Audi replaces headlights with drones and seats with hammocks in AI:Trail car

Audi has revealed its AI:Trail concept car – an all-wheel drive with drones for headlights and other features to enhance the passengers’ enjoyment of the outdoors.

The concept vehicle, displayed at last week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, showcases what Audi sees as the future of off-road driving.

The partly autonomous, fully electric car’s most unusual feature is the five drones it sports instead of conventional headlights.

Called Audi Light Pathfinders, the drones fly autonomously above and around the car to illuminate not just the path ahead but the area on either side.

They dock to the roof or roof rack, and double as cameras to beam video back to the driver if they want to see what’s ahead.

The bladeless drones can also assume other configurations –Audi suggests having them group together into a spotlight that escorts the driver safely from the vehicle.

Another of the AI:Trail’s headline features is the rear passenger seats, which Audi likens to hammocks.

Made from panels of fabric tensioned across a tubular steel frame, these suspended chairs are designed to be removable, so people can use them for outdoor seating.

“This way, Audi accompanies the driver on his entire trip, whether in the car or on the hiking trail,” explained design project manager Oliver Keyerleber.

He said features like this are meant to create “an emotional connection” to the car and to the brand.

“On a quiet path out in nature, the driver finds himself,” Keyerleber added. “He can concentrate on whatever is going on around him at precisely that moment. And that makes every trip in the AI:Trail a unique experience.”

To facilitate this connection, the vehicle body has large windows that extend down lower than usual, affording more sweeping views. Audi describes it as being “like a helicopter cabin”.

The interiors feature natural materials, including wood and wool, and some sustainable choices, such as recycled leather carpets.

The outdoor theming continues with grab handles made from climbing rope and knotted using macramé techniques.

Several outdoors-orientated accessories are removable in the same manner as the hammock chairs. There are water bottles, binoculars and a “Light Companion”, which provides ambient lighting when fixed inside the car but serves like a powerful lantern when removed.

One option is to integrate it with the AI:Trail’s navigation system and use it to project directional symbols or other information onto a hiking route.

Audi believes these kinds of ultra-specialised design features will make sense in the future, when car ownership decreases but sharing schemes strengthen.

“Unlike the cars of the present, such vehicles will no longer have to compromise between a wide range of uses and scenarios,” said Audi. “Instead, it will be possible to design tomorrow’s cars for much more specific use cases.”

The AI:Trail is the fourth in Audi’s series of electric concept cars, each fitting a distinct purpose. Previously, it designed the Aicon for luxury long-distance driving, the AI:Race sports car and, most recently, the AI:ME for autonomous urban travel.

In the future, the German automaker imagines that customers will be able to order any such specialist models from an Audi on-demand vehicle pool.

The AI:Trail has four electric motors and Audi quattro permanent all-wheel drive. It offers autonomous driving on paved roads and forest roads, but not on rough terrain.

The tyres, patterned with bold geometric elements, contain a structure of supporting struts that enhances suspension and improves passenger comfort.

Several automakers presented new designs at the Frankfurt Motor Show, one of the world’s major motoring events which took place from 12 – 22 September this year. Volkswagen revealed its first mass-market electric car, the ID.3, as well as a new “flat” logo to go with it.

Foster + Partners restores "iconic" glass Apple Fifth Avenue

Apple‘s glass Fifth Avenue store in New York City has reopened to the public following a renovation by Foster + Partners that added a spiral staircase, skylights and public plaza.

Apple Fifth Avenue is an underground Apple Store in Manhattan, nestled below a plaza that is in front of Edward Durell Stone’s 50-storey General Motors office building. The store overlooks the southeast corner of Central Park and was opened in 2006 by Apple founder Steve Jobs, with an “iconic glass cube” for its entrance.

Before being closed for several years for renovation, it was “one of the most photographed attractions in the city… [and] Steve Jobs’ defining symbol for Apple Fifth Avenue,” said British architecture firm Foster + Partners, who overhauled the store with Apple and its former chief design officer Jony Ive.

“It’s a 100 per cent design collaboration with Jony,” Foster + Partners’ head of studio Stefan Behling told Dezeen at the store’s opening on 19 September.

The team restored the glass cube entrance and much of the store’s floorplan below. The main intervention was to dig several feet into the base to create higher ceilings in the subterranean store.

“We decided to dig deeper and make the store higher,” Behling said.

Another key addition is 80 skylights that are arranged in a grid across the ceiling and flood the store with natural light. The lightwells are round and identical, and are integrated into a knitted, off-white fabric that creates a tent-like effect.

The ceiling is designed to change in order to match the colour temperature outside. Thousands of LED lights and sensors make the store glow, from a blueish-white in the morning to a more golden tone later in the day. The Fifth Avenue store location is the only Apple Store that is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.

Trees are also planted inside to make the store feel in tune with nature. Upholstered benches in a caramel fabric atop a white base surround each tree.

“The whole idea here is that you could make it feel happy, fresh and outside,” said Behling.

Another new feature of Apple Fifth Avenue is the redesigned spiral staircase, which Foster + Partners upgraded to suit the new, taller store. A mirrored stainless steel drum features 43 cantilevering steel steps. Bezier curves are created on each step to evoke the shape of Apple products.

At the upper portion of the staircase are mirrored walls and glass that create optical illusions. The staircase also conceals a circular elevator with a glass bottom and top.

Inside the store, walls are clad in a pale grey Italian Castagna stone with varying stripes and rounded corners. The same stone is used at Apple Park in Silicon Valley, which was also designed by Foster + Partners. Floors are off-white terrazzo.

Wood tables and matching storage units provide space for Apple products, including the newly launched iPhone 11 Pro with its three camera lenses. Another section of the store is designed for hosting talks and events.

Apple Fifth Avenue’s public plaza was also overhauled to be “easier to use and more accessible,” according to Behling. “What is one of the most generous things you can do for society? It is actually to do a civic gesture, that is free and like a really nice present,” he said.

“The new [store] design seeks to build on the original idea and create a public plaza that celebrates the vibrant nature of New York City,” Ive added.

The stone floor of the public space features 62 lightwells that blend in with the ground, while the remaining 18 skylights are formed as silver orbs. They are for both sitting on and as “public sculptures” that reflect the surrounding New York skyline.

The orbs are called “Skylenses” and have mirrored stainless steel shells with reflective glass tops, allowing light to pour down into the store without being able to see inside. There are nine volumes on either side of the glass entrance, in three rows of three.

Other aspects of the plaza include 28 honey locust trees that are planted symmetrically on the plaza’s north and south ends, at 59th Street and 58th Street. Low-lying water fountains and benches round out the space.

Apple Fifth Avenue joins another Apple store by Foster + Partners that is similarly designed around a public outdoor space, Apple at Aventura Mall in Miami.

The firm is also behind several other Apple stores, including Chicago’s Apple Michigan Avenue, a store in Macau with a glowing facade and a Tokyo Apple store featuring bamboo.

A Turner Prize Sparked Their Ceramics Workshop; Environmentalism Fuels Its Future

Paper, plastic bottles, and cans have fairly straightforward recycling processes. But materials designed to be durable, like clay, don’t have such a clear road to reinvention. A small ceramics studio in Liverpool’s Granby neighborhood is setting fire to that notion.

The Turner award-winning team at Granby Workshop has developed what they believe to be the first 100 percent recycled line of ceramic plateware, made with discarded refractory bricks, laboratory test tubes, tiles, wastewater, and precise chemical analyses to check the recipe. They’re raising money for the production of Granbyware on Kickstarter now.

The Granbyware line is made from sludge, silt, chipped tile, and other materials that would typically go to waste.

Neighborhood activism turns heads

Granby, a small neighborhood in central Liverpool, has been the site of infamous decline and remarkable bounce-back. After a housing-market crash turned the area into a wasteland, frustrated residents created a community land trust and demanded new development approaches: “We [have] stopped waiting for top-down regeneration and started doing it for ourselves and by ourselves,” their proposal explained. They caught the attention of a social investor who loaned the group half a million pounds; additional support soon followed.

This was how they came to hire the architecture firm Assemble to remodel 10 houses and create a winter garden as a revitalization effort. The inspiring story and exceptional work earned the firm the Turner Prize in 2015, won spots in the V&A museum and the Crafts Council’s permanent collections, and sparked the creation of a permanent studio to churn out ceramics for new local projects and a burgeoning global fan base.

Setting the table for Granby

Despite the international attention, Granby, as a neighborhood, and Granby Workshop, as a business, are frequently misunderstood, says Sumuyya Khader, one of the workshop’s original local freelancers, who now runs operations full-time.

She notices outsiders tend to see the story with a tinge of a savior complex. “The media has one view on how the city is”—stuck in decline, struggling—”but to us, Granby is thriving.” Assemble didn’t just swoop in to fix it up; they wouldn’t be there at all if not for the local organizers who hired them. “Granby has always been community-based. It’s always been a mixture of people, and people doing things for themselves.”

Accordingly, as the team has scaled production and become a truly functional international business, the team has made an effort to connect with their community, offering plate-making workshops and locals-only discounts on their luxury ceramics.

The Granby locals on the workshop’s staff (and, Khader is quick to point out, Assemble’s Lewis Jones, who moved there for the job) understand their neighbors’ perspectives—and budgets. They offer seconds—firings with some minor imperfections—at the nearby market, selling bowls for half the price or big boxes of tiles for less than they’d ever offer online. “It’s just recognizing that what we’re doing is super unique and the price point doesn’t really match the area, or Liverpool in general, to be honest. We always want to ask, ‘When are we doing things for people in this area? How are we going to manage it? What does it mean?'”

Reusing the salt of the Earth

Granby’s self-awareness extends beyond local budgeting considerations. As the climate crisis escalates, Khader and the team are thinking about the workshop’s role in preserving the environment and setting new standards in their craft.

“We’ve always been incredibly conscious of how sustainable we are, and we work in an industry which has slowly been on the decline, especially in the UK,” Khader says. “We know for a fact that we can’t compete with the Ikeas, which means that no matter what we make, it has to be sustainable, it has to stand the test of time.”

Their newest line, Granbyware, thinks even bigger, turning to exclusively recycled materials, from broken tiles to commercial ceramic runoff sludge. Carefully monitoring the chemical balance of the end result, they’re able to make the mixture into durable, beautiful plateware that’s more affordable than previous offerings.

“We’re excited because, looking around, we’ve not yet found anyone who has a 100 percent waste material tableware range,” Khader says. “For us, the challenge is always pushing the limits of what a process is and experimenting with materials and putting a bit of a twist on [it] to say, ‘You can look at things in a different way.’

“Coming from waste streams doesn’t have to mean it’s ugly or nonfunctional,” she adds. “You might not know the difference from first glance, but a lot of work has gone into the testing of the recipe itself.”

A lot of work is going into sharing the story of this rare recipe, too. “It’s important that people know that it’s made from waste material and it’s more ecological and sustainable,” Khader says. “Eventually, everything is going to have to move that way. We’re going to have to use less raw materials. It’s happening. So why not be on the cusp of that happening and prove that it can happen from a small-scale manufacturer in Liverpool?”

Pentagram creates "21st-century identity" for Yahoo

Pentagram has redesigned Yahoo’s logo and branding to give the search engine a “bold and confident” identity for the 21st century.

The logo has been designed to be more simple and flexible than the previous design, but also look back to the fun of the brand’s “Looney Toons-style” logo from 1996.

“Yahoo is one of the digital world’s iconic brands and its original logo perfectly captured the spirit of the early days of the internet,” said Pentagram’s Michael Bierut.

“We were determined to reflect the brand’s idiosyncratic roots, which is why we retained and strengthened the Yahoo exclamation mark,” he told Dezeen.

The capital letters of the logo’s previous iterations have been abandoned in favour of lower case letters.

The brand’s exclamation mark is italicised to give emphasis and is alined at 22.5 degrees to match the angle of the Y.

“The exclamation mark’s exaggerated italic treatment helps bracket the wordmark with two strong diagonals, and calls back to the Looney Toons-style charm of the original 90s mark,” explained Bierut.

The new identity has been created to mark Yahoo’s new brand strategy of focusing on helping users find a more customised experience online. The design is meant to represent this new chapter for the company.

“Today, Yahoo is not only a place for fun, but a place where people go for world news, investment advice, and reliable weather reports,” said Bierut.

“We were so lucky to work with the team at Yahoo to find a balance between what’s always made the brand distinctive – the exclamation mark, the colour purple, the yodel – while creating a 21st-century identity system that responds to the needs of its hundreds of millions of users.”

The logo is written in the Centra No. 2 Extrabold font, with the letters modified to be more geometric and compact. Purple, which has been the Yahoo colour since 2009, is used throughout the rebrand.

A bright shade called “grape jelly” is used as the the primary colour, with secondary shades of “hulk pants” and “malbec”.

Pentagram designed the logo so that it can work across both physical and digital platforms and at all scales – from the side of a building to a mobile app.

The logo has been designed so that it can be streamlined to create a y! monogram, which will be used across Yahoo’s sub-brands.

“We worked closely with the creative and product teams at Yahoo to make sure that it will work well across media and across platforms,” explained Bierut.

“The shortened y plus punctuation treatment formalises a way of communicating the brand more telegraphically. All elements are designed to support sub-brands like Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports in a way that’s clearer than ever before”

The y! monogram could also be on clothing such as caps and socks, although Bierut does not think that Yahoo will be abandoning web services to become a clothing manufacturer in the near future.

“At the end of the day, it’s hard for a company called Yahoo to not be fun on some level,” he said. “And I believe they are currently assessing potential demand before they fully commit to the sock business!”

Pentagram is one of the world’s largest design consultancies, it has previously carried out major overhauls of Slack, America’s Library of Congress in Washington DC and the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Yahoo is one of numerous companies that have simplified their branding in recent years. Earlier this year London studio Red&White created a minimal logo for BT, while Mastercard dropped its name from its logo to be clearer.

The airbag forms a protective cushioning around the neck, fixating it and providing extremely gentle shock absorption. The pressure remains constant for several seconds, enabling the airbag to withstand multiple impacts to the head, during the same accident. Once its job is done, the airbag quite simply deflates.

And this time around it’s been power-packed with a couple of updated features. It’s been armed with a Bluetooth connection, amping up your daily dose of safety with a bit of tech. The built-in Bluetooth syncs with your smartphone (It is both IOS and Android friendly). It notifies your next-of-kin in the event of an accident, in case you find yourself in a bit of a muddle! The Bluetooth feature will also help to update you when your battery falls dangerously low. And probably best of all, it capitalizes on your smartphone GPS, in an attempt to create a map that will record where the majority of bike accidents take place! Who said wireless technology was harmful to our health?

So far, they’ve protected over 4000 cyclists in accidents over the years, a number they are immensely proud of. With connections in over 15 countries, they’ve sold 185,000 of their airbags! Released this month itself The Hövding 3; the safest cycle helmet is now even smarter, and we cannot wait to get our hands on it (or heads)!
