Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Museum Files for Chapter 11

0622reynoldsmuseum.jpg

If you were anxiously awaiting your trip to see all the sights and sounds of Hollywood, it looks like your trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee might not be worth it after all. Actress Debbie Reynolds‘ non-profit that was busy building the Hollywood Motion Picture and Television Museum to house her massive collection of pieces of movie memorabilia has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, having run into a snag when a lender sued the company over the more than a million dollars they say they are still owed. This has brought everything to a halt, with the building only half done (this continuously updated web cam of the structure’s progress is apt of be slightly awkward if the bankruptcy keeps things shuttered for long). But fear not, as you could always either a) go to California to see the actual place movies are made, b) travel to one of the few remaining Planet Hollywoods, or c) keep your plans to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, because after all, Dollywood is still there.

All-in-One Card Stamp

Ji Lee, creative director for Google Creative Lab, created an “All-in-One Card Stamp” to make card sending simple.

Why buy many cards for different occasions if you can have an “One Card for All Occasions Stamp”? It saves time, money and headache.

I wholeheartedly agree that it saves time, money and headache, but I don’t know how my specific group of loved ones would respond. I think they would laugh the first time they received a card from me, but on second and third mailings it would start to wear thin. Utilitarian? Yes. Solution for everyone? No.

Still, I like it’s practical nature and that Ji Lee was thinking of ways to reduce clutter. What are your thoughts? Uncluttered and cool, or over-the-top minimalist?

Lighting Artist Marcus Tremonto: New Works

Paper_Landscape.jpg

Since we last covered the work of Marcus Tremonto, the New York-based lighting magician has been busy with a host of new projects including collaborations with the Swarovski Crystal Palace and an exhibition at Spazio Rossana Orlandi during this year’s Milan Furniture Fair (images after the jump). Recently, Tremonto completed an installation for his first exhibition in Switzerland at the Franziska Kessler Gallery in Zurich.

Stitch_Lamp.jpg

Part of a two-person show entitled “Between Lines,” Tremonto fills a stark white room with his mind-bending creations. Of considerable note is the new series, Paper Landscapes (pictured at top), a flexible, razor thin luminous surface that the artist has been experimenting with for two years.

The Paper Landscapes series draws inspiration from an outdated technology used to generate topographic digital landscapes and was conceived so that users can connect multiples and alter the height of the sheet at select points, allowing for a near infinite set of undulating variations.

Other pieces on view include the illusive Stitch Lamp (right) and the Dali-esque Spill Lamp (below).

New Jersey Nets CEO and Ellerbe Becket Principle Respond to Atlantic Yards Critics

1222gehryshut.jpg

After all the cries of “You’re making Brooklyn bland!” after the Atlantic Yards project recently switched from Frank Gehry to Ellerbe Becket, the developers and designers for the new New Jersey Nets stadium have started moving on the PR front. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be doing themselves any justice. Thanks to a tip from our friend Kristen Richards over at ArchNewsNow, we found our way over to this extended piece where Brett Yormark, CEO of the Nets and Bill Crockett, Ellerbe’s principle on the project, were busy defending the decision and the new plans, explaining how great this all will be for Brooklyn in the end and Yorkmark saying things like “We’re going to brand Brooklyn in a big-time way.” Though outside of naming the two levels in the building “Brownstones” and “Lofts” (ugh), moving the entrances to street level, and building a practice facility next door, there’s not a lot of explanation as to why this is going to be so great for the area — it seems like just coasting on enthusiasm and hoping no one catches on. Ooh, maybe they could paint a couple of quick murals showing Brooklyn’s famous moments in history? Or have “authentic New York hot dogs”? That stuff always works in every single other city in the world. Here’s a little more Brett Yorkmark:

“The biggest change is that the building is now going to evoke Brooklyn like never before,” he said. “There’s such a legacy there. Wherever I travel, it is an international brand. They wear it on their hats and on their chests. We’re going…to brand Brooklyn in a big-time way, and it will start with the look and feel of the building.”

Of note: this writer remains completely impartial to this whole thing with Ellerbe Becket vs. Frank Gehry and whether or not Brooklyn will be bland or not. We just dislike empty PR.
