The Yvestown Yearbook 2010

I was visiting Yvestown this morning, the beautiful, personal and colorful blog of Yvonne Eijkenduijn , who moved to an old house in Belgium close to the Dutch border in I believe 2009 and ever since shares her interior decorating skills for her own home with us on a regular basis by showing great images, floorplans and more…

It was great fun for me to discover that she has turned her digital blog into a paper log a.k.a. a book, a yearbook. She says she is going to make these books mainly for herself but the book is for sale to anyone in her Blurb bookstore. You can preview the whole book here.

Called Single Family House St Joseph, the exposed concrete structure features irregular-shaped windows and sits on four supporting legs.

A shallow pit has been dug underneath the hovering building and can be utilised as a car port or storage space.

Despite the flat planes of the exterior shell, the interior space features a series of faceted walls, forming oddly-shaped rooms and windows.

The interior spaces are finished completely in white, with the exception of wooden flooring in some rooms and the treads of the staircase, which cantilever out of the wall.

Quote of Note | Tomas Maier

“The It Bag is a totally marketed bullshit crap. You make a bag, you put all the components in it that you think could work, you send it out to a couple of celebrities, you get the paparazzi to shoot just when they walk out of the house. You sell that to the cheap tabloids, and you say in a magazine that there’s a waiting list. And you run an ad campaign at the same time. I don’t believe that’s how you make something that’s lasting—that becomes iconic as a design.”

-Fashion designer Tomas Maier, creative director of Bottega Veneta

Warm noggins with colorfully cozy hats inspired by French winds

mistrou1.jpg mistrou2.jpg

Inspired by the infamous wind that sweeps through Provence, the mistral, Lou Mistraou‘s aviator-style caps bring luxuriously cozy charm to help get through the gray days of winter. The newly-launched label’s signature helmet-like chapeaus in both lambskin leather ($475) and rain-proof wool felt ($275) feature adjustable chinstraps and wool-padded silk interiors for added warmth.

Each hat is meticulously cut and sewn by hand at one of France’s last remaining milliners. A palette of bright hues combats seasonal doldrums for adults, while the children’s collection (coming soon) is in appropriately sweet pastels.

The caps are available at Kisan, DDC Lab and Jussara Lee in New York City, as well as online.

"Suits That Transport": Mobility meets fashion in BMW future

garmentthattransportsBMW.jpg

Students of automotive design and fashion at the European Institute of Design in Barcelona have joined forces to explore the futures of urban mobility, in collaboration with Iniciativa BMW. “Suits That Transport”—translated a little cagily from the Spanish “El traje que te transporta”— is the name given to an exhibition of the students final outcomes currently on public display on the Rambla Catalunya in central Barcelona.

The concepts on offer are imaginative to say the least. “Comme des Voitures” (above) supposes a mobile urbanite zipping through the city streets on boots soled with large ball-bearings whilst being bombarded with ambient and real time information on the intelligent visor. Similarly “City-Sking” offers up the idea of skis made for urban terrain—and a funky space-suit to match. Yet more blue-sky is the mysterious “Flying suit” (below)—what this inflatable-looking garment is intended to do we can only imagine. Oh and you heard it here first—black and white will be the new florescent hi-vis.

Smart-arse jibes aside—and credit where credit is due—we’ve got to give it to the participants for some highly creative concepts and some modelling of the highest order. Its great to see, as always, some imaginative energy being invested in alternative mobility solutions—even if they can verge on the Jetsonian on occasion.
