Banksy Defaced Again in Bristol

0626banksypaint.jpg

You can’t please everyone. If you’re Banksy, that’s likely the motto you live by. Following the opening of his largest exhibition to date in his home turf of Bristol, which you’ll remember was set up in secret due to the hosting museum’s concerns that the city council would axe the idea, it’s being reported that a someone has thrown paint all over another of his earlier pieces in that same city (one attached to real walls, not those in a gallery). Just a few months back, a group defaced one of his paintings as a protest against gentrification, and the latest paint attack happened earlier this week, with thick blue paint covering Banksy’s work — thus far no one has claimed responsibility. Fortunately, for Banksy fans, the owner of the building on which artist original chose as his canvas has taken to getting all this new paint removed in an attempt to erase all of the bad vandalism from their good vandalism.

Bob on Film

D.A. Pennebaker’s Dylan documentary, Don’t Look Back (1967) is a timeless piece of music memorabilia and one fine looking film. Enjoy the trailer which includes footage of Bob’s original back alley video for Homesick Subterranean Blues.

Martin Scorsese is another filmmaker inspired by Dylan. Check out live concert footage of Dylan in two of Scorsese’s music documentaries, The Last Waltz (1978) and No Direction Home (2005).

Hot In The Hive: iPhone App Coasters

imageThose of the slightly younger set may not know this, but before the iPod and Mac laptops, Apple was on the brink of being obsolete. They were associated with the huge, loud computers in the school library that you could only do research on or else the librarian would throw her glasses at you. The iPod is maybe the greatest comeback product in history. It not only brought Apple back from the brink, but ricocheted them to number one in technological gadgets. Now you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t have at least one Apple product laying around the house. I’ve had an a few of the iPod variation, but I’m actually lusting over the iPhone. Well, those at Apple must have felt bad for people like me who would love to jump on the iPhone band-wagon but, for whatever reason, have not. There are now iPhone app coasters that I can also put on my table, and for the fraction of the price! These coasters come in a set of 16 “apps” and are made of MDF plywood wrapped in a vinyl and varnish. A rubber back keeps it from moving around and they’re washable and reusable! Ok, so they don’t actually allow you to pull up the weather in Tunisia or give you a recipe for “Easy Chicken Bake” with just a click of a button, but they are awesome and fun! At $60 for the entire set, these make a great gift for the i-Aficionado or for those like me who just want to rub elbows with this elite i-Group!

Price: $60.00 for set of 16

Nightime Basics According to WhatsWear!

imageOn summer nights, almost anything goes. Shorts, slinky dresses, sequin t-shirts… anything. Whether you’re hanging with the beachy Hamptons crowd or sucking up the humidity in New York City, all women should have the following go-to pieces to be prepared for wherever the summer night will lead them. The Day-to-Night Skirt: Every social butterfly needs a quick-change item. The kind of functional skirt that can dressed down for daytime activities and instantly dressed up with a pair of heels. Perfect for those who need to literally run out their door. Dressy Shorts: While most guys are forbidden to wear shorts at night, no bouncer will say anything if a girl dons a pair. Black shorts are the perfect summer staple to pair with any of your favorite summer tops. Sequined Tee: Anything with a hint of sparkle or sequin is sure to be a perfect nighttime staple. No jewelry needed. Sexy LBD: Ok, every season needs a sexy LBD, and this is our justification to buy another one just for summer. These are just a few great and versatile summer night staples! Isaac Mizrahi Selects Winner for Studio 360s Gay Pride Redesign

0626gaypride.jpg

Following up on a post from earlier this month, the PRI/WNYC program Studio 360 has launched the results of its “Reimagining the Rainbow” project in their latest episode which airs this weekend (but you can hear it right now using the player below). You’ll recall that the show was asking listeners (and the firm Worldstudio) to redesign the gay pride branding, trying to find something new beyond the familiar rainbow flag. The submitted entries to Flickr were a mixed bag, as these things tend to be (this was our favorite), but some were pretty interesting. But by far the most fun of all of it is listening to Isaac Mizrahi, stepping in as guest judge to pick his favorite entry. Paper recently put together this interview with Mr. 360 himself, Kurt Andersen, who had this great quote about how they landed Mizrahi:

I was originally talking to him and I happened to mention that we were doing this idea and he said “Oh I’d pay to be the judge of that.” And I told him, “you don’t have to!”
He said that among his friends they argue about which of his friends is the king of the gays and this is chance to prove it.

Workspace of the Week: Ikea hacked

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Pinkernaute’s pristine office:

This space is stunning and I can barely believe that it’s all Ikea. It must be a delight to work in this well-organized office. Pinkernaute’s notes with the images give further details:

I used BESTA shelves and VIKA BYSKE legs, to create my ideal desk. The desktop is made from 2 hollow doors that I assembled, veneered, stained and varnished. The doors are IKEA TOMBO doors with a peacock wallpaper from Ferm Living.

The Trollsta sideboard [on the other side of the room] was one of the main inspiration for this room. I wanted black elements in my office, since computers and screens are so often black.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.
