Marc Newsons Lockheed Lounge Chair Set to Auction to Test Design as Art Market

0430newsonchair.jpg

Do you have a million dollars on you right now? Have you been standing for a long time and your legs are getting a tired? If you answered yes to both, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Marc Newson‘s Lockheed Lounge chair will be heading to auction soon in London, largely used to test the waters and see if the design-as-art market is still alive and kicking or if most buyers are keeping their purse strings tightly sealed. Other copies of Newson’s chair, which was used in Madonna‘s music video, Rain, giving it some extra cache (though with whom we’re not entirely sure), were sold back in 2006 and 2007, setting records for the work of a living designer. So, with those pre-bust numbers in hand, it’s been decided that it should go up to bat once more, apparently the perfect chance to see who is still out there looking for chairs that cost a million dollars:

“It’s the seminal piece of contemporary design,” Kenny Schachter, a London-based dealer in contemporary art and design, said in an interview. “Everything in the market is measured against this. It’s traded as regularly as an IBM share.”

Dynamic Designs Challenge: Student designers vs. earthquakes

0earthquake.jpg

Your correspondent was lucky enough to live in Japan for a year, and while there were many great things about it, the one thing I could’ve done without were the frequent, if miniature, earthquakes. It seemed like every other month a little tremor would shudder through Tokyo, and it was terrifying to be in a basement-level-three store (not uncommon in such a space-tight city) during a temblor, wondering if you were going to be buried alive.

There were products you could buy to mitigate the effects of earthquakes, for example, many homes I saw had curtain-rod-like braces wedged between the top of bookshelves and the bottom of the ceiling. But now the Dynamic Designs Challenge is looking for design to take a larger role in dealing with the problem: They’re putting out a call for student-designed earthquake-proof buildings.

Of course, design is just one of many moving parts (sorry, poor choice of words) required for this competition:

The competition will require participants to demonstrate many of the core attributes and skills required by employers and universities including teamwork, creative thinking, communication and the ability to solve complex challenges. The students will also apply skills in and knowledge of science and engineering, art and architecture, project management, finance and socio-economics.

GE DVD 500GB, OMG

0dvd.jpg

With broadband and wireless technology becoming faster and more devices always connected to “the cloud,” you could be forgiven for predicting the demise of consumer-based media storage devices; for example, once upon a time GPS mapping devices required inserting CD-ROMs loaded with data, but now something as slim as an iPhone can give you maps of virtually anywhere via the internet and Google Maps.

Yet “traditional” media is still being developed and improved. Case in point: Earlier this week, GE announced they have discovered how to fit 500 gigabytes onto a single DVD platter. The way that they do it is by making the discs several inches thick. Sorry, just kidding–for the real way they do it, check out this video:

Now the question is, what are the implications for consumer devices?

The company said it will initially focus on the commercial archival industry followed by the consumer market for its micro-holographic storage technology.

Would love to hear your thoughts on what types of devices we could use that would hold 500GB (or ultimately, 1TB) of non-web-based information.

Medical devices: Design Bugs Out

0designbugsout.jpg

…Superbugs, that is. The UK’s Design Council recently commissioned series of medical equipment concepts, using the design itself to reduce the spread of germs–for example, by reducing a commode from 30-something parts to 11, making it much easier to disassemble and sanitize.

Other products designed under the initiative include:

– A redesigned porter’s chair which is durable, comfortable, and cleverly uses design to make it easy to clean while reducing the number of obvious user ‘touchpoints’ where infection can be spread.

– An ‘intelligent’ mattress which changes colour when it becomes compromised by body fluids.

– A patient bedside system comprising bedside storage and over-bed table which eliminates hard-to-clean corners, is made of special durable, scratch-resistant materials, and is easier for patients to use unaided.

Academy Of Art University Runway: Dahae Kim Cuts The Edge Of Menswear

imageIf James Bond had a young, hip son that adored the likes of Nice Collective and John Varvatos, but wanted to wear a perfect marriage of the two, he’d have to go to Dahae Kim. From the moment her boldly-hued red suit came out on to the runway, the crowd knew they were in for a treat. Popping with structure and more-than-meets-the-eye detail, Kim’s collection has an urban operative vibe that is in tune with contemporary fashion. It’s sleek. It’s sexy. It’s now. Best of all, it’s a nitrous boost of innovation that can easily carve its way into the world of modern menswear. Each look that came down the runway was thoughtful and injected with a mix of rockstar, hipster and dandyism. From afar, the coats and blazers that stomped their way down the runway (in some adamant-looking combat boots I might add) looked simple-chic, but up close, the detailing is immaculate. Seam lines and collar manipulation keep sartorial senses tingling while strategically placed zippers and atypical menswear silhouettes marched down the runway with a modest, yet unapologetic intensity. With her inspiration of disarmament and demilitarization, Kim is right ahead of the curve when it comes to men’s fashion. Don’t forget to check out the slideshow to see more of her work!
