Álvaro Siza awarded Golden Lion for Venice Architecture Biennale

Dezeen Wire:

Here’s the full press release:

Álvaro Siza Vieira has been chosen to be the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – Common Ground (Venice, Giardini and Arsenale, August 29th – November 25th, 2012).

The decision is made by the Board of la Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, under Director David Chipperfield’s proposal, with the following motivation:

“I am equal in size to whatever I see, not hemmed in by the size I am” (Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet)

“It is difficult to think of a contemporary architect who has maintained such a consistent presence within the profession as Álvaro Siza. That this presence is maintained by an architect that lives and works at the extreme Atlantic margin of Europe only serves to emphasise his authority and his status.”

“Since the early appreciation of the Boa Nova restaurant and the swimming pools at Leca de Palmeira and a reputation confirmed by the early houses, Siza has maintained a unique position in the architectural galaxy. This position is full of paradox. Siza has upheld a consistent production of works at the highest level, yet without the slightest hint of the overt professionalism and promotion that has become part of the contemporary architect’s machinery. Apparently running in the opposite direction to the rest of the profession he always seems to be out in front, seemingly untainted and undaunted by the practical and intellectual challenges he sets himself.”

“Secured by his isolated location, he exudes worldly wisdom. Experimenting with forms of extreme geometry he manages to produce buildings of great rigor. Developing an architectural language that is uniquely his, he seems to speak to all of us. While his work exudes the security of judgment, it is clearly intensified through cautious reflection. While we are dazzled by the lightness of his buildings, we feel the seriousness of their substance.

Those of us fortunate enough to have heard him speak about architecture, using words as sparingly and as precise as the fine lines of his drawings, know that these works are not the product of a conventional talent but of a mind sophisticatedly exercised by the confidence of knowledge and the wisdom of doubt.”

The Golden Lion will be officially awarded to Álvaro Siza Vieira on Wednesday August 29th, 2012 – 11am at the Giardini of la Biennale, during the opening and award ceremony of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition.

Capturing The Bigger Picture

In an era where cameras are as sleek as the Nikon and Canon, coming up with arustic design as the M-icro Camera is quite a dare. However, this dare pay-off and gives us a delightful macro camera that captures macro photography effectively. Incorporating the elements of art deco, the ergonomic form and simplistic functions, make it a complete package of desire. It is interesting to note that the zoom feature has been simplified and enlarged, so that it’s an easy-to-use cam.

Shade Under The Lampbrella

The concept of the Lampbrella is as romantic as getting wet in the rains with your partner. The design incorporates a rain and motion sensor into the shaft of the streetlamp and opens up the umbrella canopy when it rains. It’s a clever integration of a street lamp and umbrella, but my only worry is that it may end up injuring someone while opening or closing. So till that open-close system is not refined, lets just call this a romantic solution!

Talent-spotters: Colchester Institute

Taking into account the Queen’s Jubilee, the theme for this year’s Colchester Institute show was Make Do & Mend. We sent our talent-spotter, Jason Stone, to scope out some of the best work from the exhibition, which was held in a disused bus station waiting room in Colchester town centre.

Immediately as I entered the exhibition space, my eyes were drawn to the work of Chester Fletton, with his 3D Union Jack Baskerville B setting off the room and capturing the theme of the show. Combined with his outstanding book about the effects of Oil, Chester’s work appeared again and again throughout the show, with his attention to detail second to none.

Jade O’Bryan’s illustrations of British models were expertly drawn, and the larger model drawings set themselves apart from the rest of the exhibited work.

Adam Benton’s fabric-paged screenprinted book on the history of Nintendo was a pleasure to behold, with excellent typographic layout and attention to detail. Adam’s work had a clear style and was complemented beautifully by a set of screenprints of Nintendo consoles.

Becky Bigmore’s The History of Ford book was an excellent example of outstanding visual layout, using type and images to present the information in an easily digestible way.

Another student to watch for, Hannah Yapp’s bold screenprinted poster for local film The Vicious Dead stood out amongst the Live project briefs, where students work with real clients to get a taste of the industry. Hannah’s set of screenprinted childrens books about Roads are another excellent example of her work, complemented with colourful screenprinted postcards.

The exhibition hall featured posters by Year 1 students for Amnesty International, here are a few which stood out:

Here’s more information from the designer:

Introducing a new stacking chair by Victor Vetterlein called X-Federation. A combination of materials and layout provide the necessary structural support for the thin profile design. X-Federation is composed of laminated wood combined with carbon fiber fabric – a material strengthening technique used in boat building and further developed in the skateboard industry.

In regards to layout, the front legs are perpendicular to the rear legs to increase lateral stability. The design includes a thin steel frame under the seat where the legs are mechanically fastened. An optional arm rest is available that fastens to the back and sides of the chair. The X-Federation Elite Class chair comes with a solid brass armrest and leg sleeves.
