New! Dezeen Screen in association with Jawbone

Dezeen Screen is live!

Our new video website, Dezeen Screen, has just launched. As part of the launch we’re setting up a temporary video studio adjacent to Yves Behar’s JamScape installation in Milan and we’ll be filing video reports from the Ventura Lambrate district all week. Come and see us if you’re in Milan! www.dezeenscreen.com

Here’s our press release:

Dezeen Screen launches at Ventura Lambrate

Dezeen, the online architecture and design magazine, launches its dedicated video website at the Ventura Lambrate design district in Milan this year (12-17 April).

Called Dezeen Screen – www.dezeenscreen.com – the site aims to become the world’s leading resource for video content about architecture, design and interiors.

The site, which will follow Dezeen’s much-lauded and intuititve blog format, will feature short films made by Dezeen as well as movies submitted by architects and designers about their work.

Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs said: “Video is becoming an increasingly important tool for communicating architecture and design via the internet, and film-making has become an essential part of our journalistic output at Dezeen. So it makes sense to build a site specifically to showcase video content.”

At Milan this year the Dezeen film crew will be documenting events at Ventura Lambrate, profiling exhibitors and interviewing leading figures. If you’ve got a project in the area, we’d love to hear from you! Films will be posted on www.dezeenscreen.com during and after the week.

Dezeen Screen at Ventura Lambrate is in collaboration with JamScape, the revolutionary audio installation by Jawbone and Yves Behar of fuseproject at Pianissimo Grande (number 05 on the Ventura Lambrate guide and map).

Working from a dedicated studio within JamScape, the Dezeen team will edit and upload content during the week, while highlights will be broadcast on a TV screen at JamScape. Pop into the studio to see us at work or to tell us about your project!

Dezeen Screen is calling on designers to submit short movies about their own work for publication on the site.

Our studio at Ventura Lambrate will also showcase watches from Dezeen Watch Store (www.dezeenwatchstore.com).

Neues Museum in Berlin by David Chipperfield wins Mies van der Rohe Award 2011

Dezeenwire: the Neues Museum in Berlin by architect David Chipperfield has won the 2011 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award.

See all our stories about David Chipperfield. Here’s the press release from prize organisers the European Commission:

Berlin Neues Museum wins 2011 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award

BRUSSELS, 11 April – The Neues Museum in Berlin is the winner of the 2011 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation announced today. The building is a reconstruction, blending old and new, by UK architect Sir David Chipperfield. The ‘Emerging Architect Special Mention’ award goes to Ramon Bosch and Bet Capdeferro for the Collage House in Girona, Spain. The award ceremony will take place on 20 June at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.

Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said: “My congratulations to our winners who have created two exceptional buildings. The Neues Museum brings the past and present together in an stunning mix of contemporary architecture, restoration and art. The Collage House in Girona is another remarkable renovation which fuses old and new materials in a harmonious whole.”

The original Neues Museum, designed by Friedrich August Stüler, was built in the mid-19th century. The building was severely damaged in the Second World War and reconstruction began in 2003, with the aim of restoring the site to its former glory. David Chipperfield, who worked on the project in collaboration with fellow British architect Julian Harrap, adopted a dynamicapproach in his restoration. Rather than attempting to conceal the difference between the old and new elements, the past and present are beautifully combined to create an unforgettable building with multiple layers.

David Chipperfield, Principal of David Chipperfield Architects, said: “The reconstruction of the Neues Museum is a testament to the collaborative process undertaken in a demanding climate of public opinion. The result is evidence not only of the efforts of the professional team but of the commitment of the client and the city authorities to engage in this rigorous and articulated process.”

Mohsen Mostafavi, Chair of the jury, said: “The rebuilding of the Neues Museum is an extraordinary achievement. Rarely have an architect and client succeeded in undertaking a work of such historic importance and complexity; especially one that involves both preservation and new building. The project raises and addresses many aesthetic, ethical, and technical issues. It is an exemplary demonstration of what collaboration can achieve in the context of contemporary European architectural practice.”

Lluís Hortet, Director of the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, said: “The decision of the jury was an extraordinary challenge due to the high quality of all the finalist projects. The Neues Museum by David Chipperfield is a very important statement of how a contemporary architectural intervention contributes to the re-use of our heritage by improving its functional qualities and introducing outstandingly designed new architectorial elements for its museological purpose.”

Scientists find that a cluttered environment leads to discrimination, stereotyping, and antisocial behavior

Last Thursday, Discover Magazine published the article “Disordered environments promote stereotypes and discrimination.” The article examines a study by Dutch researchers who performed five experiments on stereotyping and discrimination. All five of the experiments strongly concluded that when an environment is in disarray, people yearn for order and hastily attempt to put information they’ve gathered from their surroundings into categories. This leads to harsher stereotypes against minority populations and higher incidence of crime. The experiments also found that people are more relaxed, open minded, and generous when their world is orderly.

When our surroundings are full of chaos — be it dirt or uncertainty — we react by seeking order, structure and predictability. Stereotypes, for all their problems, satisfy that need.

The study continues:

“The message for policy-makers is clear: One way to fight unwanted stereotyping and discrimination is to diagnose environmental disorder early and to intervene immediately by cleaning up and creating physical order. Signs of disorder such as broken windows, graffiti, and scattered litter will not only increase antisocial behaviour, they will also automatically lead to stereotyping and discrimination. Investing in repair and renovation, and preventing neighborhoods [from falling] into disarray, may be relatively inexpensive and effective ways reduce stereotyping and discrimination.”

The testing methods were very interesting, so I recommend checking out the full article for details.

LEGO Releases Farnsworth House Set

Following the popularity of 2009′s release of a blocky version of Frank Lloyd Wright‘s Fallingwater and the Guggenheim, and currently making the rounds, is the announcement that LEGO will now be selling a build-your-own Farnsworth House. The latest in their Architect Series, the kit will include all the 546 blocks you’ll need to recreate Mies van der Rohe‘s classic piece of modern architecture. The go-to man for all things van der Rohe, Edward Lifson, has a handful of great photos of the kit in action, from assembly to images from the instruction manual. Here’s a bit from the artist behind the set, Adam Reed Tucker:

Farnsworth House celebrates our 10th model in the LEGO Architecture series. As a minimalist “Steel & Glass” modernist symbol of the 1950s, it delicately balances clean lines, volume of space, minimal structure, and expansive glazing, creating an inviting relationship between the natural and built environments.

In order to effectively replicate the balance between the refined white structural elements and expansive clear glazing, I started with the smallest cross section I could make for the vertical exterior columns. After several attempts, the most promising turned out to be using basic 1×1 bricks. Everything else essentially fell into place: the inviting steps, the floating floor and roof decks, the understated furnishings and cleverly designed built-ins. It’s fitting that recreating a minimalist symbol of modern architecture was done so with the simplest of LEGO bricks, the humble 1×1.

No word on how the financial side of this project worked out, if LEGO would be giving a portion of the sales back to Farnsworth, was a lump sum licensing fee up front, or if any money changed hands. We bring it up because we hope there was at least some consideration following all the costly and time-intensive restoration work that’s gone on at the actual house over the past few years.

Here’s some text about the project from Jawbone:

Set within the emerging Ventura Lambrate design district in Milan, Italy, JamScape is a bold audio experiment that captures the idea of liberating and unleashing sound. Developed in partnership between Jawbone, Yves Béhar, and his creative agency fuseproject, JamScape uses Jawbone’s new JAMBOX wireless speaker and its punchy audio as building blocks to create a uniquely social experience in the form of a sound lounge.

The installation fosters creative partnerships with a cadre of audio artists and enables them to express their ideas of music, improvisation, jamming, and social sound. All soundscapes were crowd-sourced via an open call posted on media partner Dezeen, Twitter, and blogs worldwide to phenomenal response.
