CH Japan: Kiun Incense

Fifth-generation incense maker Kazushi Iwasa’s indigo-inspired scent

In Takamatsu, artisan Kazushi Iwasa—a fifth-generation incense maker—steers Kiun, his family’s business that’s been in operation since 1872. Long-inspired by indigo, we commissioned Iwasa to craft a scent around the natural color and its traditional dyeing process for our 2019 Omakase box. Pulling from the brand’s reservoir of scents, Iwasa assembled 400 limited edition incense sets, bearing notes of wood and musk. When lit, its earthen notes refresh the air as the ash curls gently downward (but doesn’t turn to powder). During our CH Japan excursion, guests were able to visit Iwasa, tour the Kiun facility and even prepare their own custom scent.

To accompany the CH Omakase incense, we worked with acclaimed ceramicist Taro Tabuchi, who is also based in Takamatsu, on an understated stand meant to contrast the blue hue. Taro embraces the wabi-sabi effect of clay, produced by uneven heat—hand-stoked in a wood-fired kiln—to create uneven coloration. Tabuchi produces only a few hundred pieces each year, and no two are the same.

Desert Sessions: Easier Said Than Done

“Easier Said Than Done” from Desert Sessions (Josh Homme’s ongoing collective series) has Homme guiding listeners through the avant-garde song and video. Highlighted by solemn vocals, grand piano, an electric Wurlitzer, drum rolls and “little tiny baby claps,” the tune is from Arrivederci Despair—which was released late last year. Sometimes humorous (with  Homme peeing on a man dressed in a Nazi uniform) and sometimes disturbing (as a security guard is set on fire), the Chapman Baehler-directed video complements the elegant but erratic track.

Currently Crowdfunding: A Less-Icky Toilet Brush, a Vintage-Inspired Instant Camera, and More

Navigating the world of crowdfunding can be overwhelming, to put it lightly. Which projects are worth backing? Where’s the filter to weed out the hundreds of useless smart devices? To make the process less frustrating, we scour the various online crowdfunding platforms to put together a weekly roundup of our favorite campaigns for your viewing (and spending!) pleasure. Go ahead, free your disposable income:

The Jollylook Auto looks like a vintage bellows camera but prints on trendy Fujifilm Instax film. It comes with automatic exposure and flash but the manual focus controls and aperture settings will give you a little more control than you’d typically get with an instant camera.

Less clunky than its competitors, the Bilby headlamp is waterproof, USB-rechargeable, and uses a simple toggle clip to comfortably adjust the strap size. It achieves a maximum of 400 lumens but includes a variety of light settings—a wide beam, spot beam, reading light and more—that can each be further customized with four levels of brightness.

The Flushbrush debuted last year on the British TV show Dragons’ Den where it received a £50,000 investment. The main selling point is a removable, replaceable silicone head that is stored inside the toilet under the rim, so water passes over it with every flush. The handle stands on a minimal base that has a built-in magnet to keep it secure.

Turn your habit-building efforts into art with the Keep Track poster. It comes with 210 stickers of various colors that you can ascribe to different habits. Once you’ve completed your goal for the day, you can place a colored sticker over a gray space until you’ve filled in the entire field. At the end of the process, you’ll be left with a framed, geometric poster and constant reminder of how you can achieve anything, one step at a time.

Katbox is a modular kit for cat habitats. You can build a simple “den” (pictured above) or add on to create various configurations that can provide both a source of comfort and adventure for your pet.

High-Definition Video of the Sun’s Strange Surface

Captured using Hawaii’s Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (the world’s largest), this high-definition video of the sun’s surface is the closest observation earthlings have ever seen. Comprised of cell-like eruptions marked by bright centers and darker outlines, this particular swatch of the sun comprises 200 million square kilometers, and each individual “cell” is equal to the size of France. The first of many videos to be taken on the newly built set-up, this footage could crack the many mysteries surrounding our sun—namely why its surface is significantly hotter than its core. See the video and learn more at New Scientist.

Morphosis unveils contrasting towers for Viper Room nightclub site in Los Angeles

8850 Sunset Blvd by Morphosis

Architecture firm Morphosis has designed a 15-storey mixed-use development in Los Angeles comprising an angular white structure cradling a plant-covered glass tower.

The 8850 Sunset high-rise will host affordable housing units, condominiums, meeting rooms, a luxury hotel and retail spaces.

As part of the project, Morphosis will also redesign the Viper Room, an iconic music venue on the site founded by American actors Johnny Depp and Sal Jenco in 1993.

“8850 Sunset is both a response to the history of the site and a model for future urban developments that bridge commercial, social and residential life while engaging with the public,” said Morphosis founding partner Thom Mayne.

Renderings of the 239,000-square-feet (22,203-square-metre) project show two glass volumes: one covered in greenery and the other wrapped in white cladding. The white structure curves from the base of the glass tower and extends to rest on top, and is formed by various angles.

A two-storey podium containing retail spaces will connect the two structures at ground level. It will be topped with the sloped landscaped terrace that curves to join the main body of the white tower.

A 100-foot-tall (30.48-metre-tall) void between the two designs is intended to offer views of Los Angeles.

“In approaching this project, we wanted the design to reflect the spirit of what makes Sunset Boulevard the iconic destination that it is, while pushing towards a 21st-century Los Angeles that is greener, denser, more sustainable, and more pedestrian-oriented,” Mayne said.

The eastern building, with plant-filled balconies, will accommodate apartments while the western tower will contain the hotel.

A sky bridge extending from the top of the hotel will provide guests and residents with access to a swimming pool, events space, outdoor dining, and a restaurant and bar.

“This project is all about light, space, landscape; all elements that define the iconic spaces of southern California,” said Morphosis partner Arne Emerson.

“But it’s also about the creative energy of West Hollywood and the Sunset Strip in particular – capturing the sense of exuberant optimism for the present and the future that has defined Sunset Boulevard through its many historical iterations and identities.”

Morphosis will implement several passive and active design strategies into the construction to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating.

The firm intends to use an abundance of plantings, high-performance glass and an insulative facade on the building’s exterior to minimise energy use to achieve this. Spaces inside the building will also be designed to make use of natural ventilation and reduce direct solar gain.

“These landscaped areas reduce heat and energy loads, act as a buffer for rainwater management, and create natural habitats for local fauna, while providing health benefits to the building inhabitants by reducing air and noise pollution and providing a connection to nature in an urban environment,” the firm said.

Morphosis is working with local real estate developer Silver Creek Commercial Development to realise 8850 Sunset, with construction scheduled to begin in 2021.

The firm, which Mayne founded in 1972, has offices in Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, and Seoul. Its other projects proposed for California include the Korean American National Museum in Los Angeles and an art museum in Costa Mesa.

8850 Sunset follows other new constructions on the West Hollywood street, including five mixed-use buildings by Frank Gehry, which involved the demolition of a mid-century-modern bank by architect Kurt Meyer.

The City of Angels on Four Wheels

Who Knew? Motorcycle Hearses are a Thing

Until I saw the photo below, it never occurred to me that hardcore bikers want to ride until the very end:

Yes, motorcycle-based coffins (hearse-cycles?) are a thing. In fact, a longtime rider named Garland Crabb has been running a motorcycle hearse service out of Colorado since 2006. “After going to several friends’ funerals,” Crabb writes, “I came up with this idea to send a fallen loved one out the way they lived: With a motorcycle! And Black Diamond Motorcycle Hearse Service was created.”

And, check it out: These companies have provisions for cremation/urns as well.

One thing I can’t picture is these services going electric. I think the rumble would just have to be part of the whole thing–it would be eerie to see one of these glide by in complete silence.

Apple patents iMac housed in single sheet of curved glass

Apple patents iMac housed in single sheet of curved glass

Apple has filed a patent for a desktop computer that would integrate both its keyboard and screen into a single pane of bent glass.

The company submitted an official patent for the design, titled Electronic Device with Glass Housing Member, on 1 May 2019, but the application was only published by the US Patent & Trademark Office last week on 23 January 2020.

Apple unveils plans for iMac built from sheet of curved glass

The redesigned iMac would see the keyboard and display area incorporated into the same continuous surface made from a sheet of transmissive material. The patent gives glass, plastic or ceramic as examples, but implies it would most likely be made from glass.

This would be supported by a wedge-like structure behind the display that also functions as a container for the computer’s processing unit and electrical components.

The keyboard, touchpad and screen would all be built into the single pane of glass, however alternative designs show a device that  would allow the keyboard to be detached.

This sheet of glass could also be folded down its middle when not in use, to allow for easier storage or transportation.

The patent additionally shows designs for a MacBook desktop accessory that would allow users to dock a laptop into the device.

The laptop would slot into an opening at the bottom of the device and connect to the iMac to enable the user to use the laptop keyboard and trackpad while having the view of a larger display.

Whether the new design will be created or not is not known, as many patents are never realised. Nevertheless, the design is a good indication of what may be in store from the firm in the future.

One of Apple’s latest releases is the iPhone 11 Pro that features three different cameras for ultra-wide photos to offer “the best camera [it’s] ever made”.

The company also recently collaborated with GoogleAmazon and the Zigbee Alliance to develop a standardised system for smart homes that will allow users to connect new devices to any of their other hubs and voice assistants.
