A Revolution in Mind-Blowing Video Made Possible by the Design of the GoPro

0goprohD.jpg

Following the invention of photography, it must’ve been staggering to see printed images of places you’d never been to. Similarly, when motion pictures were invented, people paid to watch footage of steam locomotives—a few seconds of silent action, no narrative story—just for the thrill.

Now, years later we’re seeing another image-capturing revolution, this one based on the physical design of the actual camera. I’m talking about the wearable camera as pioneered by GoPro. Simply by engineering the camera to be small and rugged, then designing a bunch of little plastic gewgaws to connect it to a helmet, a tether, your wrist, your chest or even a surfboard, they enable us to capture and share physical experiences in an unprecedented way. For conveying a raw feeling of holy shit, nothing beats the POV or near-POV footage enabled by a GoPro.

Wanna see what I mean? Queue up this video and fast-forward past the filler to 1:30:

a rollercoaster week….with a spectacular result!

Vorstin_mix2

{all images above are taken by Marjon Hoogervorst aka Vorstin}

I hope you missed me ? I certainly missed you 🙂 but wow have I had a spectecular week last week. Marjon Hoogervorst (Dutch photographer) arrived on Monday exactly one week ago and picking her up from the airport was exciting, because we had actually never met before… sort of a blind-date I guess… and I was chasing the wrong blond in the arrival hall at first…, but found her eventually…:)

It was great having Marjon over and get to know each other but no time to relax…we planned to shoot 7 houses in 6 days…crazy, yes absolutely crazy, but we DID it! And we even had time to visit some remarkable places here in Kuala Lumpur and shot some images too…just some impressions above.

Quite a steep learning curve for me… doing the interior styling for all of these houses… never did this before… having blogged about interior design for almost 5 years this was a welcome and exciting change (and challenge…). Luckily for me Marjon is very experienced and I am so impressed by this photographer's attitude towards work… complete commitment! No complaints at all by her, although it was 30 degrees C, only positive energy, true focus on everything she did and she has an amazing eye for that what needs to be captured.

Yesterday evening I brought Marjon back to the airport, it was  a bit emotional, because I made a true friend last week, one that I am going to miss having around, she tought me soooo much and I now have even more respect for the hard work by photographers… and stylists…:)

You probably wonder where are the images!!! Well we have made close to 1000 images, we have to filter them first, see where they fit best … we are thinking of a small book or publication in a magazine. Once we know more I will share some images here on Bloesem.

Tomorrow Bloesem is going to be back to it's normal self, I will start with an amazing Let's Get Personal Tour… see you tomorrow xx irene xx

ps. if you are an editor from a magazine and interested in one of the homes we photographed here in Malaysia, please do shoot us an email!

StartUp cock-up

UPDATE: Thanks to the weight and nature of comments on here and on Twitter, Oli Barrett of StartUp Britain got in touch yesterday. 99 Designs has now been removed from the Top Tips list on the site and replaced with a link to the Design Business Association at our suggestion. There is still a link to it elsewhere on the site however. Barrett expressed his regret over the prominence given to 99 Designs and said that StartUp Britain will ‘endeavour to find great British talent wherever we can’.

StartUp Britain is a government-endorsed initiative “to make it easier for new companies and innovations to flourish and encourage people who aspire to start new businesses to work for themselves”. As long, it seems, as that business is not graphic design

StartUp Britain is backed by a number of entrepreneurs. The homepage features David Cameron wearing his most ‘visionary’ expression. It is, the site promises, “helping Britain’s future entrepreneurial talent by providing links to the web’s best business resources, along with offers from some of the biggest brands in the country”.

Below that initial promise is a list of four Top Tips to start you on your way. Number four is Create a Logo. And where does it link through to? Perhaps to a list of well-chosen UK design studios in various locations who could all benefit from the work? Nope, it goes to 99designs.com, the US crowdsourcing site where designers compete to knock out logos for ‘from just $295’.

Thanks Dave. So, rather than backing the design sector that your government so frequently claims to support, your big initiative to encourage hundreds of new businesses funnels commissions to an American website that systematically undermines the values of the very industry you claim to find so important.

Thanks to Jeff Knowles and various other people via Twitter for the tip-off.

The information that follows is from Hubert:

Benjamin Hubert x Fabbian

Paddle

Paddle is a collection of adjustable LED task lights designed by Benjamin Hubert for Italian lighting manufacturer Fabbian launching in Euroluce during Milan Salone Del mobile 2011.

Paddle by Benjamin Hubert

Paddle has many axis of functional movement inspired by the 360 degree movement of a canoe blade through water. To allow for maximum usability in a variety of working environments.

Paddle by Benjamin Hubert

The high brightness led light source and capacitive touch control is contrasted with a tactile range of material to soften the technology and create a more human range of products.

Paddle by Benjamin Hubert

The framework of the lamp is available in either ash timber or texture lacquered aluminum with the paddle head formed from pressed aluminum.

Paddle by Benjamin Hubert

The product focuses on the flowing relationship between adjustable elements whilst retaining a utilitarian architectural quality.
