Industrial Design Case Study: A Robotic Massage System

Robotics company Aescape targets the lifestyle and wellness market. To develop their eponymous automated massage system, they turned to industrial design and engineering consultancy Whipsaw. As the firm writes:

Massage is as old as humanity, but never before have robots been able to deliver the sensitivity and control for massage, until now. Introducing Aescape, a fully-automated on-demand massage experience. We were approached by the team at Aescape to help develop the design of this completely new product experience. We were challenged to figure out how to integrate new technologies, define a physical form factor, explore the essence of the Aescape brand through color, material, and finishes, and refine design details to bring this product innovation to life.

The final solution delivers a massage that is precise, firm, smooth, consistent, quiet, and never gets tired. It combines the very best technology with the very best user-centric design.

The Aescape platform offers various types of massage and is designed with adjustable features for each body zone to comfortably accommodate users of different sizes. Four infrared sensors positioned above the platform quickly scan the body to create a 3D map of its contours. On the touch interface below the user’s face, they can choose a preset program or customize the robotic arm movements according to their specific massage preferences. AI and machine learning technology continuously enhance the massage experience based on user preferences over time and are saved to your user profile for access to your preferences on any Aescape platform.

Approachable Robotics

The product can seem quite complex and daunting at first, however we were able to create something approachable and inviting. The softer forms of the robots are carried through the design of the bolster, headrest and armrest. Each massage contact point, called Aerpoints, are designed with seven precision-crafted surfaces. The forms are modeled after the human body to deliver targeted pressure that leaves you feeling your absolute best.

An Immersive Physical & Digital Experience

Users are presented with a digital control interface to initiate a session and see a real-time view of where the Aerpoints are and where they are going. Sound is also built into the headrest to create a meditative environment. Nestled in this same area is a safety shut off switch for added peace of mind.

Designed For All Body Types

The complete system was designed to be comfortable for both Olympic gymnasts and NBA players. All moving parts work in harmony to achieve the greatest comfort for such a wide range of possible users.

Enabling A Fully-Automated Massage Experience

Seamlessly integrated infrared sensors and lighting features give the Aescape system the ability to scan your body to deliver a personalized massage experience, and create a soothing environment. The placement and design of these functional and aesthetic components are minimal and approachable – while also balancing technical requirements.
