m the monkey behind the computer.” The rally commenced each morning at 8am, with teams given a single checkpoint card directing them on the day’s route. Sometimes a specific address was given, other times it was as vague as a scenic description. For one of the more cheeky, memorable checkpoints King found himself riding a jetski to the center of Lake Tahoe in order to physically check in and receive a tip towards the next stop.

“If your foot’s not knocked to the floor you’re not going to succeed,” explains Rose, who received eight traffic violations—including a $6,200 ticket in Oregon—during the 2012 rally. Although speed is obviously a key component, Rose credits their success to a combination of three things—”Navigation skills first, second being the vehicle and equipment that’s inside it, and driver capability. Navigation has to be the most important role though,” he says. “We just navigated better,” adds King.

Bullrun-2012-5.jpg Bullrun-2012-7.jpg

According to King, the two “don’t have a choice” when it comes to returning next year to defend their title. Rose tells CH they plan to upgrade their car to something slightly more comfortable, and might even bring along their “girls” for next year’s rally. For more on the scenic landscapes, evidence of hairy situations and general car porn see the slideshow.
