Kiwi amp; Pom: Marks amp; Spencer Kitchen

m-s-1.jpg

Designed by London-based firm Kiwi & Pom, Marks & Spencer Kitchen is a bespoke, stand alone cafè, located at the entrance to Marks & Spencer’s new flagship store in Westfield London.

The distinctive 3D form created from over 350 unique triangles of Corian serves as a meeting place and functional cafè, resulting in a sculptural design people can utilize both within and outside of it.

Kiwi & Pom’s cafè design will be featured in multiple other Marks & Spencer locations throughout the U.K. and Ireland, a level of success not unusual for the young studio.

Other notable accomplishments by the design duo include their work with for Hulger , creating the first-ever wooden Skype phone using sustainable materials that would withstand any software update. Their sleek Party Box for the upscale karaoke venue Lucky Voice, allows users to turn any computer into the ultimate karaoke machine with its microphone mixer that plugs into any PC.

Believing in strong, well-thought-out ideas and priding themselves in delivering concepts without compromise, Kiwi & Pom aim to create beautiful, functional and accessible designs that may be unexpected and unconventional, but always relevant and innovative.

Steven Guarnaccia Casts Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Frank Gehry in The Three Little Pigs

0708threelittle.jpg

Have children and can’t wait to introduce them into the wonderful world of architecture. Thanks to A Daily Dose of Architecture, we found our way to Steven Guarnaccia‘s recent retelling of The Three Little Pigs, which features Frank Gehry, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright, all in pig-form (of course), along with objects in each of the houses recognizable for having been designed by some of the biggies in the history of the industry. Guarnaccia, you might know, is the head of the illustration department at Parsons and was formerly the man in charge of the NY Times‘ Op-Ed page, and judging from his last modernist retelling almost a decade ago, you can expect good things.

It’s been a few years now since john st. and AmoebaCorp. joined forces to fight evil wherever it exists and the results can summed up in a single phrase:

“You’ve got your chocolate in my peanut butter.”

The exploration of the non-literal sense of space and family will be the thrust of the Salon We-Are-Familia exhibit at Open Space Gallery , in New York art town Beacon.

Headed by creative director Jennifer Garcia (of SEEE tee fame), We-Are-Familia comprises a collective of 50 artists spread across many disciplines focused on the concept of family.

Artists including Holly Stevenson, Yoh Nagao, Jesse Brown and Peter Kienzle for Superette will show their multimedia pieces, an eclectic mix of work that ranges from photographs to furniture. The highlight of the show is “Keepsake Box No. 5,” a motley mix of found furniture pieces and 37 artworks assembled together, including a video screen showing movies by director Olivier Babinet and video artist Rashaad Newsome, plus digital prints by Geneviève Gauckler and Rockers NYC.

F1X

It’s a pity that the F1 rift has been bridged.
I eagerly awaited a new powerful top of the world car competition that would emerge from the wrecked championship.
Now, we’ll have an edgier crisper version of the same old boring thing.

The most talked about theme today is cars.
Limit technology? Push it? Is this piece legal?

Pilots while important, have been relegated to the “we already know your amazing fucking talent, but the difference is the cars” corner. Will they become redundant?

We want a simple competition:
Daring pilots, fast cars, and the advancement car/machine tech.
Let’s involve universities!

The cars///

1 Unlimited engine/s:
Gas, electric, hydrogen, whatever.
Efficiency and economy will grow Darwinianly alongside a strong ecological element that everybody wants.

2 Teardrop/wedge shape:
Clean aero, no spoilers.

3 Mystery area:
The area under the car is open to any aerodynamic invention.
Do as you please, don’t risk the pilots life by design.

The secrets of the underside will infuse the season with a fresh razzle dazzle of teams hiding shapes by painterly deceit. Think of it as the sailboat race-like mystery encircling fin-keel profiles.

4 Four open wheels:
Set at regulation distance between themselves.
Slick tires, no rules on manufacturing.

5 Aerodynamic/energy generating wheels:
No protrusions outside the tire rim.

6 Electronics and mechanics:
Traction control, ABS, active suspensions and whatever they come up with next.

7 Last but not least: Safety.
Develop better airbags, decelerators, and protectors for crashes.

F1 should entertain us while pushing technology forward.

Unitasker Wednesday: Lightning Reaction Extreme

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

Do you dislike your friends? Do you want to screw with your loved ones’ pacemakers? Are you so bored that you can’t think of anything better to do than send an electrical charge through other people’s bodies?

If so, I know the perfect product for you to purchase:

The Lightning Reaction Extreme is a “fun” shocking game. Four people hold onto silver sticks that attach to a game board and each stick has a red button. A light in the center of the game board flashes and the first person to hit his red button is deemed the winner. The other three players (this is the Extreme version, after all) are shocked with an electrical charge from three AAA batteries. If shocking your friends isn’t a good time, I don’t know what is!!

There is also the Shocking Memory Game for those who run off all their friends and family members and wish to keep shocking themselves.

Rob Walker and Joshua Glenn Launch Significant Objects Project

0708sigobjects.jpg

Everyone’s favorite expert on the subject of Murketing, Rob Walker, along with cohort Joshua Glenn, have just launched what’s sure to be a fun and interesting side project entitled Significant Objects. It’s a mix between a dash of Objectified and a sprig of Chicago’s popular Dollar Store show, as the two curators gave miscellaneous objects found in thrift stores and yard sales to a wide range of writers who will come up with fictional stories about them. Following that, the items will be re-sold on eBay, complete with their new histories. It’s a heck of a great idea and Walker and Glenn have assembled a really terrific collection of writers to participate (full disclosure: this writer is married to one of them — and it isn’t Kurt Andersen — though man, wouldn’t that be great?). They’ve just launched with the first five stories, which are all mighty fine reads. Keep it bookmarked so you can check out the rest as they continue to roll them out.

El Perro del Mar

I am also a fan of El Perro del Mar and this elegant animated video for ‘God Knows (You Gotta Give to Get).’ Directed by Asa Arnehed, animation by Asa Arnehed, Olle Söderström and Malin Rosenqvist.

EPDM is one among several bands and musicians included in a tribute piece to Scandinavian Soundscapes featured in the second issue of the magazine.
