Designer Sarah Burton Named New Creative Director of Alexander McQueen

Picking up the pieces and finding someone to steer the ship following the death of its founder Alexander McQueen earlier this year, the Gucci Group-owned McQueen label has selected the former designer’s second in command, Sarah Burton, to become its new Creative Director (PDF). Burton had worked with McQueen for a close to decade and a half, and has served as the label’s Head of Design since 2000. “The creation of modern beautifully crafted clothes was at the heart of Lee’s vision,” Burton said. “I intend to stay true to his legacy.” Here’s a bit:
Commenting on this announcement, Jonathan Akeroyd, President and CEO of Alexander McQueen, said: “We are delighted that Sarah has agreed to take on the role of Creative Director. Having worked alongside Lee McQueen for more than 14 years, she has a deep understanding of his vision, which will allow the company to stay true to its core values. Sarah is extremely talented and under her creative leadership we are ready to enter a new phase in the brands history.”
Robert Polet, President and CEO of Gucci Group, added: “As a business we remain absolutely committed to the Alexander McQueen company which has proven to have strong customer loyalty and has shown to be a resilient brand in the aftermath of the tragic loss of its founder. Kudos to RISD president John Maeda for arranging this kit. He believes that “a new kind of design-led leadership is needed to innovate out of this global economic crisis. Artists and designers can bring their intuitive, creative thinking to a broad array of fields, and become the drivers of economic possibility in our slowed economy.” /p

Posted in: UncategorizedThe onset of summer means vacation plans—or at least daydreams about them—abound. Whether you’re looking for seclusion or are simply ready for a change in beach venues, these islands offer lesser-known ways to get your seaside fix.
The Outer Hebrides
Known for its ruggedly mythic terrain, the Outer Hebrides are an archipelago off the coast of Scotland. If you’re in the mood for a relaxed summer sojourn, consider renting a beach-front cottage. The Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis offer a peek into ancient architecture, while the small islands of Barra and Vatersay present picturesque white sand beaches, playful schools of dolphins and other marine life.
Conception Island
Located in the Bahamas, Conception Island is a tropical gem hidden among the other more popular destinations. As its name suggests, the locale is a return to nature—the 2,100 acre island is a wildlife refuge replete with sandy beaches and clear water. A favorite for diving and bird watching, the closest civilized life is Rum Cay, which has a small airport and basic amenities.
Kalymnos Island
Just off the coast of Turkey, the Greek island of Kalymnos is a newly popular Aegean Sea hotspot that has a range of outdoor possibilities. With mountainous terrain bordering the pristine sea, Kalymnos offers scenic hikes and swimming options. Rock climbing is also popular—the Grande Grotta cliffs are well known for their sheer size and impressive scale. Do your part to help Greece through their recent economic woes by enjoying the quintessentially beautiful Greek terrain of this small island.
