Dolangeiman

Known for his impeccable work of craft using scrap metal and pieces of woods. It has always been a thrill for mixed media artist Dolan Geiman to come up with something extraordinary using ordinary things that many will just think of disposing instead of reusing it.

Dolan’s favorite three concepts, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle has always been the key to finding his inspiration within the surrounding.

This summer the Market Stroll from the 'His and Hers' collection has been added to the online shop. Which fatures a male and female couple complementary in materials and colors with vintage watches and white star pattern….beautiful! Each set is one-of-a-kind, created from a unique set of found materials by Dolan himself………………. read more >>>

527 – The St. Michael Line: a Straight Story?

The St. Michael Alignment is arguably the most prominent and intriguing of the many ley lines that criss-cross Britain. It runs in a straight line between Land’s End, England’s southwestern extremity, and Hopton-on-Sea, on the Norfolk coast. Its name derives from the many sites devoted to St …

SVA Alums Redesign the Book Club

If you associate book clubs with white wine and Jane Austen-inspired chick lit contemporary women’s fiction, think again. Four alumni of D-Crit, the MFA Design Criticism program at the School of Visual Arts, have formed an editorial consultancy called Superscript, and among their first initiatives is a new public book club focusing on architecture and design topics. ADBC (Architecture and Design Book Club) launches Thursday evening in New York with featured guest Alexandra Lange. The journalist, critic, and architectural historian will lead a discussion of The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces, William Whyte’s seminal 1980 study of NYC plazas. The first meetup takes place on the High Line (how superscriptish!) and is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the 23rd Street lawn.

The aim of ADBC is “to unpack and explore important design and architecture texts—not always necessarily books—with an expert guest,” Superscript partner Avinash Rajagopal tells us. “And we’re open-minded about what we consider as design and architecture texts.” The founders are similarly flexible on club membership. “We really liked the idea of a ‘public club’ and decided we should hold meetings in public spaces around the city that somehow related to the selected texts,” explains Superscript’s Molly Heintz. “We want to keep it accessible enough that anyone passing by can join the discussion and take something away from it.” The partners are now assembling the fall schedule of ADBC meetups, including a possible event at Lincoln Center during Fashion Week. Stay tuned to the Superscript website and Twitter feed for details.

What appears to be an open tunnel beneath a bridge in northern Spain is in fact a concealed passageway, screened behind a secret mirror.

Mirror lab by VAV Architects

Local studio VAV Architects temporarily installed the mirror inside the doorway to a passageway that burrows through the base of the river-spanning bridge.

Mirror lab by VAV Architects

A slither of daylight passes around the edges of the mirror into the tunnel, creating an illuminated outline around the reflected view.

The true view is revealed when the mirror is revolved around a central pivot.

Other recent projects on Dezeen to feature mirrors are a shop with a central photography studio and a garden filled with a maze of grey brick archessee all our stories featuring mirrors here.

Heres a short project description from VAV Architects:

Mirror lab

The idea of exploring the mirror for the installation has grown from the desire to capture, explore and experiment with the landscape, rather than the built form.

Mirror lab by VAV Architects

The project itself is not important on it’s own, as much as is its relationship with the site.

Mirror lab by VAV Architects

The mirror lab is merely a tool to explore and capture the views of the existing and by doing so it becomes invisible, completely dissolving into the landscape. A simple insertion into the bridge, solely supported by the two points, mirror lab adds a new dimension to the site, both inside the arc, by doubling and inverting the space, and outside, by capturing and framing the views.

Pivoting through the centre, the door allows the visitors to interact with and become part of the installation, immersing themselves into and exploring both the real and the reflected landscapes.

Ingrid Dabringer Puts the "Art" in Cartography

IngridDabringer-thephilippines.jpg

Canadian artist Ingrid Dabringer has recently come to our attention for her map paintings, in which she reinterprets the vagaries of plate tectonics as portraits and dancers with a vaguely fauvist flavor.

She recently shared her creative process with the Huffington Post (their Travel section, no less): “I’m constantly pulling focus with my eyes. Sometimes I focus on the color, other times topography, other times black lines or colored lines or the landmass. I also let my eyes go blurry and focus sort of behind or in front of the map. Once I sift out a contour I don’t lose it. In the end, I see all of the separate elements all together.”

Big Red

Solitary Arts’ Geoff McFetridge-designed skateboard now available for a limited time as a deck

big-red-deck-1.jpg big-red-deck-2.jpg

Solitary Arts‘ first and most popular skateboard to date, Big Red, is now available for a very limited time as a standalone deck. The board, inspired by a thrift store find in San Francisco years ago, mimics the plastic banana board cruisers of the ’70s, but with a contemporary feel. Made with seven-ply maple and updated with a slight concave and an upturned nose, the board hits eight inches at its widest for the perfect cruiser style while still being totally skateable.

Rad screen printed graphics by Solitary Arts’ co-founder Geoff McFetridge, combined with the footprint-shaped custom grip, guarantee it will look just as sweet on your wall as it will under your feet. Previously only available as a complete setup through Solitary Arts directly, you can now pick up the deck itself for only $50 through Huckberry, the recently-launched flash sale site that features guest buyers for each collection of goods. This round, picked by CH contributor Mike Giles, is available only through this Thursday, 18 August 2011.

The Jack Pine Triumph Scrambler

Hammarhead and Triple Aught Design build a Triumph-inspired motorcycle for city streets

TAD-x-HH-1.jpg

High-performance apparel and equipment manufacturer Triple Aught Design earlier this month offered up floorspace at their San Francisco headquarters for motorcycle builders Hammarhead Industries to set up temporary shop. The intense three-day bike build—a process involving a few dozen tools and many more sleepless hours—resulted in a beautiful bike that typically would’ve taken three months, the Jack Pine Triumph Scrambler.

TAD-x-HH-6.jpg

“Both inspired by classic design but without being nostalgic,” as TAD founder Patrick Ma describes the bond between the two design-driven companies, they teamed up based on a shared “clean, stripped-down aesthetic of the modern design approach, upgraded with the performance advantages of current technology.” While their compatible values made the project a no-brainer, the build proved to be a different story.

James Hammarhead himself took to the shop armed with an ample supply of cold Pabst to fuel his creative fire. After working tirelessly through all hours of the three days, this California spec Jack Pine motorcycle was born.

TAD-x-HH-2.jpg

With a reworked seat unit and custom pegs to accomodate a passenger, a new “dark matter” black paint job and weighing 45 pounds less than a stock Scrambler, the street-legal bike was designed with the SF streets in mind. A modified exhaust system and shortened rear frame loop adapt the bike to the rigors of city riding (previous builds were geared for Hammarhead’s backwoods Pennsylvania stomping grounds), while remaining true to the iconic bikes of the 1950s.

TAD-x-HH-3.jpg

In the final nod to their deep roots in craftsmanship and hands-on approach to manufacturing, James rode the Jack Pine out of the shop moments after completion, showing both companies’ dedication to making products built for daily use.

Head to Hammarhead Industries for more information on their limited series of production builds and to Triple Aught Design to check out their gear and garments—including their to-be-released locally made Horween leather Streetfighter jacket sported by James (pictured) throughout the build.
